Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.
How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.
Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

A must listen to by all to improve yourself and others.......2007-10-16
This audio is for everyone, who wants to try to understand people, especially your spouse and children. I have listened to this five times, and I am still learning, as this tape gives examples with other people in the audio that makes it quite interesting. One situation was when both people were in love, got married then turned around to only be a one sided love. Gary Chapman coached the one person and helped two, and understanding that each of us has things, we love more than the other does. We have been married for forty-six years and I found out how to make it even better, with listening to this tape. The best!
I'm grateful!.......2007-10-15
Even though I am not of Christian faith, I have found that discovering these Five Languages has immediately benefited me. I understand my husband, children, and friends with greater awareness and a deeper appreciation for who they are, while also understanding myself much better. I feel more confident to 'speak' from my personal 'Love Language' and can receive others' Love Language with more receptivity.
Originally, my hairdresser told me of this book. She was so enthusiastic about it that she was able to describe these five languages in an understandable way for me to begin talking about this concept to family and friends. As I discussed this more and more, I realized the need to pick up the book and read it.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining greater awareness of self and others.
Everybody should read.......2007-10-10
This is a great book. It helped me look at the way I treated my husband and my children. I can now more fully express my love to my family in ways that they understand. I bought a copy for my mom and sisters.
Good Suggestions.......2007-10-09
I got this book in hopes of finding ways my hubby and I can connect. He read this book really fast and I'm still reading a couple of chapters at a time. Although the suggestions are good and we are using them to mend some issues in our relationship; it wasn't something that I just couldn't put down like hubby. For overall content I give kudos.
Helpful for all couples.......2007-09-27
This book was recommended to me by a colleague. It is actually used in premarriage counseling as well as couples therapy. I wish I'd read this earlier! A definite must have for understanding the two sides of relationships. I usually purchase a copy as a gift for close friends at bridal showers, etc. It is an easy read, and very helpful for old and new couples alike.

An amazing Thomas book.......2007-01-18
The condition of this book was as expected. This particular book is an amazing volume of Thomas stories. It has allowed us to meet some engines who we have never met before as well as get the back story on others who we only know a little. I enjoy it at least as much as my sons do.
the best.......2006-05-04
This was my sons' favorite story book at age 3 or 4. The language is advanced, with much more challenging vocabulary than a modern book would use for preschoolers, but it wasn't a problem, so it must be a good thing!
Stories that have aged well.......2005-11-15
Having been exposed to the contemporary "commercial" version of Thomas the Tank Engine in various forms I had low expectations for _The_Complete_Collection_. After reading all the stories over the past two months at bedtime I whole heartedly give this collection 5 stars. These are the original stories by Rev. W. Awdry--not just Thomas stories, but other trains that have been forgotten by the marketplace. The language is the Queen's English and the terminology harks back to a different place and time. Fortunately the stories are robust enough to hold up without translation for my 3-year old.
While there are rude engines, naughty engines, and ample portions of just deserts as noted by another reviewer; I find the stories to be well balanced and if the young listener isn't careful some life lessons may be learned--really useful engines are happy engines. One aspect of these stories that broadens their appeal is "Each story is based on some odd incident which has happened to some engine, somewhere, some time." (quoting the author in the foreword) Many times I found myself laughing, or shaking my head and nodding in agreement with the outcome of the story. There were several stories whose full meaning was lost on my 3-year old, but never-the-less hit a tender spot with daddy. The most requested stories are those that involve Thomas and his familiar cast of friends. In October 2005 Random house published a selection of these Thomas stories that might suit an audience not interested in small steam engines or narrow gage railroads (the additional stories in the collection). For those that have an interest in trains beyond simple children's stories this book will be a pleasure to share with your young railroad enthusiast.
The edition I am basing my review on is a 1999 Random House Printing. Unfortunately this title is out of print at the time of this review, but you may still be able to find new or like-new copies through resellers. Should this book be republished, and in my estimation it is well deserving of another print run, I would encourage the publisher to include an index at the end with references to the particular engine and what happened to him. A frequent request is "Let's read the story about James getting pushed down the hill by the trucks", or some other engine and circumstance--it would be useful to have an index.
