Book Description

By the big red barn
In the great green field,
There was a pink pig
Who was learning to squeal.

There were horses and sheep and goats and geese--and a jaunty old scarecrow leaning on his hoe. And they all lived together by the big red barn. In joyous and exuberant

Pictures, Felicia Bond lovingly evokes Margaret Wise Brown's simple, rhythmic text about the cycle of a day on a farm, where a family of animals peacefully plays and sleeps.

In the barnyard there are roosters and cows, horses and goats, and a pink piglet who is learning to squeal. Margaret Wise Brown's lulling story about a day in the life of a barnyard is now available as a sturdy board book. Felicia Bond's atmospheric illustrations add to the tranquil simplicity of this story.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning book!.......2007-08-01

Our 18 month old daughter loves this book. Easy to read, easy for her to follow. We enjoy it at bedtime. Words and pictures teach animals, some numbers, colors, etc. Much to gain from this book! Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars One of our favorites!.......2007-06-14

This book is such a classic. My kids love it, but it is also one of my favorites. As with most Margaret W. Brown books, the words just flow and capture the kids' attention. My son loves horses, so he really loves the pictures of the farm animals. I like this book even more than "Goodnight Moon."

3 out of 5 stars Better Offerings Out There.......2007-05-13

The illustrations in this book are good but too small in the board book format for little ones. If you really want this book, purchase the traditional sized hardback edition.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-05-12

I can recite this book by heart and so can my 2 1/2 year old grand daughter. Sometimes we will be driving or playing in the yard and I will start reciting and she will join in. At night when you read it together and look at the beautiful pictures, it calms you and relaxes you (and the child) and gets you set for a nice nights sleep. I can not give it more then 5 stars but I would if I could. Every good grandmother should have this in her arsenal!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-09

This is a great book to read to your child beginning at an early age. The colors are wonderful for them to look at. As you read the story you can teach them all about farm animals. Highly recommend this book to all parents.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and easy to make recipes.......2007-08-27

This is an excellent cook book on American barbequeing and the recipes I have made have been easy to make and delicious.I have been a bit dubious about some of the recipes after I have read the ingredients list but every time the recipes have turned out better than expected but exactly how the author Ray Lampe described. For instance I made the creamy coleslaw and it didn't sound like it would be that good but it was easy to make and the best coleslaw I have tasted.By contrast I have made a coleslaw from 'The Best Recipe cook book American Classics'and this has had a long description and went into great detail about every stage of making the coleslaw but the end result has been very disappointing. The book also contains little anecdotes about each recipe and the world of competition barbequeing and this all adds to the book.Overall this is an excellent book and I will be buying the rest of Ray Lampe's cook books.

4 out of 5 stars The Dr. is in.......2007-06-27

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. BBQ at the Arkansas Literary Festival a couple of years ago. I bought his book then, and recently purchased another for my son.

Unlike most cookbooks, this one isn't just recipes and clinical information about the ingredients and preparation methods. Dr. BBQ includes stories about the people behind the recipes, as well as his own philosophy about weighty questions such as: Gas, charcoal, wood or pellets? Charcoal? Well then, chunk or briquette?

And to the people who insist that using gas isn't the way to prepare REAL bbq or charcoal isn't and so on, the Dr. suggests that unless they are going out naked and killing an animal with a stick before cooking it then THEY aren't really preparing bbq the traditional way either.

Good fun, good food, good guy. The recipes are easy to follow and produce great Q, but I must admit, I use this book for inspiration much more than for the recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Good cooking.......2007-04-10

Ray knows his stuff and can clearly express it. This ought to be your first reference when you're setting the menu.

I've cooked with and written about the man, and I love this book. Count me as a fan. An excellent source of BBQ tips and a great read.

