Review from "Dunbar on Black Books".......2004-01-15
The following review appeared in November 2000 online in "Dunbar on Black Books" (http://www.queenhyte.com/dobb/dobb_archives/dobb_00/nov_00.htm ):
One More River to Cross by Margaret Blair Young and Darius Aidan Gray (Bookcraft, ISBN 1-57345-629-2) is the first of a trilogy entitled Standing on the Promises. It is a historical novel about black Mormon pioneers. With it "Dunbar on Black Books" (DOBB) makes an exception to its custom of reviewing only nonfiction books. We do this for two reasons. First, this book, albeit a novel, observes canons of history more dutifully than some works that hold themselves out as pure works of history. In the author's notes, the reader is told: "We have been true to all the facts that we could find but have freely fictionalized the spaces between the facts." Second, this book deals convincingly with an important subject about which very little has been written: black Mormon adherents whose membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City dates back as far as 1832.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints makes much of the point that this book is not an official publication of the church. Bookcraft, its publisher, states that the book does not represent its position. One must know that Deseret Books publishes doctrinal works by Latter-day Saint leaders, biographies, and "enlightening" church historical books and that Bookcraft is a registered trademark of Deseret Book Company. It is in this context that DOBB reviews One More River to Cross.
When we overhear Delilah Abel whispering to her sleeping son Eli[jah] on the plantation just before they flee, we may think that they are fictional characters. We later learn from citations of the records of baptisms in the Nauvoo Temple Church of the Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City that they were living people and that Eli[jah] Abel was baptized there. So that while we may have reservations about the dialogue between the persons in the book, or even the accounts of events that took place on the journey to Salt Lake City from Maryland or from Alabama, or from wherever, we know that Elijah Abel made it to Salt Lake. More than that, we are provided with evidence that he was one of the very few blacks to receive the priesthood in the early church and that he was ordained by the Prophet himself.
This book is one of the first, if not the very first, that this reviewer read by starting with the end notes. Quite frankly, to me the notes are a most significant part of this book. The authors make excellent use of records in the Missionary Record Books of the church, of information from conversations of Joseph Smith, as reported in Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, from U.S. Census records in Salt Lake City, and from Brigham Young's Journal, to mention a few of their sources. They have given us a book providing information about African Americans in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that is not widely available.
A word about the authors is in order. Heber G. Wolsey, former managing director, public communications, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says of Darius Gray, the black co-author, "I know of no one who can express a more objective, more compassionate, more honest portrayal of blacks in the Mormon Church than Darius Gray." Gray is a former journalist and presides over the Genesis Group, an official arm of the Mormon Church. The Genesis Group was organized in 1971 to support church members of African descent. Coauthor Margaret Blair Young is a lifelong white member of the church, "with pioneer heritage," Mr. Wolsey points out. "She has felt deeply over the past few years the inspiration of her pioneer forebears, many of whom knew the Saints of color portrayed in this novel," he says.
This is an important book. It ought to be read by everyone as it throws light on some little-known facts about the history of the membership of African Americans in the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this era in which Protestants are looking to their roots after decades of ecumenism, Darius Gray, as a black Mormon should not be on the defensive because of widely held, erroneous perceptions of the history of black membership in his church.
If this book were a nonfiction work, I would make the observation that an index would have been useful. The bibliography is excellent. William G. Hartley, associate professor of history, Smith Institute, Brigham Young University, says it all when he says, "In a way that pure history cannot do, this story attaches us to black Saints who deserve to be known about and appreciated by our generation."
With two more volumes to come, the contributions of African Americans to the Mormon Church should be well documented for the general public. It has been said that the best way to keep information from black men is to put it in a book and classify it as nonfiction. Perhaps Margaret Blair Young and Darius Aidan Gray have found a formula to set this situation right.
Not Just Promises--But a Real Delivery!!.......2001-03-13
Anthony and Joan both could not put this book down! Anthony read it first, then read parts of it to Joan, then Joan read it. In the spirit of The Work and the Glory series by Lund, Standing on the Promises, combines factual history and characters with an outstanding story. The characters really come alive and the reader can truly imagine themselves right in the story and experiencing the events portrayed. The actual events and research are documented after each chapter and provide a wonderful historical review of the evidence. After, becoming acquainted with Elijah, Jane and Isaac in other publications, being able to read their stories was truly inspiritational. We are eagerly awaiting the next book in this series!

