5 out of 5 stars Just one more book in the all-encompassing, enthralling, and utterly absorbing Left Behind Series.......2007-09-13

From the very first letter of the alphabet that my eyes looked upon inside this series of books, until the very last period of the very last sentence, I was hooked. Each one of these books absorbed my attention like no other book has ever done in my life. Biblically sound, theatrically entertaining, and brilliantly written, the Left Behind books will inspire you to dig into God's word and take the pieces of news from your T.V. screen and match them right smack-dab up with the prophecies of the Bible. Your hair will stand up, your heart will race, and you will find yourself helplessly caught in the suspense. Once you finish one of these books, you will desperately race to your computer screen or your local library to pick up the next one!

4 out of 5 stars Kingdom Come - worth reading.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this book. I read the entire series over the past few months, and this was the way to end it. It's more of a bible study than the other books in the series. Not as exciting, but if you read the story up until now, you should read this. Gives a good description of the last days.

1 out of 5 stars Potter is Hotter!.......2007-08-29

As a work of fantasy, the Left Behind series is third-rate. It lacks the humor and exuberance of the Harry Potter books; the magical acts it portrays are quite simply boring. It lacks the sparkling darkness of language that makes the His Dark Materials books a delight to read. It lacks the sweep and grandeur of the Lord of the Rings series. Note please that I'm reviewing Left Behind merely as escapist fantasy literature. As theology, it's too contemptible to need reviewing. As a morality tale, it's even more contemptible, an interminable drone of bigotry, sexism, self-righteousness, and exploitation of the decent folk who congregate in America's churches.

5 out of 5 stars Final Stand.......2007-08-18

The entire series was written in such a way that every new book had its own plot. A series well done. Thank you for the eye opener.

Book Description

The long-awaited final volume of Chalmers Johnson’s bestselling
Blowback trilogy confronts the overreaching of the American empire and the threat it poses to the republic

In his prophetic book Blowback, Chalmers Johnson linked the CIA’s clandestine activities abroad to disaster at home. In The Sorrows of Empire, he explored the ways in which the growth of American militarism and the garrisoning of the planet have jeopardized our stability. Now, in Nemesis, he shows how imperial overstretch is undermining the republic itself, both economically and politically.
Delving into new areas—from plans to militarize outer space to Constitution-breaking presidential activities at home and the devastating corruption of a toothless Congress—Nemesis offers a striking description of the trap into which the dreams of America’s leaders have taken us. Drawing comparisons to empires past, Johnson explores in vivid detail just what the unintended consequences of our dependence on a permanent war economy are likely to be. What does it mean when a nation’s main intelligence organization becomes the president’s secret army? Or when the globe’s sole “hyperpower,” no longer capable of paying for the vaulting ambitions of its leaders, becomes the greatest hyper-debtor of all times?

In his stunning conclusion, Johnson suggests that financial bankruptcy could herald the breakdown of constitutional government in America—a crisis that may ultimately prove to be the only path to a renewed nation.

5 out of 5 stars We have met the enemy and they is us.......2007-10-15

If "Lawless World" by Phillippe Sands was disturbing (see my review) then "Nemesis" is frightening. If Chalmers Johnson has a proven record for political prophecy, then in this instance I hope he is wrong.

In excruciating detail, Johnson reveals the mistakes and hubris of half a century of leadership that has led us to where we are today, a messy war, a trillion dollar national debt, and a crumbling internal infrastructure, sacrificed to an increasingly expensive empire of military bases all over the world.

In two previous books, I read a quote attributed to a White House aide that claimed "we're an empire now, and when we act we create our own reality,......we are history's actors....and you, all of you will be left to study what we do."

"History's actors" comes right out of Hannah Arendt, the political analyst, who places man's activities in the world in three categories; labor, work and action, with action being the public realm or what we call politics.

In his book, Johnson affirms this contention that we are fast becoming an empire with our vast overseas military installations as the outposts of empire. How did we get there? By interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states, undermining democratically elected governments that were "not to our liking" and engaging in covert operations often with disasterous results to the countries involved. We often left chaos and discord as well as poverty in our wake. More often, we established a permanent presence in the form of a military base. Why do they hate us?
The question is why wouldn't they.

Johnson makes a good case for the egregious behavior of the current administration being an almost inevitable result of a series of incompetent administrations, abuse of executive power, and concomitant international and domestic crises and events, many of them provoked by us via the CIA. The CIA has become the "president's private army". This has resulted in what Johnson calls the "imperial presidency".
Imperialism (the practice of acquiring economic and political hegemony over other nations) is incompatible with democracy.

