Book Description

In this panoramic tour of America's military past, acclaimed artist Don Troiani once again turns his brush to the wars of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing on the storied battles of those conflicts. From the French and Indian War through the Civil War, Troiani brings his flair for painstaking detail and high drama to such famous battle scenes as Bushy Run, Bunker Hill, Cowpens, Burnside's Bridge at Antietam, Little Round Top at Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. Narratives by leading military historians accompany the paintings and provide background stories that are as exciting as they are informative. For many of the pieces, Troiani has written insightful and often humorous commentary on the joys, surprises, and challenges of the creative process, offering a rare glimpse of the artist at work. Don Troiani's American Battles is his most unique work to date, a must-have for newcomers and old fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars Don Troiani's "American Battles".......2006-11-11

For anyone even vaguely interested in American history, Don Troiani's paintings are a wonderful revelation, bringing the past to life. I already own "Don Toiani's Civil War", "Soldiers in America" and "Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War", all of which are meticulously investigated and reserched. Troiani's huge achievement is that he is able to combine accurate detail with a marvelous, almost supernatural, empathy with his subjects. His paintings really do bring history to life. The figures flow naturally and inhabited an environment filled with tangible space and light. No stiff and rigid historical painting here. This latest offering combines previously published paintings, found in the others of his books, with newer ones. They cover battles that took place on the American continent from the first colonies in Massachusetts, to the last days of the American Civil War. What is different to his previous books is the addition of much more background information about the artist himself and his methods of working. I would thoroughly recommend this beautifully illustrated book to all lovers of American history and narrative painting. For the military historian and those with an interest in military dress and the soldier's life, it is a 'must have'.

5 out of 5 stars Great........2006-10-31

I recently became interested in Don Troiani's works after purchasing a Civil War Print (The Eagle of the Eighth) at an auction. It was great and after doing a little research found that Don Troiani is one of the best. I recently took a trip to Gettysburg (actually as part of the result of this purchase)and was amazed at what I saw. This is my first purchase of one of his books, but it won't be my last. I'm not an art critic, but I would highly urge anyone interested in the Civil War to purchase one of Mr.Troiani's books or works, they're great.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Book for Troiani Fans and Militaria Collectors!.......2006-09-05

OK, I am admittedly a huge fan of Don Troiani's amazing artwork and own several of his art prints and all of his prior books. Even then, however, I initially questioned the purchase of his latest book on American battles. Wow ..... am I ever glad I went ahead with the purchase! This new book is intended as a "best of" his artwork and places my favorite Troiani paintings in one single reference volume. If you are a new Troiani fan, or new to the history field, the book is also quite a value considering the huge amount of artwork contained inside.

I was first drawn to Troiani's paintings years ago because of the historical authenticity depicted in each painting. The accouterment for each figure is precise and I found myself even referring to the paintings as a reference source for my militaria collecting. An added benefit of the book is that for the first time Troiani reveals how the paintings were created and explains the unique techniques he employs to achieve an unparalleled level of authenticity. The insider's account of the complexities involved in recreating these scenes makes me appreciate his artwork even more!

Troiani is going to have to work quite hard to top this book which is now proudly displayed on my coffee table to impress guests!

5 out of 5 stars From the mind of the artist.......2006-08-24

Having admired the artwork of Mr. Troiani throughout the years, I've come to recognize certain aspects in each piece. This new book delves into the mindset he had as the research was complete, but the image from his mind had to be put into motion then to canvas. Seeing the photos of modeling sessions and rough sketches expands the experience so much more than just taking in the image. He not only paints a scene with his brush but also with his words when decribing finding the right looking model, tree, field, gun and clothing. What I especially like is finding out who some of the models have been, from the sculptor Ron Tunison to noted collectors of Civil War items. Anyone can be envious of his artistic talent, but when it comes to authenticy, research and pains-taking accuracy no one can compare to Mr. Troiani and this he shares in this wonderful compilation!
* I look forward to his next book in 2007 *

