    Book Description

The Jacobite Wars is a detailed exploration of the Jacobite military campaigns of 1715 and 1745, set against the background of Scottish political, religious and constitutional history. The author has written a clear and demythologized account of the military campaigns waged by the Jacobites against the Hanoverian monarchs. He draws on the work of recent historians who have come to emphasize the political significance of the rebellions (which had been dismissed by earlier historians), showing the danger faced by the Hanoverian regime during those years of political and religious turbulence.

    Book Description

The heart of this book is the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's army at Culloden. It strips away the myth and exposes the realities of life in the Jacobite rebel army. It begins with the raising of the army which included volunteers, 'pressed men' and mercenaries, as well as French forces that were sent over to assist as part of the 'Auld Alliance'. Unit organization, weapons, and tactics are discussed and the book also details the vicious battles that were fought in this doomed attempt to secure the British crown.

After the Jacobite rebellion was finally crushed at Culloden, many of the survivors were surprisingly drafted into the British Army alongside their former enemies and saw service in North America during the French-Indian War. The wonderful color plates and rare images illustrate the variety of uniforms that were worn ranging from tartan to regular army dress. This is an essential introductory guide to the Jacobite Armies as well as a definitive reference to the uniforms and weaponry of the period.

5 out of 5 stars Reveal the underlying truths about the event........2006-11-05

New additions to Osprey's military history titles are specific, detailed, and perfect additions for collections which go beyond the general interest level. Stuart Reid's THE SCOTTISH JACOBITE ARMY 1945-46 tells of an uprising which has been colored and embellished throughout history - but this treatment foregoes some of the color in favor of concrete facts, using the work of historians and modern source references to change the myths and reveal the underlying truths about the event.

    Book Description

Culloden marked the end of the last and greatest of the Jacobite adventures - the '45 Rebellion - in which the Highland clans challenged the power of the Hanoverian King of England. It was at Culloden that Charles Edward Stuart's army was finally defeated. His tired Highlanders had little chance against the steady infantry and heavy artillery fire of the English. Peter Harrington examines all aspects of the battle, including its background, the earlier Highlander victories, the men and commanders of both sides, and the massacre that took place in its aftermath.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Stuart Reid.......2003-02-28

Although certain flawed presumptions are made, spelling mistakes are present and there are other minor errors, on balance this is a good resource.

Unlike Stuart Reid's anti-Highland hyperbole, there is a genuine attempt at objectivity here. Well worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars A Balanced Campaign Summary.......2001-07-22

Peter Harrington provides a balanced summary of the famous Jacobin rising in the '45 in Scotland, which culminated in their defeat at Culloden in 1746. The account of the Culloden campaign and the events leading up to it are depicted in solid prose, which is supported by excellent illustrations and maps. The campaign maps alone are well-worth purchasing this volume, surpassing those in other more detailed accounts.

Like many of the Osprey titles, the section on opposing leaders is inadequate, focusing only on Prince Charles and the Duke of Cumberland. The subordinate commanders such as Murray and Hawley who actually fought the battle are given much shorter shrift. Jacobin reasons for fighting at Culloden are murky in this account. The author also gives too much stress to British modified bayonet tactics to deal with the Highland charge, but this exaggerates the effect of cold steel; the Jacobins were defeated by artillery and massed musketry. The order of battle on both sides is vague, with no strengths provided, which is odd considering that this information is readily available in secondary sources.

The illustrations are excellent but they tend to perpetuate the myth of the Highlander armed with broadsword and target. Information on Jacobin weapons captured at Culloden indicate that only one in five had a sword and that the Jacobins relied on muskets, not swords.

The author's conclusions are solid, with much good information on the aftermath of Culloden. There is no attempt to whitewash the truth here, that the British army which had won a great victory on the field at Culloden, then proceeded to tarnish its reputation with brutal retributions upon Scottish civilians. The author also takes a brief look at alternative options available to Charles. I used this volume as a handy reference when I visited the Culloden battlefield and found the photographs very useful for identifying key features in the engagement. This volume is one of the better early books in the Osprey Campaign series.

I have been a historic re-enactor for over two years now, Studying Scottish history. I first picked this book up in a comic shop of al places. Since no one else has chosen to do so I will review this book. Peter Harington has written definitive guide to the battle of Culloden. he delivers an unbiased review of the history that leads to and the battle that wasthe last charge of the Highlanders. Perfect for the re-enactor, war gammer,or casual historian. A complete description of the field maneuverings gives the reader a good understanding of how the battle was won and lost. As well the insertion of unproven myths as well as what myths are pure fiction add dynamic flare to the book making it a bit more than your humdrum battle review. If you've ever wanted to know why Scotland is no longer free pick it up ye might learn something me boy.

    3 out of 5 stars 1745 A Military History.......2002-03-23

While the historical information of the battles themselves was excellent and well presented, Reid glossed over the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. Not only combatants were killed, but women and children. Of the captured, some were beheaded, some were hanged, drawn and quartered, and nearly a thousand people were sold as indentured servants, doomed to a lifetime of slavery in Barbados. Cumberland was a good soldier, but his actions after the battle earned him the nickname of "Butcher."