The end result will be the necessity to go the way of the British empire or the Roman one, either gracefully relinquishing our hold as England did after W.W.II, or overreaching and perishing.

To quote Johnson: "All empires it seems, require myths of divine right, racial preeminence, manifest destiny, or a civilizing mission to cover their own barbarous behavior in other people's countries."
One is forced to question just what temerity allows George W. Bush to claim his own brand of divine right. To quote theologian Rheinhold Niebuhr,"the tendency to claim God as our ally for our partisan values is the source of all religious fanaticism." Indeed, one is forced to consider which fundamentalism, Bush's Christian one or the Islamic is the more insidious and pernicious.

5 out of 5 stars Crossing the Rubicon.......2007-09-08

This book answers Michael Moore's question, "Where's my country?" The author's scholarly and carefully reasoned answer is that the constitutional republic we once had has evolved into an empire. Johnson traces the rise of militarism, the hidden and often ill-conceived interventions of the CIA and the devastating "blowback" from them, and the enormous power the United States projects through its hundreds of overseas military bases, as well as our plans to militarize space.

I found that the book explained many events that are extremely puzzling if one continues to believe that the United States is a high-minded democracy, but make perfect sense from the point of view of empire.

Johnson's conlusion, that we are on the cusp of a choice between the path taken by Rome into empire and dictatorship vs. that chosen by Great Britain to dissolve its empire but preserve its democracy, was compelling and sobering.

I would recommend Nemesis to anyone, regardless of political slant, who seriously wants to make sense of the role the United States plays in the world today, and the world's reaction to it.

5 out of 5 stars On the brink of a military dictatorship.......2007-08-12

Chalmers Johnson is deeply pessimistic about the future of the US and its citizens. He sees at the horizon `a collapse of constitutional government, perpetual war, endemic official lying and disinformation and finally bankruptcy. We are at the cusp of losing our democracy for the sake of keeping our empire.'
For him, the heart of the matter is `military Keynesianism' (the US economy is mightily based on weapon manufacturing) and the goal of the military-intelligence community (full spectrum dominance over the world and in space).
But this imperial adventure is far too costly. The US spends more on armed forces than all other nations on earth combined, for more than 737 military bases in more than 130 countries. Also, space weapons are pure waste. A space shield doesn't work, because weapons cannot make a distinction between warheads and free floating space debris. `The neoconservative lobbyists are only interested in the staggering sums required.'
The US enormous military budget (of which 40 % is secret) is not paid by US taxpayers, but by foreign investors in US debt.
In the meantime, democracy is undermined. Chalmers Johnson doesn't see `any president or Congress standing up to the powerful vested interests of the Pentagon, the secret intelligence agencies and the military-industrial complex.' The separation of powers is becoming a dead letter. The legislative and the judicial branches have lost their independence.
The author is extremely hard for the current government, calling members of the Administration `desk-murderers'. For him, `putting the ruler above the law is the very definition of dictatorship.' Its TIA (Total Information Awareness) program `is the perfect US computer version of Gestapo and KGB files.' He is extremely angry with the US media, calling them `Pravda-like mouthpieces of the powerful.'
For him, what Congress really should do is abolish the CIA and remove all purely military functions from the Pentagon.

This hard-hitting book is more than a very solid warning. It is a must read for all those interested in the future of mankind.
For a view from the South, I highly recommend `Dilemmas of Domination' by Walden Bello.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Foreign Policy Reading.......2007-07-28

If you want to read an unvarnished assessment of America's foreign policy by a scholar and former insider this book will more than suffice. Johnson evaluates the military-industrial complex, foreign policy tactics, and the imperialistic tendencies of contemporary America and how they are all contributing to our very real ongoing downfall. Johnson is not afraid to prove how our own covert and overt policies have contributed to the war and terror that plague our nation.