2 out of 5 stars Most of the same...almost.......2006-08-23

As much as I admire the artwork and historical research that goes into Troiani's paintings I'm very disappointed with Don Troiani's latest book AMERICAN BATTLES, The art of the nation at war,1754-1865. The best part of the book is the inclusion of some new Revolutionary War and Civil War paintings and figure studies. I wish Troiani's earlier books would have contained an Artist's Comments section as well as photos of his models and some in progress work. If this had been the case there would have been very little that was "fresh" in this volume. In addition to text for the battle paintings there normally is text for the single figure studies as well as the artifacts from Troian's collection. This time around the figure studies and artifacts are merely "filler" without any descriptive text. I found the title AMERICAN BATTLES a little misleading. The period of 1784-1859 is covered in a mere 7 pages with only one painting really having any text aside from a title.Though I own all of the books featuring Mr. Troiani's work, one can only enjoy a repackaged product for so long. I'd prefer a 4-5 year period between books in order to get a product that contains newer rather than older works. The 2 star rating may be a bit harsh, but there's just not enough to get excited about here.~Gary

Book Description

"Of more than one thousand battles fought during the war," William C. Davis notes, "a few have risen to lasting fascination and prominence, some even regarded as 'turning points.' The battles included in this book are those that caused the greatest casualties, produced the greatest feats of heroism, and won or lost major campaigns. They decided the course of the war in the East and the West, set the standard for valor and sacrifice, defined who the American soldier was to be in this war and in the future, and established the American military tradition."

This volume presents accounts of five Confederate victories (Fort Sumter, First Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chickamauga, and Franklin), five Union victories (New Orleans, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Nashville), and three stalemates (Monitor v. Virginia, Antietam, and Charleston). Also included are chapters on solder life, the steadfast Iron Brigade, and the first volunteer African-American combat troops recruited in the North-the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Infantry. From the first shot in Charleston Harbor to the one-day decimation of the Southern army on the outskirts of Nashville, these pages are colored with the wide range of expectation and disappointment that frustrated the country during four years of war.

5 out of 5 stars A great history lesson.......2003-02-15

This work is so easy to review. It was an absolutely wondeful read. I think it would be difficult for anyone else to compile so much information in such an 'easy to read' format. This book lives up to the expectations you would have after reading "The Leaders." and "The Legacies," the other two books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect reference book that I would recommend to anyone........1999-03-04

A really good book even if your not really a history buff. The book touches on many different things not just the battles, such things as the foot soldier's life, the Iron Brigade, Gettysburg: the civilians. The book however still talks about many important and significant battles of the war like, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, First Manassas, and Fort Sumpter. Every topic you read about will only be about 25 pages long but it is still indepth enough to give you as much information as you could want out of the topic your reading about. I personally enjoyed reading this book, and even if your not big into the Civil War their are plenty of interesting stories and pictures that will keep your interest in reading. You can hardly go wrong reading this because their are 17 different topics so if you don't like one you can go to the next. This is a great book and it fits in with the two others that complete the series. The History Channel and William C. Davis out do themselves again.

Although he has been painting the War Between the States since 1980, Don Troiani's Civil War is the first book to collect this historical artist's work in one volume. Troiani is at his best in the battle paintings--his attention to detail and insistence on historical accuracy help him capture the valor and confusion of combat--but the book includes more bucolic depictions of camp life, as well. Brian Pohanka's accompanying text illuminates the stories behind the paintings. For example, he describes a famous episode from Second Manassas where Confederate soldiers ran out of bullets during a Union assault; the beleaguered Rebels resorted to throwing rocks at the Union lines. Troiani captures this desperate action magnificently. Because the narrative focuses on these small stories, it sometimes misses the big picture; so while the text and paintings are presented in chronological order from 1861 to 1865, it makes for only a so-so recounting of the war overall. But this is not a book you read so much as experience. --Thomas Prowell

5 out of 5 stars Troiani, Pohanka Combine To Bring Character's Alive.......2007-01-10

