    Book Description

Frequently scorned and reviled, intellectuals have nevertheless played a vital part in shaping our century. They have done this by performing a variety of roles and responding to the diverse national contexts in which they have operated.

Intellectuals in Politics assess the significance of intellectuals in shaping the political landscape. An introductory essay detailing the major issues confronting intellectuals is followed by four sections examining different aspects of the intellectual's role. The first section looks at philosophers and academics who have tried to define the role of the intellectual. The second includes essays on Israel, Algeria, Britain and Ireland and explores how the intellectual assumes the statues of conscience of a nation and the voice of the oppressed. The third section examines the interaction among intellectuals and Marxism especially in Eastern Europe. The final section assesses the place of the intellectuals and their quest for autonomy in American society.

As the epilogue illustrates, the central question raised by this book is: "In whose name and with what authority does the intellectual speak."

This is a delightful love story about a short stop and his second baseman, the only fault of which is...the ending is SO happy. Excuse me, but there will be a black man (and probably a white woman as well) in the White House before Major League Baseball accepts homosexuiality among its own. Lefcourt, writing in 1992, thought, well, maybe if I set the story in 1998 (which he does!)-maybe...it could happen then. Well, it's 2006, and it hasn't happened yet. Give it another 30 years. MLB..er, SUCKS!

      5 out of 5 stars It's going to happen.......2006-03-25

I've read this book a couple of times and have recently repurchased another copy for my collection. I have always loved this book and hope that others will see the comedy affair that this book offers. Blonde hair, blue eyed with the blonde wife, the best job around and comes to find out he loves his 2nd baseman.

      5 out of 5 stars Sweet, wide-eyed love + consequences.......2005-09-07

I have read this book three times. It works so well because it realistically portrays the anguish of a "man with everything" having to risk it all to finally acknowledge his homosexuality to himself. All-American baseball star Randy Dreyfus does NOT appear callous or malicious in finally leaving his wife and acknowledging his love of teammate D.J. Pickett. Rather, the story expertly uses the metaphors of baseball, stardom and fan-response to explore the compelling nature of real love and the real-life consequences of bigotry. Add funny and you've got a book worth reading. No graphic sex scenes (however you feel about that.)

      4 out of 5 stars A Glove Story.......2005-04-03

The last manuscript I sent to my publisher was a story about a lesbian pro golfer who while on the men's tour falls in love with her biggest rival. He laughed at me saying the public would never buy it. Something like that would never happen in a million years, he informed me. And yet stories like this one get published. It reads like the typical homosexual-fantasy tripe. A straight man falls for a gay man. Aren't there enough of these sci-fi stories on IFC(Independent Film Channel). After showering with the same sex for twenty years, the main character suddenly decides he likes whangs. This is the only explanation the author gives for the change in sexual preference. Sorry but human sexual behavior is not that simple. Was there some childhood trauma? The author simply ignores the psychological aspects of sexual preference. Regardless, the story was enjoyable with plenty of oddball characters coming in and out of the story. But the one I thought that underdeveloped was D.J. Why was he attractive to Dreyfus? Was it just his whang and taut buttocks or something else? How did D.J. keep his preference secret and how was it living with this secret. Why did he accept Randy's proposal without a second thought? These are questions I wish the author would have tackled. Anyway I was surprised by the accurateness of the baseball parts of the story. The author does know baseball but not human behavior.

      5 out of 5 stars at least a triple..........2004-09-18

This is a fun, sweet, enjoyable book. I have re-read it several times and always enjoy it. And I will never feel the same in a fitting room again...

          Book Description

On October 15, 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish artillery captain attached to the French General Staff, was arrested on charges of having betrayed his country by selling military secrets to the Germans. He was convicted of treason by military court-martial and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island, but over the next 12 years a small group of human rights supporters was able to clear him and identify the real traitor, and Dreyfus was pardoned. The most sensational case in French history, it pitted national security interests against individual rights, exposed the anti-Semitism that permeated France, and influenced the course of Europe as it rumbled toward the first of two world wars. This work provides the first comprehensive examination of this incident for students, including a narrative historical overview, essays on major aspects of the event, lengthy biographical profiles of the key players, the text of important primary documents contemporary to the time, a timeline of the event and list of French Presidents and Ministers of War during the Affair, a glossary of terms, and a bibliography of print and electronic sources and films suitable for students. This is an ideal resource for student use. Leslie Derfler, the foremost American authority on the Dreyfus Affair, puts the Affair in historical and social context for the reader. In addition to an historical overview, other essays examine the French political context before Dreyfus, the issue of anti-Semitism in the Affair, the Socialists' position, and how historical perceptions of the Dreyfus Affair have shifted over the last hundred years. Lengthy biographies of key players enrich the reader's understanding of the role of the protagonists and antagonists in the Affair. A wide range of primary source documents, from Alfred Dreyfus's diary descriptions of the torment he suffered on Devil's Island to Emile Zola's famous "J'accuse!" letter accusing the Army high command and the French government of conspiring to hide the truth and protect the guilty party, bring to life the emotional content of the Affair. A selection of rare photographs and newspaper illustrations and cartoons provides a valuable visual component.