The Perfect Thomas Book.......2005-10-13
I got this book a long time ago and I must say, this book is a must have for anyone even remotely interested at all in Thomas.
This book includes many of the stories on television, as well as never before seen stories and characters. And the incredible sense of realism in this book is inevitable. If you can read this book and see something incredibly unrealistic, besides the fact that the trains can talk, then you obviously have the wrong book.
Want to know how Skarloey and Rheneas celebrated their 100th birthday? Want to see Henry rescue two broken down diesels? Want to see special trains climbing mountains? If so, grab this book and enjoy. You will recognise many of the stories, ans also find some other tales as well. Many characters you will recognize, some others maybe not. Either way, this book is a 100% must read.
And to the soccer moms that didn't like the book, you obviously have no sense in realism and reality. I know that the book versions are a tad bit darker than the televised tales, but they're much, much better. Just because Duck said "Shut up!" once, or Henry got stuck in a tunnel and refused to come out (didn't you even read the story AFTER that one? where he comes out?) and there's no silly chindish morals doesn't mean that kids shouldn't read this book. If you want your kid to enjoy the real lives of these famous locomotives, please stop squalling and read the book.
Signed,
~Reagan Wolf
P.S. Somebody should publish Christopher's Awdry's books soon. Dang.

Must have night time book........2007-10-11
My wife reads one story a night to my son before bed. It calms him and gives him something to look forward to so that getting him in bed is not such a chore... if only it was that easy getting him to actually go to sleep!
Great Read!.......2007-08-17
I enjoy reading the stories to my Son! Reading them has become a ritual before going to bed.
Already a favorite.......2007-07-17
My son is only 23 months, and he LOVES Thomas! I had gotten him a very nice board book with rhymes about all of the engines, and he has learned all of their names...he also has several of the wooden trains, and knows them all...I got this book for him thinking that I could read it to him in a year or so, and he could learn to read the stories himself...he always asks to get this book down and he will carry it (it's very large and heavy for a little guy!) around the house and sit down and leaf through the pages and study the pictures...
The book is beautiful...it has a papter cover, but when removed, the book itself is red linen and embossed with silver, and it is very well made...the pictures and pages have a nostalgic feel, and I can't wait until he will sit still long enough to let me read the stories to him!!! He is familiar with most of them from the TV series, but there are a few that are new to me... I think this book will be around for decades...and I hope that he can pass it along to his children someday...Excellent book...I can't say enough!
Great book.......2007-06-23
Fun reading. My son really lights up when you occassionally get one of the vintage stories that they actually turned into the storyline for one of the shows on PBS. Definately a source of quality bedtime stories at our house.
very good.......2007-05-07
My son is in first grade. This book he used for write reading response in the most of time. He can write all different reading response base on the story in the book.
Book Description
From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank is the first and only book that details all aspects of running diesel engines on vegetable oil. Includes information on biodiesel, the diesel fuel substitute made from new or used vegetable as well as information on running any diesel engine on straight vegetable oil (SVO). This book is packed with history, information, instructions, photos, diagrams and resources. If you want to stop supporting Mid-East Petroleum oil, you must get this book.
Customer Reviews:
good introduction.......2007-07-05
The book is a good introduction to alternative fuels but for the svo conversion I found was not complete enough and doesn't have enough pictures and the diagrams are badly made. For the rest: recipes for biodiesel, and other it's good but still not much details. But anyway it's a must for anyone interested in the subject, being the only book available, but before doing anything ask around for more precise and recent advance in this technology.
Ecellent bio-diesel primer.......2006-11-10
This book is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in learning the basics of the renewable fuel bio-diesel.
Mr. Tickell does an excellent job in presenting the argument as to why, from an economic and envrionmental standpoint, our government should invest in renewable fuels. Job creation, reduced trade deficit, and the environment to name a few.
The most astounding bit of information I gleaned from this book is that the most promising future of bio-diesel lies in algea.
This book is worth the investment.
From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank: The Complete Guide to Using Vegetable Oil as an Alternative Fuel .......2006-11-10
Very helpful but quite thechnical...