4 out of 5 stars vampires, werewolves, and pirates oh my!.......2007-09-29

some of the stories were fantastic, some were just good, but hey, isn't that the whole point of getting a collection of short stories? that way you can check out what all the authors are like without committing to a ton of books. i think the book is pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars Anthologies can be tricky things..........2007-08-24

You're never 100% certain of what you're going to get. They can be great for finding new authors and/or filling in the waiting period til the next book from your favourite author. Or they can make you feel like you've wasted your time.

Although word of mouth said that My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding was an uninspiring collection as a big fan of Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris and Sherrilyn Kenyon I wanted to find out for myself.

Where it works - the stories that are set in an ongoing series. Jim Butcher's Something Borrowed is a solid entry into the Harry Dresden series. Although I'm not familiar with Lori Handeland's Night Creatures universe her story (Charmed by the Moon) still managed to draw me in, keep me interested and made me want to check out her backlist.

Sherrilyn Kenyon's story whilst not reaching the emotional intensity of Phantom Lover from the Midnight Pleasures anthology is a vast improvement on Until Death Do We Part (Velkan and Retta's story from the Love at First Bite antho.)Though I wish she would cut down on the point of view head hopping.

One other story that stood out for me was Esther Friesner's The Wedding of Wylda Serene. Whilst slow to get into it had some very witty lines that had me laughing out loud.

Having read the stories I am disappointed. Overall the anthology is okay, but there is not enough here that stands out. Maybe it's a case of trying to cram too many authors in to one book.

Anthologies I would recommend - for Sherrilyn Kenyon - Midnight Pleasures, Stroke of Midnight. For Charlaine Harris - Bite (as part of the ongoing Sookie series), Night's Edge (standalone story).

5 out of 5 stars One of the best anthologies I've read.......2007-06-08

Usually anthologies are like panning for gold. You've got to sift through a lot of dirt to get the gold nuggets. This anthology, however, was the motherlode. All the stories were entertaining. Out of the nine, the last two were the weakest, but still a good short read.

I was pleasantly surprised by Charlaine Harris's contribution. I expected a Sookie story, but instead received a good vampire/werewolf story with no Sookie in sight. It is alwasy nice to see another part of the world which an author has created.

Jim Butcher was in true form with his entry. Gee I just love Harry Dresden, no matter what he is doing.

All in all I recommend this book for a short quick read. I already have a waiting list of people who want to borrow it from me.

4 out of 5 stars teaser!.......2007-05-31

what a teaser! Just when u are getting into one of the story, its over! but i guess that is what u can expect from and anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! great collection.......2007-04-23

This collection was just stunning! Great combo, some of the stories are amazingly funny and a few are very spooky. Wonderful read, but a few at a time, there is definitely some overlap of ideas. P.S. LOOOved the Esther Freisner story. But I'm biased.

Book Description

Although its brown vans are on every block and its delivery service reaches more than 200 countries, UPS is among the world’s most underestimated and misunderstood companies.

For the first time, a UPS “lifer” tells the behind-the-scenes story of how a small messenger service became a business giant. Big Brown reveals the remarkable 100-year history of UPS and the life of its founder Jim Casey—one of the greatest unknown capitalists of the twentieth century. Casey pursued a Spartan business philosophy that emphasized military discipline, drab uniforms, and reliability over flash—a model that is still reflected in UPS culture today.

Big Brown examines all the seeming paradoxes about UPS: from its traditional management style and strict policies coupled with high employee loyalty and strong labor relations; from its historical “anti-marketing” bias (why brown?) to its sterling brand loyalty and reputation for quality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The 20th Century and UPS.......2007-08-31

"Big Brown"is one of the few books on Big Business that I have enjoyed. I kept reading because the author managed to bring in enough context to help me identify with the times as the company grew throughout the 20th century -- much as my experience expanded during those years. The personal story of the founders of UPS reminded me that big business often starts small and grows with perseverance. To the unsophisticated corporate person,it was a good reminder that all successful big entities are not run by blatant profiteers. The book personalizes the century's truly amazing growth in communications and transportation technology.