          Book Description

The Dreyfus affair — the infamous account of Jewish army officer and French citizen, Alfred Dreyfus, unjustly convicted of treason in 1894 — was the most significant political and social crisis of fin-de-siècle Europe. In the first book designed to introduce students to the broad outlines and significant legacies of the affair, the author deftly interweaves text with documents, tracing the course of events. He highlights the many issues connected with the case, including anti-Semitism, militant nationalism, socialism, the birth of modern Zionism, and the separation of church and state. Sixty-six documents are embedded in the narrative, offering students a broad range of sources to examine, including newspaper editorials, letters, trial testimony, and diary entries. A list of the principal characters is included in the appendices.

I read this book for a class on 19th century Europe. Burns has done a wonderful job of providing documentation showing both sides of the affair. I wish all historical events were analyzed and documented so completely. After reading this book I have a greater understanding of what led to the court martial of Alfred Dreyfus, the turmoil following his conviction, and the societal changes that continued to evolve through the first half of the 20th century. Great book!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent account, flawed delivery.......2005-01-29

I agree with all the other reviews- this is certainly a comprehensive account, sympathetic, etc. There are 2 things I feel make it more difficult than necessary to really sink one's teeth into this account. First, too many people who are listed as having taken public stands are merely names. One really has to know a lot about the history of France in this period to put these people in their perspectives. Second, which is related to the first, is the absence of a real historical perspective in terms of what else was going on at the time in France, in Europe, or elsewhere. So while we get a LOT of detail about the Affair itself, and background information on Dreyfus, Alsace-Lorraine, French anti-Semitism, and relations with Germany, the chapters dealing with the impact on French public opinion lose some of their impact because the Affair dominates to the point of almost excluding all else.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a defining event in modern French history.......2003-08-29

At least for the foreseeable future, this superb account of the Dreyfus Affair by Jean-Denis, which appeared first in French in 1983, will almost certainly stand as the best account of what is unquestionably one of the seminal events in France since the French Revolution. Bredin does a masterful job of assembling all the primary facts of the Affair, introducing and describing all the major actors, and analyzing both the situation that made the Affair possible in the first place and the effects it had on France as a whole. If in the end the account lacks the small degree of passion and moral vision that could have rendered it a masterpiece of historical writing, the dispassion and deliberateness that he employs in his narrative are perhaps appropriate to a tale full of too much passion and too much irrational activity.

One of the most striking features of Bredin's history is the amazingly small role that Captain Alfred Dreyfus himself played in the Affair. Not only did he not engage in the activities that caused his being tried for treason to begin with, he was not a major actor in the events that unfurled in the four years following his conviction. Dreyfus, in fact, was almost completely unaware of the Dreyfus Affair as it raged in France, dividing the nation and almost provoking a Civil War and inspiring a military coup d'etat. For most of those in the military who soon realized that Major Walsin-Esterhazy and not Dreyfus was the person engaged in espionage, and that therefore Dreyfus was innocent, Dreyfus's sufferings were utterly unimportant compared to the honor of the Army. Dreyfus the person dropped out, and Dreyfus the innocent victim became a potentially more dangerous threat to the Army than Dreyfus the supposed spy would have been (or Esterhazy the actual spy was). Ironically, after Zola's famous J'Accuse was published and the Affair gripped all of France, Dreyfus again was forgotten as a person. He became, instead, a symbol that the opponents of the Army and the Church could use as a weapon to attack those entrenched institutions. Indeed, when those who were more concerned with Dreyfus the individual rather than Dreyfus the cause, such as his brother Mathieu and his attorney Edgar Demange, undertook actions that were more beneficial to the individual than the cause, they were roundly criticized. Both sides seemed willing to make Dreyfus a martyr.