5 out of 5 stars Nemesis by Chalmers Johnson.......2007-07-18

All who are interested in the Bush-inspired quagmire that we are in today should read this to understand the psychology and sociology that historically has led to the end of a society. There are some implications and assumptions that are made to compare past "empires" and some political and economic sections are a bit esoteric, but overall it's quite intriguing. If you think this is for you make sure you read "Blowback" before "Nemesis" which was the first of Johnson's trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars A book for everyone who has a mom.......2007-10-11

This is a TRUE story about a man who has made such a drunken fool of himself on so many occasions that his daughter sends him a wedding announcement - after her wedding. He falls into deep despair, loses all hope and goes on a deliberate journey to end his life. He almost succeeds and when he meets his mother who has died years earlier. She takes him through a sort of time warp where the past and present combine. He learns the truth about his father whom he admired as a boy but he sees that his father was really a polygamist who forced his son to choose between mother/father and then father abandoned them. He finally sees all the struggles his mother went through to raise him and his sister, she cleaned houses to put him through college after getting fired from her job as a nurse because the married women did not want a divorcee around their men. After all him mother did for him, he dropped out at the instigation of his father to go play pro baseball yet he failed at that too. For One More Day is really about the man who gets to meet his mother again for one more day, in the afterlife she shows him how she lived her life. In the epilogue we find that this story is a TRUE story as told to the author by the man who lived it. It made me so grateful to be able to pick up the phone and call my mother now and also realize how deeply I will miss her one day. The author Mitch Albom is better known as a sports writer but don't let that stop you from reading this book, I sent copies to my mother and sister the very next day.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-09-19

This was a nice short story. If you've lost a loved one or have struggled with a past you've tried to overcome, you can relate to the main character.

5 out of 5 stars A good read on many levels.......2007-09-14

For One More Day is a fast read, but it engages the mind and emotions on many levels. It touches the nerve of regrets in a family relationship, and it leaves the reader with an assurance that it's not too late to make amends even after death has staked its claim between you.

Mitch Albom has done an excellent job of moving the story along while leaving room for a last moment surprise. I'll go back and read this one again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-09

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE best book on trading I have ever read........2007-09-09

I had to get this book after reading such a mix of reviews. I was really curious how it would turn out since reviewers were either raving about it or trashing it.

After reading the 1st half of this book I was shocked to say the least. The first half of this book is worth more than all of the books I have read on trading combined. If someone trashes this book then they are either very new to trading and don't understand the points being made in this book(which I can understand because you have to get some experience under your belt to really appreciate what is being said in this book) or they are looking for a quick strategy they can read in 5 minutes and start making money. For one thing, that's never going to happen anyway.

The trading strategies in this book are very basic, so for newbies that part of the book has some good info. I was hoping for a little more advanced analysis of trading techniques, but I really didn't need that anyway. The knowledge and wisdom in the first half of this book is going to take my trading to moon.

For the newbies who didn't like this book, get a couple years experience under your belts then go back to this book and re-read the 1st half. I guarantee you, you will want to come back here and write a positive review.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09

When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.

Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.

In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.

After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).

So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).

Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.

I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".

4 out of 5 stars Seeds of Wisdom!.......2007-05-18

Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.

Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are just learning or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical lagging stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Sorry, there is no Holy Grail on Wallstreet predicting the future for you... better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's history or footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks or are just rookies learning from their mistakes the first 2 years.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all novice trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it sinks in their minds.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27

I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.

and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)

and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"

YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for New Teachers!!.......2007-10-11

I am an Elementary Education major, and my college required me to read this book before beginning my Student Teaching experience. It was recommended to me before that, though, by an acquaintance I met in Kentucky while I was on a trip. She highly promoted it as a must-have, and after reading it I heartily agree with her. There is tons of practical information in this book, and it's convenient as well as easy to use. This is a book that is sure to greatly help new teachers get started!!! Enjoy!! =)

3 out of 5 stars Book is geared for females........2007-10-14

I'm the type of person that likes to do a little research and comparison before I start buy anything. (I have never written on of these reviews before) Being middle aged and looking for some guidance for health and exercise I have been researching various books. I actually was thinking of going to his spa for a week in Santa Monica so I decided to glance through some of his books. In short the first one I looked over was the 6 day body make over. The main focus was on nutrition for a 6 day jolt. I'm not looking for miracles but looking at his philosophy. Looked like the basic weight loss diet. Then I picked up this book...12 day body shaping. My thought was that it would be the same diet type philosophy but with guidance on exercise. Well my phone rang and I just bought the book and ran out of the book store. When I got home I was surprised. The only hint I had that this book was geared to females was that there was a picture if Michael on the cover with a woman. But when I stared reading it was a different story. Examples. When you are told to take pictures of yourself it is recommended that you "wear a bathing suit, preferably a two-piece". Example two. Compare the diets with the 6day book. They break it down between men and women. Men get twice as much food. 4oz. (male) v. 2oz. (female) of meat. All the diet info was only for women if you take the 6day book as being correct. Also it asks if too much fat hanging over my bra. (Seinfeld an the man-bra????) And last but not least the pictures of body types are all the pictures used of women in the 6 day book. Granted there is good information in here for either sex but they should have pointed out in the beginning of the book that THIS IS FOR FEMALES. They should have stressed this on the cover!