What a nice book, both to the artistic and literary eye. I am fortunate enough to own three Don Troiani signed Civil War prints. This book is dessert, providing a thorough if not complete collection of all the Civil War art I will never own but can now enjoy. Troiani, an avid collector of Civil War uniforms and gear, provides perhaps the most accurate representation of soldiers, regiments and engagements normally limited to what the mind's eye can conjur from words on a page. Troiani not only excells at the equipment's detail, but paints a vivid image of the topography and climate as well as the determination, anguish, fear, and heroism of the soldiers. These are not charactures but the images of people who seem to walk off the page and out of your imagination. Pohanka's commentary complements the art by placing the action within the broader context of the battle and the war. I made this book a gift to myself and, if you appreciate art - either in a historical context or for arts sake - you should as well.

5 out of 5 stars The American Civil War revealed.......2006-06-28

If you are any kind of amateur Civil War historian than you probably grew up looking at the American Heritage or Golden books about the civil war. They were chock full of illustrations from the Harper's Weekly sketches to the bursting with color lithographs of Kurtz & Allison. Yes, these images were full of fully uniformed boys in blue and gray gathered in massive lines firing point blank at each other. And even as a child gazing at these...you wondered...was it really like that?

Then you glimpse your first Troiani painting and you know you are in the presence of the real deal. Don Troiani sweats the details and doesn't just throw something on the canvas and attach a name to it. The event depicted is so vividly and realistically portrayed that you almost know what moment in the American Civil War you are seeing without having to be told.

This wonderful book finally brings together in one place some of Troiani's greatest Civil War paintings. It is a book that no Civil War library is complete without. This is perhaps as close to witnessing the actual event as we are ever likely to achieve.

I only wish the Ken Burns had taken advantage of these paintings and used them in his series on the Civil War. His insistence on utilizing contemporary images reduced his otherwise wonderful documentary to a rehash of what I had already seen a thousand times in my Golden book. Imagine how much richer the story telling as his camera zoomed into a Troiani painting.

It's time to see the Civil War as it was. Trust Don Troiani to show you.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2006-03-16

Every Civil War enthusiast should have this book. It's beautiful, enjoyable, as well as educational. Troiani's attention to detail and historical accuracy is astounding. Most of Troiani's work is of active battle scenes with anonomous characters, unlike John Paul Strain's work which focuses on specific leaders in non-battle situations. I recommend both books.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have book.......2001-02-03

A quick glance of the customer reviews tells one that this book is something special. Page after page of astounding paintings complemented by capable text. The detail of Don Troiani's artwork is such that you can literally spend hours examining them, and if you let others look at the book you can grow impatient trying to get it back!

5 out of 5 stars A classic in Civil War Literature.......2000-11-22

This Book is not only regiments history and a lott of beautiful accurate illustrated uniforms, is history alive. The only thing this book lack off is sound but thanks to the hands of Don Troiani the paintings are so full of live you can hear it in the back of your mind. Art by Don Troiani, text by Brian C. Pohanka. This book presents in a beautiful landscape format his unique view of the war and the men who fought it. Each painting is accompanied by an extensive background text by noted historian Brian Pohanka The good thing about this book is that if you consider yourself a Civil War historian or reenactorss a just a fan beginning to study the civil war, you won't find the typical error of other authors, this would help you enjoy the painting one by one so you can understand better who and how was this War fought. One last thing DO NOT PUT THIS BOOK ON YOUR COFFEE TABLE people fall in love with this book so fast that they can even stole from you, believe me this is the third time I buy this book. If you enjoy this book you would love Don Troiani's Soldiers In America, 1754 - 1865.

    Book Description

In the world of historical painting, Don Troiani stands alone, universally acclaimed for the accuracy, drama, and detail of his depictions of America's past. In Don Troiani's Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War, first released in 2002, the artist turned his brush to the units and uniforms of the War between the States. Through Troiani's careful reconstructions and the accompanying text, the book offers one of the most comprehensive looks at Civil War uniforms ever undertaken. In addition to the full volume in hard cover, Stackpole Books now presents four handsome, individually bound paperbacks, each covering different branches of service and types of soldier. Both the cavalry and the artillery played critical roles in the Civil War. The uniforms of horsemen and cannoneers resembled those of the infantry but differed in key respects, such as the bright yellow trim that distinguished the cavalry and the crossed-cannon insignia of the artillery. The artwork in this volume gives a flavor of how these specialized troops were outfitted.