The most painful parts of the book are those that reveal the depth and irrationality of the anti-Semitism of the supporters of the Army and the willingness of the Church and masses to espouse the most paranoid fantasies about the Jews during the Affair. No individual supported Dreyfus's cause on the merits of the case in these person's minds, but only because the Jewish Syndicate had paid them off. Every piece of evidence either exonerating Dreyfus or incriminating either the Army or anyone else was declaimed to be a Jewish forgery. The Dreyfus Affair becomes in this way almost a prequel of the events that were to transpire on a few decades later in Nazi Germany. During Nazi occupation, France would cooperate with the extermination of its Jews to a greater extent than almost any other occupied country.

The social effects of the Affair in France are incalculable. If there had been a struggle since 1871 between Republicans and Monarchists, there never was one again. France had unquestionably become a Republic for good, and the political power of the entrenched institutions of privilege--the Army, the Church, and the aristocracy--was shattered for good. Never again would "the saber" truly threaten civilian rule. On the negative side, the Affair also unleashed all the latent anti-Semitism that lay dormant or inactive in the French populace. Many writers have noted that Jews enjoyed a higher standing in French society before the Affair than afterwards. Bredin does an excellent job of noting not merely the main facts and events connected with the Affair, but its aftermath.

The book serves also as a cautionary tale. In a time in the United States (where I live) where Civil liberties are under constant threat from the government that is supposed to be their guardian, the story of the ignoring of the rights of an innocent individual and the willingness to elevate the needs of the military and the state, this bit of history has an astounding relevance. As George Santayana famously said, "Those who do not learn from mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them."

4 out of 5 stars ramifications of the affair.......2003-07-24

I found Bredin's book to be most useful while doing a project on the Dreyfus Affair and its impact on the Zionist movement; namely, Herzl's personal experience of the Affair and how he utilised the Dreyfus Affair as the pinnacle of antimsemitism in Europe to propagate Zionism.

Not only does Bredin focus on the logistics of the Affair with intricate details of the main players and day-by-day accounts, but also uses the impact of the Affair on France and on the world to in a sense show what can be learned from the past, which is what history is all about anyway. A considerable amount of pages is devoted to Theodore Herzl who witnessed Dreyfus' military degradation and humiliation; there were excellent quotes that I could use as evidence of historiography and a summary of Bredin's view.

As with any event, there are always ramifications on the individual, the group or the country, which Bredin takes into account thereby widening the scope of the Affair into something of which any reader can take heed.

          5 out of 5 stars A gripping tale.......2003-03-01

Unfortunately, one seldom finds history as engrossing and artfully composed as Jean-Denis Bredin's "The Affair." As an American with scant knowledge of fin-de-siecle France or the proceedings against Alfred Dreyfus, I was surprised just how quickly and completely absorbed I was by this book.

There are several distinct reasons to recommend reading "The Affair." First and foremost, it is an incredible and sobering story. The plot is filled with so much drama, so many eccentric and historically significant characters, bizarre twists of fate and intrigue that by the time you reach the denouement of Dreyfus' acquittal it is nearly impossible to believe that what you are reading actually happened.

Second, even with a century's worth of perspective, there are still many debatable points about the Affair. For instance, it has been often repeated that had Dreyfus not been Dreyfus, he would have been Anti-Dreyfus. Bredin explicitly rejects this thesis, but after reading his book I must respectfully disagree. There is much about the Dreyfus Affair that is alternatively poignant, ironic, and tragic. That Dreyfus was personally imbued with and adhered to the principles and cause of his chief adversaries - namely a devotion to hierarchy and order, an unflinching loyalty to the Army and his superiors, and fervent nationalism - is one of them. Ultimately, whether the traitor was guilty or not was beside the point. During the course of the Affair, the Old Regime and its honored institutions, the Army and the Catholic Church above all, were pitted against the agents of Revolution. The Dreyfus that Bredin describes would never have deserted the cause of the Army and national honor to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the radical leftist elements that made up the Dreyfusard community.