Do you like groovy girls?.......2007-05-20
I have long been a fan of the clean artwork of John Romita Sr, especially his expert delineation of the female form (Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson being standouts during his legendary Spider-man run), so I was interested enough to flip through this recent Marvel reissue of old romance comics from the 60s and 70s. Boy, am I glad I did! This 176 page volume contains wonderful artwork by Romita in the form of his clean, bold inking to the excellent penciling of the great John Buscema and the underrated Don Heck. Any fan of lovely Romita girls will enjoy Marvel Romance as it contains 4 stories with Romita inking some of the most beautiful woman ever to grace the pages of comics. Another highlight is the Steranko art on "My Heart Broke in Hollywood". This story appears in the Steranko collection, Marvel Visionaries: Steranko, as well. It is a true masterwork of psychedelic design. The hairdos and sexy outfits of the stories from the late 60s and early 70s are great and the more adventurous design and layout styles that had become predominant in comic's Bronze Age adds extra flair to these stories. I can't say I'm as big of a fan of the first half of the book, as these tales come from earlier Marvel romance comics (1960-1964). Although the artwork for these stories is mostly provided by two comics legends that I love, Jack Kirby and Dick Giordano, I prefer their more accomplished later work in the mid-to-late 60s and early 70s. Having said this, the whole book has a fun, campy feel to it that will appeal to anyone who enjoys overwrought melodrama (i.e. Douglas Sirk films). I am now hopelessly hooked on Bronze Age romance comics, I have been tracking down some of the original comics that these stories are reprinted from and I can confirm that the line art and the recoloring found in "Marvel Romance" is excellent. The coloring is bright and vibrant, and very suitable to the fun, campy tone of the stories. And the printing and paper quality is, as expected, much better than what is found in the original comics. I highly recommend this book to any fan of pretty girl art, campy stories, 60s outfits (mini-skirts, headbands and boots!), and Silver and Bronze Age artwork. Groovy!
What a trip.......2006-08-21
Robert J. Petersen's review captured the gist of this book perfectly - no others really need to be written. I will say that this book is certainly not a joke, as romance comics made up a significant amount of sales in the period immediately following the arrival of the comics code authority, so Marvel deserves a pat on the back for bringing an overview of the genre into print. Where Marvel really stumbled is in not providing an introduction to the book, but instead launching straight into the stories. An introduction would have helped put these comics into their proper historical perspective and maybe warranted a 5-star review. Anyway, MARVEL ROMANCE provides the reader with a decent selection of tales that span the years 1960 - 1972. Most are written by smilin' Stan Lee, with great art by Dick Giordano, Jack Kirby, Sol Brodsky, John Buscema, Jim Starlin, Jim Steranko, and Gene Colan. Two very important things can be learned from these stories:
1. Stan Lee's overwrought dialogue for his heroines Sue Storm (Invisible Girl), Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), and Janet van Dyne (the Wasp) was developed in stories such as these - see any Marvel Essential!
2. The artists of Marvel's Silver Age had solid artistic skills and were professionals in the truest sense of the word. All of these guys could easily switch gears and fit right in drawing stories featuring not a single cape or flexed bicep. Picture a modern artist like Ed McGuiness or Rob Liefeld trying to do something like this... pretty ridiculous, eh?
So again, thumbs up to Marvel. If nothing else, give this book a shot to strengthen your comics education. Maybe it's corny, maybe the fellas will laugh at you - but you'll know better!
I can't believe how much I liked this.......2006-06-18
I've read thousands of Marvel super-hero comics over the years and wasn't sure if I had much interest in their other genres, especially those that pre-date the introduction of The X-Men, Daredevil, etc. But I picked up Marvel Romance on a lark and cannot believe how much I loved this book.