The outcome of nearly every major battle of the war depended on infantry, the foot soldiers in blue and gray who wielded the muskets and sabers. Although some standardization existed, soldiers often modified their uniforms to meet battlefield necessity or to express unit pride, such as the Pennsylvania regiment known by the bucktails troops wore in their hats. The photographs in this volume indicate what infantrymen wore and carried, and Troiani's paintings bring the men and their deeds to vivid life.

Rather than look at the leaders or battles, as previous volumes of Civil War Journal have done, this third and final volume considers the impact of the war on American culture and society. It is a wide-ranging survey, encompassing considerations of everything from the end of slavery to the creation of Arlington National Cemetery, from Matthew Brady's photojournalism to innovations in combat medicine. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, and quotations from various commentators in the History Channel's Civil War Journal series are incorporated seamlessly into the text.

      Book Description

"In many arenas, the Civil War changed things both in military and civilian life," William C. Davis observes. "The roles in society of women and minorities were altered drastically. Advancements in medicine and technology exerted a profound impact on the future. Industry burgeoned. The reporting of news entered the modern era with the photograph. Culture changed as the complexion of Americans evolved and as war's wounds imposed lasting divisions upon our society. It ensured at once that future wars would be more terrible, and yet we would be equipped to cope with that terror to come. These are the legacies of the war covered in this volume."

Civil War Journal: The Legacies is the third volume of a three-volume treatment of the Civil War developed from the popular History Channel series Civil War Journal. Drawing on personal letters, diaries, and newspaper reports, these volumes focus on seldom-told stories of people, places, and events that bring to life the heroic intensity of the Civil War. They portray the human side of the conflict that is frequently overlooked in recounting troop movements and engagements.

This is an excellent read. This book takes you to places and things that you may not have read much about. Any serious Civil War reader needs this in his library.

3 out of 5 stars Text excellent but illustrations not as good as others.......1999-04-21

I found the text well written and learned a lot that I had only guessed about previously--and was way off base. Several chapters deviate from the broadcast episodes, but they seem to benefit in doing so. (A few of these topics were never even broadcast by A&E and I haven't seen them on the History Channel either.) Some of the photos I had not seen before, and the Confederate flags on pages 340 and 341 (but did we need the lyrics to the "Bonnie Blue Flag"?) and the African-American regimentals on pages 346 and 347 are very special. My pet peeve about this book and its companion volumes is that some of the interesting photos are reproduced too small to appreciate. Others are too big. In this book, much more than the other two, the pages look like they've been thrown together carelessly. Ovals are thoughtlessly reproduced in rectangular boxes when they should have been reproduced as ovals. Some things are silhouetted beautifully, but a few that should have been handled that way are just pitched onto the page. Somebody needs a lesson in perspective. In general, this book looks "sloppy" compared to the first two in this series. In too many chapters these illustrations jump around as if no one knew what to do with them. For instance, in the Alexander Gardner chapter, the text just stops for a bunch of photos and then resumes with nothing to indicate what's going on. And the artillery and prison camp chapters look like alphabet soup. Apart from the illustrations themselves, in way too many instances the captions just repeat the text whereas most of the descriptions in the other two volumes had some neat information not in the text. I recommend the book for the text anyway--don't judge it by the weird arrangement of the photos and the mundane captions.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference to the behind the scenes Civil War.......1999-03-04

A very interesting reference book, however I would not recomend it to the reader who is more interested in the battles or leaders in the war. The book touched on a lower level not often heard about the Civil War, such as women in the war, slaves, trains in the war, and photogriphers in the war. I for one am not to interested in these topics but still found the book very readable. It is a fine conclusion to the other two books in the History Channels three volume set.