Finally, the Affair also serves as a cautionary tale for modern readers. The themes that dominated late nineteenth century France - the imminent threat of war with a long-time rival, agitated nationalism in the wake of a national tragedy, reactionary xenophobia and racial profiling - are not foreign to early twenty-first century Americans. It is important to remember that the Dreyfus Affair began quite accidentally; it was the mood of the nation that served as the tinderbox that lit the conflagration. There was circumstantial evidence pointing to Dreyfus as the author of a letter written to the German military attaché in Paris. That evidence was further supported by prejudice that expected an Alsatian Jew to be a traitor. When the French General Staff embarked on their mission to fabricate evidence against Dreyfus, it was with the complete conviction that they had the guilty party and merely wanted to ensure that he was appropriately punished. That first legal transgression, which seemed rather innocuous at the time, was the root of the conflict, for in order to save itself from that first indiscretion greater illegalities had to be committed. It is not impossible to envision something like this happening domestically in the United States in the course of the War on Terror. Let us pray it never does.

Few books have as much to offer as "The Affair." It is a truly superlative work.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject there is, IMHO.......2000-03-13

This book is the best, by far, most complete, and most satifying book I ever read on the fantastic and fantastically interesting Dreyfus affair. The book is a most absorbing study, and won my award for "Best Book read by me in 1986" beating out the other 74 books I read that year.

          Book Description

When French authorities accused Jewish Army captain Alfred Dreyfus of espionage in 1894, the resulting anti-Semitic controversy bitterly divided France and its intellectual world. This book is the first complete edition in English of the pivotal contribution of French novelist Emile Zola to the Dreyfus affair. His impassioned writings represent a classic defense of human rights and a searing denunciation of fanaticism and prejudice, as significant today as when they were written.

5 out of 5 stars COMPLETE COLLECTION OF ZOLA'S LETTERS DURING DREYFUS AFFAIR.......2005-03-28

Emile Zola is today the most well known "fighter" in the war to clear Alfred Dreyfus' name in what became known as the Dreyfus Affair in 1890s France. This book compiles Zola's letters (public and not) during this period, with the most famous being J'Accuse, one that earned him a conviction along with stiff fines that eroded his fortune.

Zola is very passionate in Dreyfus' defense, though his passion never leaves behind a devastating logic that made it so difficult to ignore. This is an amazing defense of religious freedom and justice, against prejudice and hatred. Zola manages to weaken, in time, two of the most powerful institution in France at the time: the military and the church. Ten years later the military would no longer play as significant a role in French life, and by 1905 France would pass the law separating Church and State.

After reading the letters, one is filled with Zola's enthusiasm and idealism. Makes one want to go fight injustice and make this a better world. There are very few books about which this can be said.

          Product Description

"After forty years of study on the subject, I can with some confidence say Bill and Carol McGann’s The Story of the Tour de France is the finest such work ever produced in the English language, and perhaps in any."
-From the preface by Owen Mulholland, author of Uphill Battle

"Besides towering over all bicycle races, the Tour de France endures for its unique Gaulic character, like Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. The McGann's passionate and insightful writing evokes the raucous cast of riders, promoters, and journalists thrusting through highs and lows worthy of opera. This volume stands out as a must-read book for anyone seeking to appreciate cycling's race of races."
-Peter Joffre Nye, author of The Six-Day Bicycle Races: America's Jazz Age Sport and Hearts of Lions

"There are LOTS of books on the Tour de France. An increasing number of them are actually written in English. However, of those, none educates Americans about this grand spectacle’s rich past. The Tour de France has a history as fascinating and sordid as Rome’s and it is high time someone undertook to explain this to our American sensibility. Our guide for the trip is a man with a ravenous appetite for both world history and bicycle racing, just the sort of person to paint a Tour champion with the dramatic grandiosity befitting Hannibal himself."
          -Pat Brady, Editor, Asphalt Magazine

At the dawn of the 20th Century, French newspapers used bicycle races as promotions to build readership. Until 1903 these were one-day events. Looking to deliver a coup de grace in a vicious circulation war, Henri Desgrange—editor of the Parisian sports magazine L’Auto—took the suggestion of one of his writers to organize a race that would last several days longer than anything else, like the 6-day races on the track, but on the road.

That’s exactly what happened. For almost 3 weeks the riders in the first Tour de France rode over dirt roads and cobblestones in a grand circumnavigation of France. The race was an electrifying success. Held annually (suspended only during the 2 World Wars), the Tour grew longer and more complex with an ever-changing set of rules, as Desgrange kept tinkering with the Tour, looking for the perfect formula for his race.