3 out of 5 stars Uncritical Look at UPS.......2007-08-28

Author Greg Niemann worked for UPS for thirty-five years progressing from loader to management ranks. In Big Brown, he takes us through a brief but not very critical history of this giant of the delivery business.

The book is an interesting, light read but if not an official history of UPS, it is not far off it. The problem with (semi-) official histories is that they tend to be hagiographic and fail to give a genuine insight into the corporation. Compare this book to that written on FedEx by Roger Frock (Changing How the World does Business: FedEx's Incredible Journey to Success) which is much more compelling because of its warts and all detail.

Chapter one leads with "UPS drivers are strong. They're dependable. They're polite. They're determined."!! This tends to be the type of writing throughout the book.
The author attempts to give some detail on UPS founder Jim Casey who started the company in a Seattle basement in 1907. Casey though was a pretty reclusive figure who never sought the limelight. Indeed author Niemann references Casey as the "greatest American capitalist you have never heard of." Some of Casey's management principles were ahead of their time including the proposition - revolutionary at the time - that employees should "achieve a good measure of personal satisfaction and ... aid in the advancement of the interests of all the rest of us."

The famous UPS brown color was chosen because the original management believed that Seattle department stores would be reluctant to relinquish their deliveries to a company with high profile, conspicuous vans.

UPS differs from FedEx and other major carriers in that it is unionized, Although the Teamsters Union forced a general strike in 1997 costing the company $750 million and unknown loss of good will, relations in general have been good. Work conditions are excellent with drivers earning up to $70,000 per annum and six to nine weeks paid leave per year. (Can this be right?) Interestingly, UPS members are vital to the survival of the Teamsters Union as they count for one-fifth of the union's 1.4 million members!!

UPS is a highly structured company governed by the UPS Policy Book which suggests a very conservative company. Family members are not employed under any circumstances (until the original member leaves or retires.) In a rather peculiar turn of phrase, Niemann writes "UPS mandates informality in several ways"!

Although not dealt with in any great depth, UPS was slow to deal with the launch of FedEx (then Federated Express). Indeed, it took eight years for UPS to set up its own air service to combat the FedEx operation. Today UPS is the world's ninth largest airline.

The latter parts of the book are particularly interesting as we see the global growth of UPS both as a carrier and a supply chain expert.

Overall, if you want a general overview of this company, this book fits the bill, but the lack of detail and the generally sycophantic style to the commentary does take away from the overall value of the book.

4 out of 5 stars How UPS Became The Global Force It Is Today.......2007-06-19

UPS began in 1907 in Seattle as a messenger service, and quickly evolved to focus on delivering packages for local department stores - allowing consolidation. Today's urban drivers make about 200 stops/day (free aerobics program, and 1/3 more than at FedEx) with packages weighing up to 150 lbs.

Waiting time for new hires can reach 4-5 years before attaining regular driver status. Those that do average $70,000/year, receive 6-9 weeks vacation each year, and 100% paid medical insurance. The company practices promotion from within as much as possible, and its executives answer their own phones and have no private secretaries.

UPS, however, did not happen overnight. About 65 years were required to cover the nation - the process involved innumerable confrontations with the ICC and state commerce commissions, as well as arranging customers and setting up routes. The really bad news, however, is that it was caught napping by FedEx's foray into overnight delivery and took several years to effectively respond. (UPS had experimented with airplane delivery before, but had not succeeded.)

Today's challenges have expanded from competition to also include becoming more green (reduced mileage via use of computerized routing systems, experimentation with hydrogen fuel cells), increased service around the world, supply-chain management (eg. providing assembly of some customer products, servicing broken computers, direct delivery of Internet orders, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars The definitive corporate biography of UPS.......2007-06-12

The package delivery business is a huge industry that hinges on personnel and logistics, as author Greg Niemann explains in this informative, entertaining biography of the United Parcel Service. Niemann, a UPS career insider, explains how the company became a global leader. He gives credit to the values of its founder, Jim Casey, a hard worker from a humble background. Casey believed in strict routine, safety, precision, shared responsibility and fairness; he pioneered programs to distribute the company's wealth to his employees, while holding them to strict procedures. This absorbing corporate bio is more objective than you might expect, though clearly Niemann is a fan of Casey and UPS. We find that his focus on Casey's entrepreneurship offers a fine example for anyone who is trying to make a company prosper.