Couldn't put it down.......2006-07-27
This is a great book for those interested in the subject. It was light enough to be able to read through in just a few hours, but detailed enough to be able to build practical biodeisel powered systems and processing equipment. It's a great resource. I gave it 4 stars because I believe the author glanced over details regarding deisel particulate emmisions and the clear bias toward Gaia.
Well Worth the Stink!.......2006-05-08
This is a very valuable book with very easy to follow directions to help you get free fuel at your local chinese restaurant or wing-stop. I've been able to provide two of my boys with free vegetable oil based fuel for their Nissan 4*4 turbo diesel pick ups. We filter the oil ourselves and despite the stink, it is a very rewarding venture. We have recouped our expenses and have put away over three thousand dollars between the two of them with the money that we saved. Life is fun! This book will help you with all you need to know. I only gave it four stars because I also greatly disagree with the authors Gaia earth worship global warming propganda, but if you can get past that, the meat of the matter is great.

Best book on Sherman Tanks !.......2007-02-27
. 2006 hard bound in dust jacket, , r/p of the 1994 edition, . in a slip case, , 8 3/4 x 11 1/4 , glossy paper , 576 pp , 1368 illus & drgs. , 12 color plates, appendices , index.
.....This exclusive high-quality print run is limited to only 1,000 copies in a collector's slip case. Finally back in print, R.P. Hunnicutt's "bible" on the M4 Sherman Tank begins with the pre-war evolution of the U.S. medium tank resulting in the introduction of the M3 and its Canadian counterpart the "RAM." The confusion after Pearl Harbor and the pressure for ever increasing production provide the background for the appearance of the Sherman in Part II. The war situation in early 1942 required large numbers of tanks to equip both the U.S. armored units in training and the Allied Armies already fighting around the world. This resulted in the major models of the Sherman with designations ranging from M4 to M4A6.
Part II ends with the Sherman committed to action first at El Alamein and then in theaters of operation around the world. Battle experience soon indicated the need for further improvements. Part III details the development projects necessary to effect these changes and their incorporation into the production program. The important British modifications including the installation of the 17 pounder high velocity gun are also included. The ready availability of the Sherman chassis made it the ideal candidate to carry various self-propelled artillery weapons and antitank guns. These vehicles as well as other specialized armor are discussed in part IV.
..After WWII, the Sherman continued to serve not only the U.S. Army, but was used to rearm many friendly nations whose armed forces were destroyed during the war. With the outbreak of fighting in Korea, the Sherman again went into action as is covered in Part V. Part VI is composed of reference material presented in data sheets covering the major production models of the M3 and M4 series.
Best Sherman Book - But Don't Pay More than $130.......2006-10-31
This book is the Sherman Bible, but you should not spend more than $130 for this title. This book is in the process of being republished by RZM and it will have a list price of $130(US).
The Sherman Tank Bible........2003-07-24
The Sherman tank is without question, the most famous armored fighting vehicle in the history of modern warfare. The book "Sherman: A History of the American Medium Tank", by R.P Hunnicutt, is an masterful reference text second to none. Although, this book is long out of print, it is without question the bible, to sherman tank historians. No book ever published on this tank can match the endless array of photo's and text detailing every variation of this tank. You get to see the tank from it's early design as a platform to the M3 Grant/Lee during the early stages of WW-2. The Sherman was used for every job imaginable. Soldiers would adapt their tank as needed for whatever condition awaited them. You see Sherman tanks, used as mine sweepers, marine assault float tanks, flame throwers, bulldozers, open turreted M10 tank destroyers, a british heavy hitting firefly variation, just to name a few. The tank had unmatched longevity, serving in the Korean conflict and in the Israeli army as late as the early 1970's. If you are a military historian or a student of armored warfare, I cannot recommend a better book that chronicles an American tank in such A to Z detail. The Sherman tank was not the most feared tank in the theater of WW-2 operations, but it's overwhelming production numbers and mechanical reliability and adaptability, surely helped the allies win the war.