I just got the feeling that after glancing over this book that he never even really had a hand in it. Maybe a ghost writer put it together...he jumped in the pictures...and never read the book. Maybe he is more caught up in listening to the handlers (TV and Marketing)then doing what he does best.

5 out of 5 stars Great plan that makes sence and works........2007-09-10

I've like Michael for a while. Watching him on Extreme Makeover his theories seem to be logical and user friendly. The book is well layed out with good illustrations. The diet info is well balanced and nutritionally sound. I'd been on Weight Watchers for 6 months and had lost 50lbs. I still had 10 more to loose so I thought a change would be good. When I weighed in I'd lost 4.6lbs in 2 weeks with this book. This was amazing since I was well past the water lose stage on the game. His workout strategy is intellegent explanning how to create a long lean look instead of creating muscle where I didn't want it. I highly reccomend the book. It's no weight lose miracle just sound logic that will work IF YOU DO IT!

5 out of 5 stars Health Plan.......2007-09-05

This book is more of a health plan than a diet book, so well written with loads of good information

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books on the market.......2007-08-30

Filled with common sense tips on exercise and diet. Was impressed with the acuracy of the descriptions within the body types. Would definitely recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Need a partner for this.......2007-08-20

I was extremely disappointed with this book. I work out all the time and have never had a problem following a program, however, this program requires that you have a partner (which I don't have) to hold the rubber bands for the resistance training. The other suggestion is to put the bands around something??????? Have no idea what I could possibly put the bands around. Needless to say couldn't follow this plan so I couldn't tell you if it works.

Book Description

For would-be entrepreneurs, innovation managers or just anyone fascinated by the special chemistry and drive that created some of the best technology companies in the world, this book offers both wisdom and engaging insights—straight from the source.

— Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, and author of The Long Tail

"All the best things that I did at Apple came from (a) not having money and (b) not having done it before, ever." —Steve Wozniak, Apple

Founders at Work: Stories of Startups' Early Days is a collection of interviews with founders of famous technology companies about what happened in the very earliest days. These people are celebrities now. What was it like when they were just a couple friends with an idea? Founders like Steve Wozniak (Apple), Caterina Fake (Flickr), Mitch Kapor (Lotus), Max Levchin (PayPal), and Sabeer Bhatia (Hotmail) tell you in their own words about their surprising and often very funny discoveries as they learned how to build a company.

Where did they get the ideas that made them rich? How did they convince investors to back them? What went wrong, and how did they recover?

Nearly all technical people have thought of one day starting or working for a startup. For them, this book is the closest you can come to being a fly on the wall at a successful startup, to learn how it's done.

But ultimately these interviews are required reading for anyone who wants to understand business, because startups are business reduced to its essence. The reason their founders become rich is that startups do what businessesdo—create value—more intensively than almost any other part of the economy. How? What are the secrets that make successful startups so insanely productive? Read this book, and let the founders themselves tell you.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great content, awful format.......2007-09-20

There's plenty of great information here, as all the other reviews said. But this interview format is really excruciating to read. Casual speech is very hard to transcribe in such a way that it becomes readable. This is why journalists and other writers are trained in how to reduce a long, tangential speech into something meaningful and clear. These interviews tend to run on and on and on, with the subjects jumping around, sometimes contradicting themselves, or misspeaking; all the stuff we do when talking, but which doesn't really matter in conversation, where other cues like body language make up for it. It really takes a lot of work to read this stuff, you're constantly having to hear the subject "out loud" in your head for it to make sense.

This book's easily twice as long as it could be if these interviews were edited down to a few really useful pages each. Or better: rewritten as short essays.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2007-09-19

Founders at Work is a fairly interesting read but lacks some depth. I'm the founder of a startup at the moment and am always keen to learn more about other founder's stories. The structure of this book is more like an interview with the interviewer rarely delving into the deeper human emotions, problems, issues, feelings etc of the founders. This really gives a basic "guided story" approach about each of the founders without any "pearls of wisdom" or "lessons learned".