5 out of 5 stars Great Memories.......2007-06-08

I worked as a driver and clerk for UPS for 30 years and this book showed me the rich history of this company. They work their employeees very hard but they give you a fair paycheck each week, with great benefits. It was nice to read about UPS.

As usual, great books for kids. Boynton's sense of humor and the cadence of the words she uses keeps kids and moms intrigued.

Sandra Boyton books are always a big hit at our house-she writes some terrific children's books that all kids seem to love!

5 out of 5 stars Fun for parents, too!.......2007-09-15

Since becoming parents 7 1/2 years ago, we have read MANY MANY MANY children's books and I can easily say that Sandra Boynton is our family's favorite author. The illustrations are adorable and the stories are funny, sweet, silly, and quick (which is a huge bonus if it's aready past bedtime). Our hands-down favorite is "Barnyard Dance"...it's especially funny if you can read it as if you're actually the caller at a hoedown. Another favorite is "But Not the Hippopotamus" and "Horns to Toes and In Between" which is great for teaching body parts. If you're looking for silly, cute, and funny, Sandra's books do not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Great for reading over and over!.......2007-09-11

My grandson is 2 years old and he loves thes books. The illustrations are fun and colorful and the verses rhyme and are catchy. After I read one of the books to him he sits down and "reads" it to himself, explaining the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Little ones love these books!.......2007-08-25

I love Sandra Boynton, and this collection has some of my favorites. I read them to my 1 month old and she loves to listen. I know they will be her favorites for several years to come. THe art is fun and colorful without being too busy for young eyes, and the rymes are cute and pleasant for young ears. We even use some of the words from Barnyard Dance during other play time ("with a neigh and a moo and a cockadoodledoo, another little promenade two by two)!

Shocking. Absolutely shocking book. That gal would do anything. I just pray that Dannielynn never reads this book.

5 out of 5 stars can i say gold digger?!!.......2007-10-01

thought the book was very well written. it makes me wonder who can really be a fan of anna nicole. she absolutely seem to be out of control her whole life and used people(yes male and female) for what she could get out of them and step on them on her way to the next. poor daniel didnt have a chance. she exposed this young man to things he should have never seen or known about from a very young age. this story covers her life from about junior high until her death. exposes her lifestyle and the spend spend ways she lived her life.if someone gave her 100,000 she spent 1,000.000. out of control! it is a wonder she lived as long as she did, since she drank and took drugs from 16 till the end. reveals to what lengths she would go to get her hands on money....married men, single men, good men,bad men without ONE BIT OF GUILT!! shocking what depths she would go to. very good read....to bad it is a true story!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Big Beautiful Doll: The Anna Nicole Smith Story.......2007-06-27

I thought this book was well written but thought there were parts that didn't need to be in the book. I didn't think the nude pictures needed to be in the book to sell it.
The book gave a good sense of how Anna Nicole lived and what a weak person she was. She let herself be lead around by people just because she wasn't educated and she loved money and fame. It is worth reading if you were a Anna Nicole fan.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' acquisition for any general lending library.......2007-06-17

GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL: THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH STORY couldn't be more timely: it's released in a newly updated edition to provide a biography of Smith's rise to fame and her glitzy, bright life. The authors aren't outsiders to her life, either: Redding is the photographer who helped launch her career with his Polaroid's; his life was Smith's hairstylist. Their personal relationship with Smith spices her biography and the inclusion of many rare photos makes for a 'must' acquisition for any general lending library; especially those where biographies of celebrities are in demand.