The stories themselves are incredibly campy and fun. In a weird way, they remind me of reading modern day Grant Morrison stuff. All the characters are slightly 'off', their speech is incredibly formal and the situations totally absurd. Story #1 alone (there are 24 in total) involves the lily-white Diane who states "In the summer Manhattan is a bore...it's too hot, there are few cocktail parties, and the most eligible men are gone!". At a summer resort she meets the also lily-white Jim Scott who authors under the name Norman Taylor. Following a trend soon to be obvious, the story ends with them kissing as she declares to us in voice-over, "His lips sealed our true and lasting love with a kiss!"
Rich, educated and white seems to sum up all the characters in the book. With names like David Hunter, Leslie Mitchell, Scott Bentley and Pete Carter the objects of affection for these women seem to step right out of the young, handsome, rich East Coast mens club. I don't know who read these things originally back in the early 60's but I have a hard time picturing my teenage Mom on a farm in Indiana identifying with these books at all. But maybe that was the point?
All I know is I couldn't stop grinning while I read stories like 'Please Don't Let Me Be a Spinster' which opens with the line "I used to date too, laughing and loving like other girls! But now I walk alone, my yearning embracing only groceries."
This entire book seems like a Roy Lichtenstein exhibition. Ever changing outfits and hair-dos make for a fascinating study of the era. Some of Marvels biggest names in art contribute to this book: Gene Colan, Jack Kirby and John Buscema handle the bulk of the stories. But the absolute highlight is a seven page piece by Jim Steranko. Bringing his pop-art sensibility from Nick Fury over to a romance story set in Hollywood casting this 1970 story written by Stan Lee is simply fantastic.
If you're only into comics for the Biff, Bam, Pow spandex factor this book isn't for you. But if you are interested in a little slice of comic history that's well off the super-hero path (stories like this are the logical precursor to 'real-life' books like Box Office Poison, Jinx and Ghost World a lot more than Batman or The Avengers could ever be) do yourself a big favor and pick this up.
The overall art restoration and book quality are solid. The book comes in at 170 pages of stories and art with the length of each story ranging anywhere from 4 pages to 18, with a norm of about 7. The actual cover art isn't the 'Love Story' reproduction shown by Amazon - it's actually a panel close up of a crying woman from the story entitled "Jilted!" making the Lichtenstein comparison even more obvious. The 'Love Story' cover must have been Marvel's pre-release art for the collection as it's the only cover to actually make it into the book.
For $19.99 I would have expected some or all of the following, none of which are present: an introduction, book covers and a page count closer to 200.
Marvel can get away with this kind of price point for a 175 page collection of 70's Iron Man or Captain America owing to the base of current day readers. But I've got to think that this kind of subject matter is a tough-sell to the fan-boy crowd and without any sort of extras over their other trade collections I can't help but feel that it will be sorely overlooked. Don't miss out.

Book Description
In this masterpiece of research, a splendid supplement to Ezra J. Warner's Generals in Gray, Bruce S. Allardice brings to light a neglected class of officers: the Confederacy's "other" generalsmen who attained their rank outside the usual avenue of appointment by President Jefferson Davis and who had been virtually forgotten as a consequence. Explaining that the process of becoming a general was fraught with politics, lobbying, intrigue, accident, mismanagement, and chance, Allardice identifies six main categories of legitimate claimants to the rank of Confederate Generaltwo more than historians have traditionally recognized. He presents a substantial biographical sketch of 137 generals not found in Warner's original and a short bibliography of each. For the vast majority, his is the first treatment ever published.
AUTHOR BIO: Bruce S. Allardice is the author of Jeff Davis's Colonels and the coauthor of Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables. He has published articles in Civil War History, Civil War Times Illustrated, and North & South, and he teaches history at South Suburban College near Chicago.
Customer Reviews:
There's more to the story..................2007-07-05
Ezra Warner's classic 1959 volume tells us the stories of the 425 Confederate General Officers about whom we can't argue as to whether they were, in fact, a General; this volume tells the stories of several about whom we CAN argue. Warner gives the criteria, and this book does, too; a man had to be nominated to General Officer rank by President Davis, AND confirmed by Congress.