Each year a new cast of riders would assemble to contest what has now become the greatest sporting event in the world.

5 out of 5 stars BILL AND CAROL'S LABOUR OF LOVE.......2006-08-07

As soon as I began reading this book on the website I was hooked; as hooked as we all were watching Stephen Roche catch up with Pedro Delgado at the top of La Plagne in stage 21 of the 1987 Tour or Greg LeMond's 8 second Tour victory over Laurent Fignon on the Champs-Elyses in 1989. These Tour memories are but two of many contained within this wonderful read. As I skimmed through the book, page by page, I knew I just had to have it and so I bought it. The book is an absolute treasure chest of all you ever needed to know about the most gruelling, and yet with it the most captivating, bike race in the world. It is such a joy to read because Bill and Carol have obviously completed what must have been a labour of love for them. And if the writing, which is superb, is not worth the purchase price alone then the photographs are breathtaking. I only hope my forthcoming "Tour de France Miscellany" (Carlton Publishing) is as good as "The Story of the Tour de France".

          Book Description

In 1894, French army captain Alfred Dreyfus, an Alsatian Jew, was wrongly accused of passing military secrets to the Germans. The ensuing scandal has often been studied for what it reveals about French anti-Semitism and tensions between republicanism and conservatism under the Third Republic. But because treason was considered a cowardly--and therefore effeminate--act, Dreyfus also embodied, for many, the danger of effeminate men masquerading in military uniform.

In The Dreyfus Affair and the Crisis of French Manhood historian Christopher E. Forth shows how the rhetoric and images used during the Dreyfus Affair reflected French anxieties about masculinity and modernity, and also facilitated ongoing debates about the state of French manhood through the First World War. Forth first considers the broad gender issues that faced the French at the time of the Dreyfus trial. He examines contemporary newspaper accounts as critiques of the masculine credentials of Jewish men and shows how members of the Jewish press answered allegations of their own cowardice and effeminacy. By situating the figure of the "intellectual" within the gender anxieties of the time, he shows how Dreyfus's supporters defensively tried to affirm their masculinity by distancing themselves from "cowardly" Jews, "hysterical" crowds, and threatening women. This book pays special attention to how the Dreyfus Affair engaged with changing ideals of the male body. Taking as a metaphor the portly body of Dreyfus's most prominent defender, novelist Émile Zola, Forth explores how an emerging emphasis on diet and exercise allowed supporters to celebrate Zola's "heroic" weight loss. Finally, he examines the relation of the Dreyfus Affair to the "culture of force" that marked French society during the prewar years, thus accounting for the rise of the youthful athlete as a more compelling manly ideal than the bookish and sedentary intellectual.

3 out of 5 stars an excellent book that will frustrate many.......2004-07-01

Forth examines how gender politics in fin-de-siecle France affected the Dreyfusard Affair and its key actors. This book not only brings up gender matters, but Jewish identity, obesity, intellectualism, the birth rate, among others.

The reader can instantly tell that the author had to read much information in order to come up with his thorough and concise descriptions. I am always frustrated that historians haven't picked up many of the important contributions from cultural studies. This book, however, was a good mix of history, Jewish studies, and gender studies.

This book brings up fascinating phenomena. For example, the author stated that stereotypes of French Jewish men as less manly were so pervasive that to call a Jewish man "unmanly" could automatically be understood as both patriarchal and anti-Semitic. Male Dreyfusards considered themselves the saviors of a female Truth, yet discouraged actual women from being too vocal in support of their cause.

This book will make you think about modern problems. Articles say that anti-Semitism is on the rise in France just as in the 1890s. Modern Americans worry about sedentary, middle-class jobs just as the French did more than a century ago.

Despite being impressed with this book, I know that it will frustrate many. The author freely admits that he does not solve whether Dreyfus committed treason or not and that his focus is upon the undercurrents of the debate. Still, social conditions in France are covered more than the Dreyfus Affair. Dreyfusards are analyzed more so than Dreyfus himself. Non-Jewish thinkers are discussed more than Jewish ones. This book goes into descriptions of physique magazines and urban crowds way afield of the main discussion. Each chapter foreshadows a talk about French author Emile Zola and then in the Zola chapter, the author is only brought up in a few pages. The remoteness of Forth's discussion is going to frustrate many readers. This will only reaffirm ideas that historians shouldn't dabble into gender matters and other sociocultural issues.