5 out of 5 stars Read it in one night!.......2007-06-17

I liked this book. It was a simple read for a Small Town Girl(who was actually pretty complicated). I new alot of the info, but it put it together nicely and respectfully. I had read part of this book before and lent it out. Admittedly, I bought a second copy after the tragic passing of Anna Nicloe. I am glad I did. It is a Good read, if you want to know how her life unfolded. The pictures featured are a great choice and worth getting the book just for that! If your a fan it's a must.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Millions of readers around the world have fallen in love with the novels of the New York Times bestselling author Adriana Trigiani. In Home to Big Stone Gap, she tells her most powerful story yet, full of humor and heart, wisdom and hope.

Nestled in the lush Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the town of Big Stone Gap has been home for Ave Maria Mulligan Machesney and her family for generations. She’s been married to her beloved Jack for nearly twenty years, raised one child and buried another, and run a business that binds her community together, all while holding her tight circle of family and friends close.

But with her daughter, Etta, having flown the nest to enchanting Italy, Ave Maria has reached a turning point. When a friend’s postcard arrives with the message “It’s time to live your life for you,” Ave Maria realizes that it’s time to go in search of brand-new dreams. But before she can put her foot on the path, her life is turned upside down.

Ave Maria agrees to helm the town musical, a hilarious reunion of local talent past and present. A lifelong friendship collapses when a mysterious stranger comes to town and reveals a long-buried secret. An unexpected health crisis threatens her family. An old heartthrob reappears, challenging her marriage and offering a way out of her troubles. An opportunistic coal company comes to town and threatens to undermine the town’s way of life and the mountain landscape Ave Maria has treasured since she was a girl. Now she has no choice but to reinvent her world, her life, and herself, whether she wants to or not.
Trigiani is at her best in this exquisite page-turner. Home to Big Stone Gap is an emotional and unforgettable journey that reminds us that you can go home again and again.

*STAR* Trigiani, Adriana. Home to Big Stone Gap. Nov. 2006. 301p. Random, $25.95 (1-4000-6008-7).
Tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia is Big Stone Gap, the bucolic backdrop for Trigiani’s popular series. In this fourth entry, Ave Maria Mulligan MacChesney and her husband, Jack, must come to terms with the absence of daughter Etta, newly married and living in Italy. (The country holds a special place in Ave Maria’s heart: her biological father, Mario, whom she learned of and met only after her mother’s death, is Italian). Ave Maria has plenty to keep her mind off missing her only child (the MacChesney’s son, Joe, died of leukemia at age four). She’s a full-time pharmacist and the newly appointed director of the town’s annual musical. Then comes news that her longtime friend, glamorous librarian Iva Lou, has been keeping a startling secret for nearly 20 years. Other developments, including a health scare for Jack and a Christmas visit from a colorful former resident, move the plot along briskly. With her original cast of characters, playwright and television writer Trigiani blends playfulness and pathos in this evocative portrait of a small southern town. Fans of the Big Stone Gap series can look forward to a feature film; Trigiani has written the screenplay and is slated to direct. –Allison Block

1 out of 5 stars Boring..boring..boring.......2007-10-10

After reading the delightful book Queen of the Big Time, I was very disappointed in this book by Adriana Trigani. Somehow it just didn't work. I stuggled to find a plot and to discover in-depth characters who held my interest.

5 out of 5 stars Read her other books first.......2007-09-29

Here I am a book lover and had not read any of Adriana Trigiani's books. Luckily I started with her series on Big Stone Gap. There are 3 of them. Read these first, then finish with the Home to Big Stone Gap. She is a witty but insightful author. She brings chuckles, tears and even good recipe's to the reader. You will not be disapointed!

5 out of 5 stars GOOD READ.......2007-06-01

I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY AUNT. SHE IS FROM THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY. AND SHE ENJOYED READING ABOUT PLACES SHE KNEW.