The reasons to be here, not in Warner's book, are several; most commonly, a man could be a General of state militia, nominated by the Governor, confirmed by the legislature, not a General of the Confederacy. [President Jefferson Davis makes this book that way]. These militia officers can be seen as the equivalent of modern National Guard Officers. In some cases, there was a disconnect between the President and Congress, in others, there is doubt as to who appointed the man, and when. Thus we have the first Hispanic General, Santos Benavides--some records have him as a Colonel, others as a late appointment to Brigadier General. [The first American Indian General is in Warner's book--no doubts about Stand Watie].
A special case is that of nine officers appointed to Brigadier General by General Edmund Kirby Smith using his expanded powers as Commander of The Transmississippi Department. Communication between Richmond and the West was most difficult after the fall of Vicksburg in July, 1863; Smith was, thus, in a situation unique in American history. These nine men are but a small part of a most complicated story; Warner lists them in an appendix; here they get full honors.
In these reviews, I try to differentiate between books for the general reader, and those for "people like me". This book falls, I think, somewhere in between. It is superbly done, well written, well illustrated; a most respectful account of men deserving full respect, even if they aren't a "big name". For those poor folks who are like me, this book is, indeed, essential. You know who you are....
More Generals in Gray -- Completes A Picture.......2005-07-27
I have owned and used Mr. Warner's classics Generals in Blue and Generals in Gray for over 40 years. Mr Allardice shows us the men appointed General by the various Southern States. This book proves the point the Government of the Confederacy was still having growing pains; the point being the generals from the Trans-Mississippi not being confirmed by the CSA Senate, in Richmond, Va. This is a great book for the Civil War Buff. It is a must need in your War Between the States Library.
Fascinating Particulars About Nondescript Generals.......2000-05-03
A tome devoted to biographical sketches of 137 men united only by their arguable status as Confederate generals sounds like one of the ultimate Civil War "buff books". It is a pleasant surprise to open its pages and discover no dreary catalogue of minutiae. Instead, the author has condensed years of research into a series of sparkling capsule lives that reflect the wide range of characters and events in America's bitterest conflict.
Each of the subjects has some claim to having held the rank of general in the Confederate military but not enough of one to have earned listing in Ezra J. Warner's authoritative "Generals in Gray". However solid or dubious their entitlement to the highest rank, however, they form a cross-section of important and interesting Southern officers and citizens. They came from a variety of backgrounds. Ten were born in the North, nine in Border States, nine abroad (including one veteran of Napoleon's Grande Armee, whose unit's performance in the defense of New Orleans fell short of Napoleonic standards). Not all had embraced independence eagerly. Michael Jefferson Bulger, for instance, voted "no" in the Alabama secession convention but nonetheless enlisted in the 47th Alabama Regiment. At Cedar Mountain, he suffered wounds to his arm and leg, binding the latter with corncobs and suspenders. At Gettysburg, he was captured after being left for dead. Following such mishaps, he ended up living to age 94, enjoying a placid post-war career as a farmer and occasional politician.
In contrast to the indestructible Bulger, Edward Gantt was a fire-eating secessionist who resigned his seat in the first Confederate Congress to raise a regiment in Arkansas. After being captured with the garrison of Island No. 10, he returned home on parole but then experienced an astonishing change of heart. In late 1863, the formerly rabid states-righter slipped across the Yankee lines and spent the rest of the war urging his former countrymen to lay down their arms.
Many more such tales are told here. The author has a keen eye for incisive facts and quotations, and his writing wastes few words. For the serious student of the Civil War, this work is a valuable reference. For everyone else, it offers hours of fascinating browsing.

WONDERFUL! Meaningful, inspirational, & deeply touching.......1998-08-29
This is a collection of warm, wonderful, inspirational stories. I loved it, and very highly recommend it. *HOWEVER*, be forewarned that it contains a large number of the stories from the Chicken Soup books. Although that won't usually be a problem (and I do think that the selection here is outstanding), it probably wouldn't be a good choice for someone who has all of the books in the Chicken Soup series. For most of us, though, it is a beautiful collection.