Good for a single read or the average person who has an interest in technology startups from a founder's perspective, not worth being made into a hardcover.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as Everyone is Saying...Just Buy It!.......2007-09-16

Loved this book. The interviewer asked a similar set of questions for all participants yet improvised when needed to follow an interesting train of thought to it's natural conclusion. All of the participants were refreshingly candid. Almost as if they were unloading on a therapist. Each interview is just long enough to feel complete but not so long as to feel redundant. On another note, I'm pretty anal when it comes to the physical presentation of a book and this one passes all my criteria: Decent margins, pleasant type face, good line space and font sizes, flexible spine stays open easily without trying to close itself, and easy to browse logical organization. If you're an entrepreneur working on tech start up this is one of the few "must read" books.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the 7 Harry Potter books together.......2007-08-12

Better than the 7 Harry Potter books together (wich is a bad comparison as I didn't like them that much). The book is a collection of interviews with founders of famous technology companies about what happened in the very earliest days and later. Within each interviews, you'll catch dozen of interesting infos. Believe me , when you start it, you'll finish it within the week.

5 out of 5 stars A Mars Bar for your Soul.......2007-08-02

Hey, maybe I'm just an old-fashioned chocaholic but books like this are what I turn to to get a lift.

In the same way a quick snack on a Mars Bar gives me a physical energy boost, I get a spiritual boost from reading about other people's struggles. An author needs a special style to pull off this kind of book and Jessica Livingston deftly steers the reminiscing. Maybe the book is just well-edited but there were many times when I think she asked just the perfect next question to keep the stories flowing.

I wish I'd been in the room.

Book Description

April 15, 1947, marked the most important opening day in baseball history. When Jackie Robinson stepped onto the diamond that afternoon at Ebbets Field, he became the first black man to break into major-league baseball in the twentieth century. World War II had just ended. Democracy had triumphed. Now Americans were beginning to press for justice on the home front -- and Robinson had a chance to lead the way.

He was an unlikely hero. He had little experience in organized baseball. His swing was far from graceful. And he was assigned to play first base, a position he had never tried before that season. But the biggest concern was his temper. Robinson was an angry man who played an aggressive style of ball. In order to succeed he would have to control himself in the face of what promised to be a brutal assault by opponents of integration.

In Opening Day, Jonathan Eig tells the true story behind the national pastime's most sacred myth. Along the way he offers new insights into events of sixty years ago and punctures some familiar legends. Was it true that the St. Louis Cardinals plotted to boycott their first home game against the Brooklyn Dodgers? Was Pee Wee Reese really Robinson's closest ally on the team? Was Dixie Walker his greatest foe? How did Robinson handle the extraordinary stress of being the only black man in baseball and still manage to perform so well on the field? Opening Day is also the story of a team of underdogs that came together against tremendous odds to capture the pennant. Facing the powerful New York Yankees, Robinson and the Dodgers battled to the seventh game in one of the most thrilling World Series competitions of all time.

Drawing on interviews with surviving players, sportswriters, and eyewitnesses, as well as newly discovered material from archives around the country, Jonathan Eig presents a fresh portrait of a ferocious competitor who embodied integration's promise and helped launch the modern civil-rights era. Full of new details and thrilling action, Opening Day brings to life baseball's ultimate story.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging and elegantly written account of Jackie Robinson's groundbreaking rookie season with the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers.......2007-09-08

By the time the middle of the 1940's rolled around Branch Rickey, President of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was already widely acknowledged as one of the smartest, most innovative executives in all of baseball. After all, it had been Rickey who had conceived the notion of a system of minor league farm teams to supply talent to the major league club. In addition, Rickey knew how to evaluate talent like no one else. It got to the point that other general managers did not want to deal with him for fear of getting snookered again. It was sometime around 1944 that Branch Rickey made up his mind that he was going to be the one to integrate Major League Baseball. Always seeking an advantage, Rickey was the first to fully understand that there was a wealth of untapped talent playing in the Negro Leagues. And so it was that before the 1946 season Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was Rickey's plan to bring Robinson along slowing with the hope of Robinson contributing to the big league club in a year or two. After a magnificent season at AAA Montreal in 1946 it was apparent to most observers that Jackie Robinson would likely find himself suiting up for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. "Opening Day" is Jonathan Eig's splendid account of that historic and memorable season. It is a book that will grab your attention immediately and never let go.
I was quite surprised to learn that Jackie Robinson had really not played all that much baseball before signing with the Dodgers. While in college at UCLA Jackie Robinson had run track and been a star football player. He only dabbled in baseball. But Robinson was widely recognized as one of the best all-around athletes in the nation. It was this athleticism that intrigued Branch Rickey. On August 28, 1945 Robinson and Rickey would meet for the very first time. After taking careful measure of the man Rickey was convinced that Jackie Robinson had the proper temperment to endure the difficulties that were sure to arise as major league baseball attempted to integrate its game. After just one year in the minors Branch Rickey deemed Jackie Robinson ready to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. In "Opening Day" Jonathan Eig introduces us to Burt Shotten, the unassuming manager of the 1947 Dodgers and to the men who would be Jackie's teammates. Make no mistake about it. There was a ton of pressure on these men as well. Players like Eddie Stanky, Dixie Walker and Pee Wee Reese really had no idea what to expect in 1947. You will come to understand how the players coped with the drama unfolding all around them. And you see how a team that little was expected of would come together over the course of the long season and make this the most memorable season in the history of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
But of course it is important to understand that "Opening Day" is not just a book about baseball. For this is a story of courage and tenacity.
For one very special season Jackie Robinson took the whole world upon his shoulders. Rickey and Robinson were gambling that if this experiment was successful Major League Baseball would finally see the error of its ways and integrate the game. And it proved to be a risk worth taking. "Opening Day" managed to hold my interest from cover to cover. Jonathan Eig is a wonderful storyteller and I simply could not put this one down. One of the best sports books I have read in a very long time!
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Walking in Jackie's shoes.......2007-08-04