2 out of 5 stars Time to move on from Big Stone Gap.......2007-05-10

I have really enjoyed this series of books, but this one seemed "forced." I agree with another reiviewr that this book seemed not like a novel, but more of a diary. At the end of the books, usually everything comes together and you feel like you "got" something from the book. When I finished this book, I realized there was absolutely no plot and nothing really happened with the characters. It was really boring, big disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read.......2007-04-22

I have to agree with another poster that Ave comes across as a bit of a whiner in this book. Still, I do enjoy the series and was interested to see how things are going for everyone in Big Stone Gap.

5 out of 5 stars Must have! .......2006-03-21

My mother used to read it to me and now I am reading it to my daugther (she's 2 1/2). It is a family favorite. The story is beautiful, touching, sweet, etc. I love the language/word choice used by the author. I could read it to my daughter every day and not get tired of it. And, the illustrations are exquisite. They are so detailed and beautiful. If you do not own this book, go and buy it. It's worth every penny. You will not be disappointed. They don't make them like this anymore! This is a classic.

This was one of my favorite books growing up. We got it for my 3 year-old son, and he loves it as much as I do. The question of, "What is inside the egg?" is exciting, even though he now knows the answer. We have fun coming up with new possibilities, though.

Bottom line: this is a great, fun book for a toddler. I highly recommend it. It also is useful for parents trying to encourage a child's imagination.

5 out of 5 stars A true picturebook classic.......2004-07-09

Charmingly written by Margaret Wise Brown and superbly illustrated by Leonard Weisgard, The Gold Egg Book is a true picturebook classic telling the story of the rambling imagination of one little bunny as he tries to figure out just what is inside a beautiful blue egg. A whole new generation of children ages 2 to 5 will delight in this lively story as the bunny tries to shake, push, and even jump on the egg in his attempts to break it. But the egg won't hatch until it is ready! The Golden Egg Book will prove to be an enthusiastically popular addition to family, preschool, and community library collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-16

This book is such a sweet, cute book. I am 24 years old and still read it to my nieces every once in a while. I have grown up making my parents read me this book over and over again every night and day. My copy is worn out but it also shows how much I enjoyed it. I hope you decide to buy it and read it to your children they will love it!

5 out of 5 stars What a great, sweet book!.......2006-09-09

This is such a sweet little book! Probably not much past age 5, but the story has a bunny looking for a place to stay or a home of his own. He proceeds to ask everyone he meets if he can live with them and they all say no. However, when he meets a little white bunny, the bunny takes him in and they then live together. The last picture is just so sweet with the two bunnies snuggling together. The illustrations make you touch the page because the bunny looks so fuzzy! It is very much loved in our house and we highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars home for a bunny review.......2006-03-30

I read this book 20+ years ago to my two children and it was their favorite and most requested Little Golden book. It is such a sweet and well illustrated book. My only regret is that I didn't keep it over the years because I now had to go on a search for another copy for my brand new grandchild. My new copy of "Home for a Bunny" will be extremely well used, I'm sure!

My mother used to read this book to me when I was very small, and even twenty years later, I remember the story of the little bunny trying to find a home so vividly! This is such a sweet story, it ends happily, and it has beautiful illustrations as well. A wonderful exploration of the concept of "home." I'm looking forward to reading it to my own children one day.

5 out of 5 stars Life-long favorite.......2005-04-19

My papa used to read this to me when I was a child, and then I apparently grew out of it for a while. I remember coming home from high school during finals week, exhausted. Dad saw me sigh and said, "Well, you're home for a bunny. You can relax now." Memories flooded me and we scrambled to find the book. Now, I've made it a tradition that when a family member or friend is expecting their first child, I give them a copy of this book. It's all about a little bunny(baby)coming home, isn't it? And when I was looking to buy my own first home...well, that's another story.

The writing is sweet and the illustrations charming. Highly recommended. It's a keeper, for sure.