      Book Description

In the world of historical painting, Don Troiani stands alone, universally acclaimed for the accuracy, drama, and sensitivity of his depictions of America's past. His Civil War paintings and limited edition prints hang in the finest collections in the country and are noted by collectors from around the world. Now, in Don Troiani's Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War, the artist turns his brush to one of the most colorful and captivating aspects of Civil War history: the individual units that earned their reputations on the battlefield and the distinctive uniforms they wore. In addition to 130 paintings of battle scenes and individual figures, the book also includes more than 250 full-color photographs of the uniforms the soldiers wore and the accouterments they carried. Supporting the illustrations is text by two of the leading military artifact experts. Taken together, it makes for one of the most comprehensive books on Civil War uniforms ever undertaken.

5 out of 5 stars Troiani's artwork puts you in the middle of the action.......2004-08-13

His stunning artwork has long been respected, but this work is an invaluable resource for reenactors and students of the period. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a terrific time-sink!.......2003-10-23

Because I'm a working historian with a strong interest in material culture and artifacts, combined with a tourist's interest in Civil War battlefields, I've long been a fan of Troiani's amazingly detailed, extremely accurate, almost photographic art. This gorgeous volume combines large-scale reproductions of 130 of his paintings with some 250 color photos of surviving uniforms and equipment from museums and collections around the country (including Troiani's own). After a couple hours of page-turning, I went back and spent much more time studying the depictions of units of special interest to me, such as the Washington Artillery of New Orleans and Terry's Texas Rangers. The variety in uniforms and insignia is staggering, especially compared to the "uniformity" of modern military uniforms. As usual, he includes extensive technical notes and specs, as well as an annotated guide to artifact collections. It's not a cheap book, but it's worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Finest military artist ever........2003-06-29

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of the Civil War. I do not regulary buy books dealing with it. My primary interest is in the Napoleonic period and I have numerous books on this subject. My prime area of interest are Napoleonic uniforms. However, Don Troiani is such a fine and skillful artist that I have bought his books soley because the fine work he does in portraying the soldiers of the Civil War era. Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War is a supurb work showing the detail and grit of the average soldier in that horrific conflict. There are dozens of paintings or maybe better described as portraits of individual soldiers covering the numerous regiments that took part in the conflict including infantry, cavalry and artillery. Also included in this book are a number of reproductions of his battle paintings which are also the best military paintings I have ever seen. Over the past 20 years I have bought hundreds of history books but only 5 on the Civil War and four of them I bought were simply for the Don Troiani reproductions. He is in my opinion the greatest military artist. Seeing his work makes me jealous for Civil War buffs and I wish that Troiani would paint uniforms of the Napoleonic era. No Napoleonic artist comes close to the detail, accuracy and skill that Mr. Troiani displays in his work. If you are into uniforms or military art of any period then buy this book. You do not have to be a Civil War buff to enjoy the great artwok of Don Troiani.

5 out of 5 stars Latest volume in the "Troiani Triology" is the best one yet........2003-01-06

If you enjoyed "Don Troiani's Civil War" and "Soldiers in America" you'll love the new "Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War." What becomes more clear with each book is the incredible amount of research that goes into Mr. Troiani's work.
This latest book is a perfect combination of text, photography and art.
Noted Civil War authorities Earl Coates and Michael McAfee provide the in depth research text that reads like a novel. The photos of uniforms, headgear, buttons, et al show the extensiveness of resources (most from his personal collection) available to Troiani. Based on these two pillars of knowledge, Troiani creates art of Civil War soldiers in uniform that is unparallelled in accuracy as well as anatomy and action.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for Civil War Buffs.......2002-12-09

Don Troiani has done it again. Fantastic book! Knowing the quality of Troiani's work, I'd had it pre-ordered for some time, and am thrilled to now have it in hand.

Many illustrations are of individual soldiers - allowing for a precise look at the uniform fit, colors and textures as well as how the accessories and accoutrements were worn. The book's illustrations are fantastic and it also has 250+ photographs of uniforms and equipment - many items are from the artist's personal, extensive collection. There is extensive coverage of Zouaves and Chasseurs.