Author Jonathan Eig does an excellent job of putting the reader in Jackie Robinson's shoes for the 1947 season. You get a good sense of what life was like for Robinson, on and off the field. He and his wife Rachael and young son, Jack Jr., shared a small bedroom in the Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment of a woman in a black neighborhood. The living conditions only added to the stress of Robinson's rookie season. Can you imagine any rookie living that way today?

Eig details how teammates and opponents treated Robinson. Many of his teammates were aloof, at best. Many were Southerns who didn't care for him. The role Dixie Walker played in supposedly circulating a petition protesting Robinson's addition to the Dodgers is covered.

Eig recounts each series of the 1947, detailing how opponents treated Robinson, how he performed on the field, and how he had to room with black families when he was on the road. It's interesting to see how some things changed as the season progressed.

This book is essential for any fan who wants to know more about Jackie Robinson and the 1947 season. It will increase whatever admiration you have for Robinson.

5 out of 5 stars The opening day of my memories..........2007-07-18

indeed the book is about baseball, however it is about soooo much more.
From my perspective of someone who was four years old in 1947 Eig's work instantly turned the shadows on my wall of rememberances into a vivid dance of joy.

There was MacArthur, Rickey, Flatbush Ave, stars earning a few bucks more than Ralph Kramden, a guy named Moses who lead NYC to international prominence and forced "them Bums" out of Brooklyn. I can not tell you how much I signed bitter sweet tears of joy through out this Illid.

I had kept this Father's day gift ominously staring at me from my bedside night table for two weeks as I had declared it's purpose in life was to be my companion on a transatlantic trip w/my son to Spain and Italy.

It turned out to be the best traveling companion I ever had so I knew the era forgave me for letting it linger in the brink for those weeks.

I was reminded that in the late forties why my family, sterotypical Italianos, were die hard Yankee fans and why I had to be different. I flashed back to 1949 when I got a Leaf bubble card and opened to see a black face with a mesmerizing smile looking at me and how nonplused I was when I asked my dad who this "Negro" was since living in San Antonio at the time my exposure to there culture was next to nil.

My foggy view of the Korean "conflict" came to light as did all the references to Caro's _The Power Broker_ started to make sense. How social change evolved and the sturm un drang (sp)of the times accelerated the process. This and so much more kept me enchanted across the pond and I was only jarred back to 2007 when we touched down at Frankfurt and I had so kiss my friend farewell, blinked my eyes and uncremoniously place him in my overnight bag all the while thanking him for sixty years of memories brought to life.

5 out of 5 stars a Must read.......2007-06-18

Jackie Robinson was a true Ambassador of the game of Baseball. it's well known about Branch Rickey signing Jackie to the Dodgers and the Historic Impact of Jackie Robinson being the first Black Baseball Player to break the Color Barrier in Major League baseball 60 years ago. Jackie Robinson was also a 4 letter Athlete at the University of UCLA. He was a Gifted Athlete and a Smart Man whose first Season hadn't been fully told until now. this is a Great Book and it answers so much about just how things went down 60 years ago. Jackie Robinson is a true Civil Rights Leader and a Ground-Breaker who paved the way for so many.