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Military Analysis.......2001-07-22

1745 is a military history of the Jacobite rising in Scotland, starting with the landing of Prince Charles in July 1745 and culminating in his defeat at Culloden in April 1746. Stuart Reid, a former NCO in the British army, has written a detailed operational account of the campaign that sheds light on many of the more obscure corners of this famous rebellion. Whereas most accounts focus primarily on Culloden, Reid provides considerable detail on many of the minor operations and minor players in the campaign, such as the ten Dutch and six Hessian battalions that were brought to England for garrison duty.

The core value that this book provides is solid and detailed information on the order of battle, strengths, training, leadership, equipment and losses of both armies. Two appendices cover the respective armies in great depth. The author's analysis reveals interesting facets that are ignored or neglected in less detailed accounts, such as the fact that only about one in five of the Jacobin soldiers carried a broadsword into battle. Stuart's data clearly shows that the popular image of a Highlander fighting with sword and target were more myth than reality. The infantry of both armies relied primarily on muskets, but the difference lay in tactics; the British preferred firepower while the Jacobins preferred column attacks. It is also interesting how fragile the morale and discipline was in both armies; even at the victorious Battle of Prestonpans, many Highlanders hid until they were sure they were on the winning side. Even British "regular" troops (many of whom were recently raised) were prone to rout. In this war, battles were decided by which army would rout first.

While the author provides good detail on the Jacobin invasion of England, he provides no map on this interesting part of the rebellion. However, he does make the point that the Jacobins failed to consolidate in Scotland before invading England, leaving a number of English garrisons in their rear. In fact, the small garrison of Edinburgh Castle was able to "liberate" the city without external assistance. Once the invasion failed, the demoralized Jacobin army returned to Scotland and began to reduce some of the British garrisons, but vital time had been lost. During this period in the winter of 1745/1746, the author details various French attempts to land reinforcements for the rebels and the activities of the numerous "minor" militias on both sides.

Interestingly, the final Battle of Culloden was brought about because the British threatened the rebel's vital stockpile of oatmeal in Inverness. In modern parlance, this stockpile was the Jacobin "center of gravity" because they could not continue large-scale operations without adequate rations. Prince Charles was presented with three courses of action: withdraw into the Highlands and conduct guerilla operations, defend Inverness or launch a daring, night-time spoiling attack to upset the impending British offensive. While withdrawal might have been better for the Scottish clansmen, it would have signaled the end of Charles' bid to regain the thrown for the Stuart cause. Charles, always the gambler, opted for the daring night attack but when it aborted in chaos, he was forced to mount a hasty defense at Culloden. The tired, hungry and outnumbered Jacobin army was forced to fight on terrain that did not favor their hasty assault tactics and they were defeated.

After such a well-balanced account, it is surprising to see the author produce such a biased and whitewashing conclusion. There is no mention of "Butcher" Cumblerland, the British commander, or the atrocities that his army committed after the victory at Culloden. While other accounts, such as John Prebble's excellent Culloden, point out the incredible brutality of the British "mop up" operations, Reid fails to address this issue. Indeed, it was a very sorry chapter in the history of the British Army, with British troops involved in a year-long killing, burning, looting and raping spree along the Great Glenn, inflicting harm upon Scottish loyalists as well as Jacobin sympathizers. The author even has the temerity to claim that there was essentially no linkage between Culloden and the Highland "Clearing," while also failing to mention the Disarming Act and the prohibition of clan tartans for the next 36 years. Thus the final chapter of this book should be skipped.

Nevertheless, this book is a valuable source for anyone studying the '45 in Scotland. The military detail provided is particularly useful in giving a full picture of the myriad of activities going on, rather than just focusing on the three big battles as do most accounts.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Tale of the Tragedy of Culloden.......2005-07-27

Yolen and Harris set this story in 1745 with the return of Bonnie Prince Charlie, son of the "Pretender to the English Throne", who has come to Scotland in order to claim the throne for his own. Duncan MacDonald is a 14 year old boy who is taken in by the glory of war and honor and wishes longingly to accompany his father to battle. Things developing as they do, Duncan receives his chance to be in the thick of fighting at the devastating battle of Culloden and he discovers that true war is not anything like he'd thought it would be. A side story of the "fits" Duncan suffers becomes a major plot point later on but is a bit of a distraction. The story is flavored with the dialect of the Scottish people and a glossary is included at the end. This is a realistic portrayal of a young boy's dreams of war and the inevitable shattering of not only the dreams but of lives as well. Good, solid, interesting but not riveting reading.

4 out of 5 stars Prince Across the Water.......2005-03-16

When Bonnie Prince Charles comes home to Scotland and tries to rally his people to retake his throne from the English, he disrupts the lives of all the Scottish people. Duncan and Ewan are two boys from the same village who run off to fight for their prince - a prince they have never seen. Charles is defeated and forced to run for his life, Ewan is killed, and only Duncan is left to remember how he fought for his prince and to pass the legends on to his children.
There are several Scottish words in the text, but the authors have provided us with a little glossary at the end. They also include the factual information that was used in constructing the story. I recommend this book for readers of historical fiction. It is written on a level that makes it usable in middle school, but older readers may enjoy it as well.