If you've never seen a fully uniformed and armed soldier from the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry, 1st U.S. Hussars 1864-65, a quick purusal will explain why they were nicknamed The Butterflies.

After hearing Mr. Troiani speak in the summer of 2001 (and getting to briefly meet him), he has become my favorite Civil War artist by far. His soldiers are real - sometimes muddy, bloody and torn, and faces may have several days growth of beard, with their emotions and fatigue clearly visible. Hair and facial hair styles are accurate, as are body sizes and types, and all small details. Gaze deeply into one of his paintings, and soon you'll swear you can hear the noise of battle and feel the fear, confusion, determination and courage of the soldiers. Troiani takes you there.

The text, written by Earl Coates, Michael McAfee and Don Troiani, is accurate, concise and thoroughly expands one's understanding of the illustrations.

Extensive sources are given, as are recommendations for museums (and their websites) with extensive collections of Civil War uniforms. Don't let the price throw you, the book is well worth it.

State militias were among the first troops to respond to the outbreak of the Civil War. Those who answered the call to arms represented a cross-section of the country, both North and South, and the uniforms of these volunteers reflected their home regions and, in many cases, national origins. In these photographs and paintings, Troiani conveys the rich diversity of Civil War militia and captures the uniqueness of their garb and gear.

Perhaps the most famous--and certainly the most exotic--uniforms of the Civil War belonged to the Zouaves, troops of French derivation whose vibrant attire was accented by fezzes and baggy trousers. These soldiers cut a flashy figure, and Troiani depicts them in all their colorful glory. This volume also covers the uniforms of engineers, surgeons, marines, and generals.

          5 out of 5 stars Crazy Ray's Review.......2002-11-05

What an excellent read. "The Leaders" is just another addition to this wonderful trilogy (The Legacies, The Leaders, The Battles) Try to read these three great books. "The Leaders" offers refreshing insights into many great characters of the period.

5 out of 5 stars A perfectly edited Biographical Anthology.......2000-05-07

As a Civil War buff, I was pleasantly surprised at how much depth is covered in these short, biographical chapters. I know quite a bit about many of the leaders included in the volume and I did not find any glaring errors or oversimplifications. Each chapter has a team of writers and the editors did an excellent job of melding their contributions into a coherent, readible finished product. In short chapters, the writers and editors did a remarkable job in capturing the characters of their subjects. Furthermore, the book casts judgment on the success of characters such as Jefferson Davis and Georgwe McClellan. I like the fact that it takes a position and, in my opinion, these positions are fairly arrived at. For example, the editors unequivocally declare McClellan to be a failure. In a short chapter, they support their conclusions well. Indeed, they did a great job in seeking the answers to what made McClellan tick. The writing is lucid, the illustrations and captions are illuminating and the conclusions drawn are interesting. I enjoyed this book wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive view of the major figures in the War........1999-02-21

This book is an excellent resource for both the amateur and professional Civil War historian. This book provides the key facts with some insight into the lives of some of the main figures of the American Civil War. As a professional Civil War Historian it can be admitted at times that there are certain things that we all forget and this book makes it a lot easier to refer to than trying to page through a 1000 page biography. This book is a very good refresher and is extremely easy to read and understand. I also like the choice of photogrpahs that are used throughout the book. These are some of the more famous photographs taken and in this sense it provides a good introduction for the amateur Civil War Historian. I recommend this book as a must for any Civil War library. This along with the other two books in the series are a must for every Civil War Historian regardless to the degree of study of that individual.

3 out of 5 stars Easy reading and interesting facts.......1999-01-03

This book, although full of intersting facts, is very easy to read. It is a general overview of the more popular and historic figures of the civil war. Although this book is fairly well informed, it falls short on some of the backgrounds of the war leaders. The main focus of the book is the time that they spend in the war, there is maybe 2-4 pages in life prior and after the war. This is a good book for a collection and I would recommend it to those who have a new found interest in the civil war. This book is not the cornerstone of anyones collection, but a good reference tool and outline of the main leaders of the civil war.