The standard reference on the M4 Sherman medium tank.......1998-04-24
Even though this work dates back to 1978, it can still be regarded as the ultimate book on the M4 Sherman. It describes the pre-war development of the American medium tanks, then covers the development and production of the M3 Lee/Grant including all marks and variants. The M4 development and production is covered in detail with all marks and variants, upgrades and modifications. British service and modification are also covered. Postwar employment and conversions are included, even though Israeli and other post war conversions are not covered in detail.
There are extremely detailed specifications of the M3 and M4, all marks and many of the variants like the M7 and M10. You will also find the specs on most weapons employed on the M3, M4 and variants.
If you are interrested in the technical development and production of the M3 and M4 tanks, this book is a must. Well written with 100s of b/w illustrations it is, despite the price, great value.

very excellent detailed book.......2007-10-14
This book is well written and complete. I feel that after reading this book I can safely capture rainwater and I know all the details to think about when designing our system, specific reasons to place pipes etc in specific places ... an excellent detailed referrence book and enjoyable read; I read the entire book and enjoyed it. If you are seriously considering to have a rainwater catchment system this is a must read.
Water - more important than oil.......2007-08-25
Wow! This book has a ton of usefull, usable information packed into such a thin booklet! No wasted space, which makes me feel that I've not wasted my money on this book! If you are serious about helping to save this planet, or even just surviving the next tragedy that may befall upon us: Get. This. Book.
Can I just say again: WOW!
Save It!.......2007-08-14
What a shame that so much water is wasted...especially when our roofs and gutters simply make a mess rather than being utilized to store rainwater. This book will help even the urban dweller to get in on using precious water for immediate use. For the country folks, it will help in better planning for future use. Highly recommended.
Water Storage: Tanks, Cisterns, Aquifers and Ponds........2007-08-04
Too much social and environmental commentary which I have noticed is common for books on this subject. I just want information on how to best design and build a water collection system. The benefits are obvious to anyone who would buy this book so why use half the book to convince the reader?
for everyone that uses water.......2007-02-08
I found this book very informative. Lots of easy to understand information. It has affected the way I store drinking water, even in small amounts simply to bring on a bike ride or to work.
Well written. A wealth of information without having to wade through a bunch of extranious fluff.
Book Description
The Tiger and King Tiger tanks gained legendary status during World War II. Numerous tank commanders attained phenomenal tallies of kills and accomplished extraordinary feats during combat in these tanks, building the legend to near mythic proportions after the war.
During WWII, the Germans created eleven Army and three Waffen-SS heavy tank battalions. These heavy tank battalions were employed in nearly every part of Europe against almost every enemy of Germany. As vast in breadth and scope as the employment of Tiger battalions themselves, Sledgehammers provides historical examples and analysis of heavy tank battalions' actions in North Africa, Normandy, Italy, the Ardennes Offensive, and numerous battles on the Eastern Front including Operation ZITADELLE/the Battle of Kursk, Operation BAGRATION, the battle of the Cherkassy Pocket, late war attacks to relieve Budapest, and many other more minor engagements.
Although a great deal has already been published about Tiger tanks' technical details and some of the units which used them, until now, very little has been written concerning the organization and tactical employment of these tanks throughout the German armed forces and across the theaters in which they were employed. Sledgehammers provides an in-depth look at heavy tank battalions' organizations and tactics, including the tactical doctrine by which these elite units were supposed to fight and how they were actually employed on the battlefield by their commanders and crews.
Even given the Tiger's reputation, many readers will be amazed by the fearsome casualties inflicted by the crews of many of these behemoth armored vehicles. It is safe to say that no other armored vehicle of the war wreaked as much havoc among enemy formations as Tigers. Many will, however, also find it equally stunning to learn of the Tigers' many technical and tactical vulnerabilities. Through the systematic use of extremely detailed primary source and other impeccably reliable research, Sledgehammers demolishes several major myths about Tigers in World War II.
Meticulously researched and written with the perspective and respect for Tigers' crews that only a professional tanker can bring to the subject, Sledgehammers synthesizes information to provide new and definitive insights into the strengths and flaws of World War II's most feared and legendary tanks.