    Book Description

Between the first Jacobite rising in 1689 and the final collapse of the cause in 1746, the hopes of the House of Stuart were centred chiefly on Scotland. It is often wrongly assumed that the Jacobite rebellions were a contest between England and Scotland. In fact many Lowland Scots share the feelings of the English, and had cause to hate and fear their fellow countrymen in the Highlands. Thus it was to the Highland clans that the Jacobites looked to for their most reliable manpower. In this book Michael Barthorp details the events of the Jacobite rebellions, and the organisation and uniforms of the forces of both sides.

4 out of 5 stars So what was under their kilts?!.......2007-01-23

It is considerably easier to visualize what happened at the Battle of Culloden if you have information on what was worn by the participants. The differences between the well-uniformed and armed English and the highly individualized Scottish clans foretell the eventual outcome. The illustrations are copious, clear and fascinating. There is even a fine explanation of exactly how a Scottish kilt is put on - to do it the traditional way requires the wearer to lie on the ground! Even from a strictly aesthetic vantage point, the variety, color and design of the uniforms and clan garb are revealed to be as fantastic and splendid as anything in the Bird Kingdom. The illustrations are worth repeated visits to check on details missed the first couple of times around!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice little volume.......2004-08-01

A very nice little volume enhanced to no end by absolutely brilliant colour plates.

The meat of this book is the text, illustrated almost completely with contemporary paintings and etchings made during the period covered by the book. The first few pages are dedicated to a detailed chronology of the rebellions, followed by a description of the Jacobite forces (with info on the cause itself, the makeup of Highland society, weapons in use at the time (with photos of museum artifacts to support this info), and a brief order of battle of one Jacobite force that took to the field in this period), a look at the Government forces (focussing on the political makeup of the United Kingdom at this time, the organization of the Army, armament in use, and a survey of Regiments that saw action at this time). A final section on uniforms is well done, and augmented by the final section on captions to the colour plates.

The book is obviously only a brief overview, but the colour plates go far in bringing the subject to life - much further than most other treatments of this subject that rely on contemporary art, or simply text, to describe the subject. There is no deeper analysis of such things as rank structure of the British Army, feudal law, Highland recipes etc. just a nice concise history and glimpse at how the combatants dressed and were equipped.

Great starting point, and Embleton's artwork alone is worth the price - very clear, almost photo realistic depictions of soldiers of both sides, in realistic yet not overpowering settings. Probably the best faces of any of the many talented artists in Osprey's stable. The difficulties of rendering tartan cloth have also been well overcome.

Can't think of a single improvement to suggest for a book with the obviously limited intended scope of this one.

Culloden Moor is the last and one of the most famous battles in British history. On 16 April 1746 the Duke of Cumberland's government army defeated the Jacobite rebels led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

In this concise account Stuart Reid, the leading authority on Culloden, sets out in a graphic and easily understood way the movements and deployments of the opposing armies and describes in detail the close and deadly combat that followed.

His account incorporates the results of the latest documentary and archaeological research and he provides a full tour of the battlefield so that visitors can explore for themselves the historic ground on which this momentous event took place.

4 out of 5 stars Culloden from the Governments view.......2003-11-04

I originally bought this book to get my information about the Duke of Cumberland. Although it talks of Cumberland, he is but one of the many people viewed in this book. Mr. Speck gives us the events and political actions of the rebellion of 45 and the culmination of "the forty-five" at Culloden. It main focus is to show that the rebellion was not widely supported at all. That the highland army massed about the Young Pretender was relatively large; they represented a small minority when compared to greater Scotland. Mr. Speck shows that the Rebellion although feared was not supported and with any amount of resistance by George II and his administration it would have crumbled anyway. Many modern historians seem to romanticize the Young Pretender and his run through Scotland but we see more of the follies he lead and the fluff created by time. We also see that due to the "Aggressive" prosecution of the battle of Culloden the Jacobite rebellion all but ended and another rebellion never occurred. Good book. A bit tedious at times but nice to see a new point of view on an old and very important event in the history of Great Britain and especially Scotland and the Jacobites.

4 out of 5 stars Seeing the Whole Picture, But ..........2004-07-01

Jeremy Black has presented us with the entire mosaic of the Jacobite uprising in the mid-18th century. It is fascinating to see how he weaves the political and religious movements going on in George II's London, with Spain, Paris and the Low Countries into one larger picture. At times authors tend to be so myopic about their subject, but this gives us a broader field of vision. What this text does not do, however, is spend very much time, at all, on the Battle at Culloden Moor, which is what I was looking for. I found it tremendously profitable, if at times laborous, reading but distant from my hoped for goal. Perhaps the title should not have an emphasis on Culloden but rather on the entire Jacobite movement that surrounded the young Pretender.