5 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "I LOVE JACKIE ROBINSON!".......2007-06-12

I am a born and raised Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodger fan. In fact my family moved from New York to Los Angeles the same year as the Dodgers. Before my brothers and I were born, my parents went to Ebbets field every weekend. I still have a box full of Brooklyn scorecards from those days. I was too young to see Jackie in his prime, but my Dad took me to some games in 1956 and I got to see Jackie and all the "Boys Of Summer"! I was a Brooklyn Dodger fanatic even at that age. Besides watching the Dodgers, I read everything available on them, and still do, 50 years later. I can unabashedly say I love Jackie Robinson. One of my many fond memories of my Dad, was him talking to me in front of our tiny black and white TV watching the Dodgers. He said "I have gone to hundreds of baseball games, and have seen 1,000 players, and the most exciting player I ever saw was Jackie Robinson!" "What Jackie did, was not displayed only in the statistics. Over the history of baseball, many players stole more bases. (Such as Ricky Henderson stealing bases with a 7 run lead in the 8th inning.) But no one unnerved every player on the team just by leading off the base and dancing on his pigeon toes, like Jackie. This book points out little, subtle, beneficial affects, on the whole Dodger team, that the average fan wouldn't see. The pitcher and catcher would be so nervous with Jackie dancing around on the base paths, that they would be afraid to throw curve balls, so the batters got better pitches to hit. Jackie stole home more times, than just about anyone except Ty Cobb. When we moved to Los Angeles there was a program on called the "Million Dollar Theatre", in which they showed the same movie on TV every day for a week. When the "Jackie Robinson Story" was on, I watched it every night, and literally memorized the dialogue. People forget that the Brooklyn Dodgers were the "original America's team". And that was because of Jackie. When Jackie broke the color line, he wasn't only fighting for the blacks, but he also was fighting for the Jews, and every minority that has been suppressed. When I watch old sports shows, when they talk about Jackie, I actually get tears in my eyes, because I know what he went through. I've read just about every meaningful book on Jackie and the Brooklyn Dodgers. I would rate this book as the 2nd best Jackie book of them all. (My personal favorite is "Great Time Coming".)

This book was interesting to me as compared to many others, because it not
only zoomed in on his first year as a player, but also went deeper into
his personal life during that first year. All the way to the size of a little room he and Rachel rented, along with their infant son. If you were to ask me, what, with all my knowledge, I have on Jackie's playing, was the biggest thing I learned from this book, I would say his affect, and dominance, in every facet of the game, that didn't appear in his batting average, in a losing cause as a rookie in the 1947 World Series against the hated and despised Yankees. This is a great book and I recommend it to everyone. P.S. In my opinion Jackie was the greatest all around athlete since Jim Thorpe. A lot of people forget that Jackie was the first 4-sport letterman at UCLA. He was an All American football player, the top scorer on UCLA's basketball team, a record setter in the long jump, and of course baseball, which was actually his weakest sport at that time. Duke Snider tells a story about when Duke was in high school in Compton California, and Jackie was playing for Pasadena City College (A junior college). Duke went to see Jackie play a baseball game. One inning Jackie hit a homerun, and then in his full baseball uniform, with spikes on, ran over to the track field between innings, won the broad jump, and ran back to the baseball field in time to play the next inning!

Book Description

Why is it that our current twenty-first century a.d. is so similar to the twenty-first century B.C.? At a time when religious fanaticism and a clash of civilizations raise the specter of a nuclear Armageddon, many ask: Is history destined to repeat itself? What does the future hold? Will biblical prophecies come true, and if so, when?

Ever since Zecharia Sitchin, in his first trailblazing book The 12th Planet, brought to life the Sumerian civilization and its record of the Annunaki—the extraterrestrials who had come to Earth from their planet Nibiru, fashioned mankind, and gave us civilization and religion—questions have abounded. Are the ancient gods still here, or did they leave? Will they return? What will happen then? Will there be another Deluge or Apocalypse when Nibiru meets Earth? What about “Planet X” and the Mayan 2012? What about Jesus?

In The End of Days, a masterwork that required thirty years of additional research, Sitchin dares to give the answers by presenting compelling new evidence that the Past is the Future—that mankind and its planet Earth are subject to a predetermined cyclical Celestial Time.

Tracing historical events from the messianic fervor and use of nuclear weapons in the twenty-first century B.C., Sitchin resolves ancient enigmas like the Nazca Lines or the origin and significance of the Cross, the Fishes, and the Chalice, places in context the events of the Last Supper and hidden clues like those in Da Vinci's painting, explains the space-related reasons for the everlasting centrality of Jerusalem, and—following in the footsteps of Sir Isaac Newton—deciphers the Time Code in the books of Daniel and Revelation and of the Day of the Lord and the End of Days prophecies.