Prologue by famed Tiger ace Otto Carius. Epilogue by Tiger killers Viktor Iskrov and Ray Holt.

Operational Analysis of Tigers........2007-01-09
This book features operational analysis of Tiger battalions. I was surprised to find concise maps of each operation in this book. While I am still reading it, I felt a brief positive review was in order.
sledgehammers: strengths & flaws of tiger battalions.......2006-08-03
great book, this is second one i got. first one i lost after barely reading it. love it. good stories about how individual units lived & fought
Fasinating reading.......2006-07-22
This book is a study of the German Tiger tanks. The writer starts with a brief summary of the early history of the tigers. Then goes on and discusses many battles that had the tigers. He then presents his conclusions that they were are great tank but the Germans never developed a proper military doctrinal guidance that could have used them. As such they were used mainly as tank killers. In this I think he makes a strong case.
However I am not sure that he has proven his case that the tigers were that much better tank killers compared to other German tanks. For example, I have read of some Panthers devastating Allied tanks too in figures equal to what he quotes of Tigers. Overall in both fronts for different reasons the Germans tanks tended to do better.
In the west the Allied tanks were deficient compared to German tanks in armour, mobility and armament. This can be seen as in August in Normandy the Germans had about 1,400 various tanks while the Allies had about 6,000. The Allies losses in tanks were about 3:1. Then put in all the allied air and artillery and you get a feel of the problem.
The Russian figures are disputed with wide range but its clear that overall the Germans lost far fewer tanks then the Russians. The Russian loss ratio is probably higher then the West.
Its an interesting question considering the high cost of the Tiger weapon system. Which the writer does discuss.
Overall the tiger, I wish had more description. The battles are well discussed. The maps are extremely good. I hope that other historians that use this book copy him in producing such maps. The book is certainly worth reading if you are interested in this subject.
Steve thinks that ..........2006-03-06
Very careful in the historical documentation. Very sharp in the critical assesment of the tactical doctrine underlying the battlefield deployement of the Tigers.
As advertised.......2006-01-12
This book is exactly what the title says it is. Very concise. Doesn't get bogged down in minutia. After reading it, I was amazed at just what was accomplished with these tanks. From other sources, I knew that Tigers and Tiger II's had maintenance problems. In no way did I realize just how extensive these problems were until reading this. Start the day with 45 operational tanks. Drive them 10 miles down a road, and have 6 tanks able to fight. But then attain a 10+ plus kill ration.
The author presents all this information very objectively, which is something I also appreciate.
Book Description
In America's island-hopping war against Japan, the U.S. Marines were our cutting edge. Yet, until now, little has been written about the desperate combats fought by the Marines' own spearheads - their tanks. It is a story of trial and error, incredible courage, and finally, triumph.
In the early island campaigns, Marine tankers went into battle inexperienced and inadequately trained. In a series of costly battles and jungle campaigns - Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bouganville, Cape Gloucester, Tarawa, Marianas, Peleliu, Saipan and Okinawa - Marine tankers proved beyond doubt that they were essential in achieving victory. Despite suffering sometimes staggering losses, the Marines and their tanks eventually crushed fierce Japanese resistance.
Marine Tank Battles in the Pacific is a gripping narrative that combines exhaustive detail on Marine armor and combat with moving eyewitness accounts, never before published, of what it was actually like to be a Marine tanker in action in the Pacific - awe inspiring bravery in the face of a skilled and fanatic foe.
Customer Reviews:
Marine Tank Battles in the pacific; A REVIEW.......2007-01-09
As a former U.S. Army Tanker in the late 1960s I could empathize with the tankers daily routine of movement and maintenance. The long underpaid overworked hours one puts in as a track-head. Being couped up, nearly blind in a turret wondering what was going on outside of one' pony. I was truly amazed at the bravery and dedication of the WWII Marine Corp. Tankers, the appalling carnage they witnessed and the pathos of combat. The author brought all this and more to life in his writing. At times I got sick from the bloody battles they and the infantry fought in the Pacific Theater. Having served in the far east I can imagine easily the mental and physical toll the heat, humidity and insects took on one's mind and body. I feel that the political leaders of this county should read this before committing us to war.
Worth It, But It's a Cheaply-Done Reprint.......2006-08-20
The book's information is priceless, and I AM glad I bought it, BUT Amazon dropped the ball by not revealing the actual publisher. This is a reprint done by DaCapo Press, and they cut corners. The pictures are terrible and nearly indistinct. The slip-cover is fine, but you look at the spine, and there's one word printed : Gilbert. The quality of the binding is good, but these guys didn't give this wonderful book the treatment it deserved.
If this all that we have, and if you are a collector of US Marine histories, then you'd better grab up that last copy. Be forewarned, though, that this is a subpar reissue of the original Combined Press edition.
Confirm the publisher before buying.......2006-02-07
As a retired Marine officer, amateur historian and former newsman, I can say Gilbert is a knowledgeable and facile writer. I thoroughly enjoyed "Marine Tank Battles in Korea." Gilbert knows how to write popular history, and he gets it right. This volume reads beautifully, however the half-tones are the pits. The original version of this volume was published by Combined Publishing on quality paper with excellent photo reproduction. The volume I received from Amazon was not the Combined Publishing edition, but one by DaCapo Press. It looks like a photocopy of the original done overseas. Most of the pictures are muddy and indecipherable. Useless as a modeling reference, but great reading.

Outstanding Book on WW2 Tank Warfare in the Pacific.......2005-10-23
This superb book gives exciting descriptions of tank battles fought by Marines during WW2. Since both the American and Japanese used tanks in an infantry support role, most battles were fought with small groups of tanks. The book describes the battles in which tanks were used in support of infantry. This includes use of Japanese tanks in support of their infantry against the US troops. The book also details the few, brief tank vs. tank battles between the US Marines and the Japanese. The author does an excellent job describing the overall battle of each island, the roll of the American and Japanese tanks in them., and first hand accounts of small actions. The book also includes about 100 photographs which provide a good idea what much of the terrain and combat were like. This is a must have for anyone interested in armored warfare or the WW2 war in the Pacific. I only wish I could find a comparable book on the US army tank battles in the Pacific.
Great book on a little noted subject..........2001-04-13
Marines and tanks? Who would ever write about this? This book is long overdue. Every book on the Pacific was mentions breifly the role Marine Tanks. This book covers that gap in grand style. I shows the development of Marine Armor, and its employemnt in some of the bloodiest battles of the war. This book on the Corps unsung heros, is faced paced and very easy to read. If you read other books about the USMC in the Pacific, read this very worthy book.

Let's get one thing straight right off the bat. Children love books with flaps. They can't get enough of them. And this book has many, many flaps--over 60, in fact. Something else: children are crazy about Thomas the tank engine. Translation? Very young readers will happily spend a lot of time lifting and learning with this big, bright, colorful board book. Early learning concepts are reinforced on each page, as readers are encouraged to explore their knowledge of colors, numbers, sizes, everyday objects, and the alphabet. Thomas the tank engine travels through the pages, starting out early in the morning in the train shed and moving through the stations, dropping off parcels and passengers, and finally ending up in the freight yard with car after car full of important objects to be delivered, such as milk, doors, a piano, a kangaroo, and xylophones. Children should be allowed to roam freely over the pages of this book, making up their own stories related to the pictures they discover under the flaps. (Ages 2 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Great Share Time Book!.......2007-09-06
I am enjoying this book for the third "time". The kids enjoy lifting the flaps to see what is behind them and never seem to tire of it. We have explored the alphabet and learned new words. We have reinforced counting and touched on basic math. This book helps spark the imagination and the stories that little ones can come up with are marvelous. I have 3 very different grandsons, but this book has given me hours of enjoyment with each one of them in their turn. It is the book most requested during visits from Nana.
Good for 2 year olds.......2007-07-23
We've gotten a good 4 months use out of this book, with several fringe benefits to lifting up the tabs and looking. We can practice recognition of the trains' (where is Percy, Thomas, etc.), look for colors, make sounds (the cuckoo clock, dog barking, trains of course). The numbered flaps are a little hard to see, but still fun to look. When I was able to keep them from tearing the flaps off entirely, we enjoyed the anticipation of looking underneath them. Worth the price because it's interactive and parents can make more of the pictures than just the flaps if so inclined.