In this remarkable and relevant conclusion to his bestselling The Earth Chronicles series, Sitchin shatters perceptions and uses history to reveal what is to come at The End of Days.

1 out of 5 stars Awesome FICTIONAL work........2007-09-26

What a great story! From a purely fictional point of view that is. But please don't take Mr. Sitchin seriously. Yes, he's done a lot of work and he's very passionate and I believe HE believes all that's in his books. But if you want facts, follow the work of true scholars.

There are plenty of reviews on this book and even more opinions I'm sure.

What's more important than a review is a call to reason. People - please... Just because you want or need to believe something is true doesn't mean that it is. When dealing with history and languages, I would highly recommend reviewing the work of true and accomplished scholars. Do this and you will likely get complete (as much as is possible) and the most accurate picture of the past as one can.

His credentials in no way qualify him to make such claims. If nothing else, look at his credentials and ask yourself how is this man qualified to make such claims?

I drive a fancy sports car and can give you the exact specs on the engine and body, from top to bottom. I could WOW the best of them with all the tech talk about the engine, transmission, suspension, etc. I could even carry on a detailed conversation with the mechanic if I had to. But I can tell you with certainty that if I was given a shop full of tools all to myself I couldn't fix my fancy sports car if it broke.

If you take your car into the shop be worked on, do you want the guy who talks like he knows what he's doing working on your car or do you want the guy with all the certificates on the wall that's PROVEN he knows what he's doing working on your car?

This is the case with Mr. Sitchin and his books. He talks a good line but has no credentials to prove he's anything more than just a fanciful talker.

Mr. Sitchin graduated from the University of London, majoring in economic history and he was a journalist and editor in Israel. How does this make him an expert in ancient Hebrew and the old Testament? In Sumerian culture? IMHO, this is a classic case of someone learning enough about an ancient language "to be dangerous". He absolutely sounds like he knows what he's talking about and sadly that fools a whole lot of people.

Like many, I was very taken initially with his ideas. But too much didn't add up. After months of research I was quite disappointed to realize that the basis of at least some of his theories (the ones I researched anyway) were too full of holes to be true.

There is an upside though - this a GREAT fictional story!

Real seekers of truth will check multiple sources and validate claims from many different sources. Do this and in time you will find the truth.

If you are looking to be entertained, look no further.

3 out of 5 stars A LITTLE BIT CONFUSING..........2007-09-13

The book somewhat confused me because of some claims. The author also states that the reader should read his other books to understand this book clearly. Nevertheless, I still admire Zecharia Sitchin for all his efforts.

5 out of 5 stars A Keeper.......2007-09-06

Buying a book is one thng haveing it be worth the storage space another. This is worth the storage space.

1 out of 5 stars Creative .......2007-08-27

Sitchin can spin a tale of fiction that is inspired to say the least. He is universally hated in the astronomical, archaeological, and historical communities for his attempt to pass pseudo science off as fact. If fact is not what you are after, then buy this book and invest in a tinfoil hat.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing ****** SPOILER ALERT *******.......2007-08-21

I've read all of Sitchin's books and was always pleased at the conclusion of each one. They were like adventure quests of hidden knowledge with the worst case scenario being a nice scifi story (and what a story!). This one left me wanting. I believe he just wanted to put his two cents in about 2012 even though he doesn't think it will be a date that anything significant happens. I think he's got a better theory floating around in his head but didn't want to share it for whatever reason. The beginning of the book is a bit boring as he has to tell the back story. The middle is more interesting with more detail about the tales of the annunaki and their petty power struggles. The end was a bitter disappointment to me. His theory on the davinci last supper painting, in which he thinks the space between jesus and mary/john is where elijah should be and the missing cup being the grail that elijah took, is just lacking. To me the alternate grail theories make more sense and have better documentation. Obviously this book is a must read if you've read the rest of the series as how can one not read the supposed last one but it doesn't hold up to his prior standard. When does Sitchin think the annunaki will return? Sometime in the age of pisces .... and that only leaves up to anywhere from 100 years from now to about 800 years from now depending on if you are going by the math or by sight.

This book does what it sets out to do: teach spreadsheet modeling. I'm only on the third chapter, but the author does a good job including step by step instructions on how to create winning models. The author is also very easy to understand. So if you're going to be doing optimization and modeling in your work, I highly recommend this book.