Good Book.......2007-07-19
We have 2 of this book so we could leave one at granny's. My son loves Thomas and this book. The reason it only got 4 stars is the lift flaps are not all that durable and we are missing some out of both books.
Big Quality Book that will become a favorite...........2007-07-04
The only reason I didn't give it five stars is there is no story- but that only seems to bother the parents. Both my boys love this book (age four and five) and it's a frequent pick at bedtime. The cardboard is heavy duty and the doors are firmly attached: they still close after two years and none have torn off! It's over sized, so all the details are easy to see... and there is ALOT to see! The scenes are spread out over two facing pages with each having a different focus: from the alphabetical freight cars A to Z to counting in the cargo cases and opposites in the depot. The lack of story might be on purpose as we spend a lot of time taking about what's going on in the different scenes. If your little ones are Thomas fans- it's a bonus, but not a requirement.
Hope your children enjoy this book as much as mine... well maybe a little less (I do get tired of the same book night after night after night... ;)
Lots of fun.......2007-06-29
My two-year-old likes this book a lot. There are plenty of flaps to look under. The pages are about things like colors, numbers, and the ABCs. I was a little sad there wasn't a story, but my son doesn't care.

Wonderful essays and good recipes.......2007-04-10
"The Oldways Table" is less of a cookbook and more of a guide to finding and enjoying the most healthy, delicious, and fine foods the world has to offer. The mission of Oldways is "to help consumers make wise choices about eating, drinking, and lifestyle," and to emphasize "the traditional pleasures of the table." In some ways this makes it a rather gourmet book with sections on imported cheeses, wines, olive oils, and more, which might make it seem inaccessible to poorer sections of the populace. However, there's also a great deal of information of use to anyone, discussing various aspects of sustainable food production (ensuring we make food choices that contribute to the availability of food in generations to come), healthy diet and more, all couched in terms of delicious food rather than dense scientific terms.
"The Oldways Table" includes many memoir-like interludes filled with enjoyable tales of rustic clambakes or authentic meals in historic cities, and it certainly makes a leisurely and fascinating read. I know far more than I did before about the production of cheese, the difference between processed cheese, unprocessed cheese, and unpasteurized cheese, and so on. It's interesting to know exactly what goes into making the best of the cured meats of Italy, and what makes them different from region to region.
The recipes themselves are largely simple and quite delicious. There's a dish of edamame beans, olive oil and sea salt that is positively alchemical in its simple and luscious taste. An eggplant-based soup made us sigh with delight. Unfortunately, while the tastes were delicious, it definitely helps to have plenty of kitchen experience when you make these recipes, as some of them don't appear to have had much kitchen-testing. For example, the "creamy vanilla bread pudding with cherry compote" is absolutely divine, but the instructions have a few... issues. For starters, the first direction is to preheat the oven, but then before using it you complete another several steps that take about an hour and a half. The recipe calls for "4 to 5 cups cubed white bread (enough to fill a 9 by 13-inch pan)", yet 4-5 cups of bread wasn't even close enough to "fill" a 9 x 13 pan, so I had to guess whether the amount was the important part or the filling the pan was the important part (I decided to almost-fill the pan, and it worked out well).
Since the recipes are the lesser part of the book by volume and quality-control, I'd primarily recommend this book to those interested in reading and learning about healthy, sustainable food choices and practices. If you have the experience in the kitchen to trouble-shoot any mistakes you find, then certainly do make the recipes--they're quite delicious and enjoyable!
Book good for the novice and the gourmand.......2007-02-02
I really enjoyed this book (as did my mom who also has a copy!). For the foodies, it has all the big names and the stories that you want to read from Lydia Bastianich to Elizabeth Luard. For those who want to know the WHY behind certain foods, such as the rise of whole grains AND the HOW with recipes, this book is perfect. While lacking images (I love to see what a meal looks like before I cook it), there are enough inside tips from the basics on beans to selecting wines to balance it out. It reads like a good meal- satisfying.
