The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have given the U.S. Army's Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, a central role in American military action like never before. Several hundred U.S. Special Forces operators helped a motley band of Afghan rebels orchestrate a stunning rout when they overthrew the Taliban after 9/11. In Iraq, as journalist Linda Robinson explains in Masters of Chaos: The Secret History of the Special Forces, Special Forces units were the main U.S. elements on the ground in the northern and western regions of the country, where they defeated government forces that outnumbered them many times over. Robinson tells the story of the Special Forces through the eyes of a few of its more colorful personalities, men with call signs like Rawhide and Killer. She follows them around the world from Panama and El Salvador to Somalia, Kosovo, and, finally, Afghanistan and Iraq. Surprisingly, however, she devotes only a few pages to the Green Beret-led victory in Afghanistan, even though it was arguably their greatest achievement since they were created after World War II.

Critics and supporters of the recent American interventions alike should find the technical proficiency of the Special Forces interesting and impressive. Each 12-soldier team may marshal more than a century of combined experience in weapons, foreign languages, intelligence, communications, air control, and trauma medicine. For a book about such an action-packed subject, though, Robinson's effort is somewhat dry, and she devotes more time to mundane background biographies than to the dramatic battle scenes in which the Special Forces invariably find themselves. In addition, Robinson's "secret history" is an authorized and sympathetic one, and readers may be left wondering what she may have left out of her accounts in order to maintain her access. --Alex Roslin

Book Description

A journalist with unique access tells the gripping, never-before-told, inside story of America's elite troops in action -- from the nadir of their reputation after Vietnam to their preeminence today on the frontlines against terrorism around the world.

Special Forces soldiers are daring, seasoned troops from America's heartland, selected in a tough competition and trained in an extraordinary range of skills. They know foreign languages and cultures and unconventional warfare better than any U.S. fighters, and while they prefer to stay out of the limelight, veteran war correspondent Linda Robinson gained access to their closed world. She traveled with them on the frontlines, interviewed them at length on their home bases, and studied their doctrine, methods and history. In Masters of Chaos she tells their story through a select group of senior sergeants and field-grade officers, a band of unforgettable characters like Rawhide, Killer, Michael T, and Alan -- led by the unflappable Lt. Col. Chris Conner and Col. Charlie Cleveland, a brilliant but self-effacing West Pointer who led the largest unconventional war campaign since Vietnam in northern Iraq.

Robinson follows the Special Forces from their first post-Vietnam combat in Panama, El Salvador, Desert Storm, Somalia, and the Balkans to their recent trials and triumphs in Afghanistan and Iraq. She witnessed their secret sleuthing and unsung successes in southern Iraq, and recounts here for the first time the dramatic firefights of the western desert. Her blow-by-blow story of the attack on Ansar al-Islam's international terrorist training camp has never been told before. The most comprehensive account ever of the modern-day Special Forces in action, Masters of Chaos is filled with riveting, intimate detail in the words of a close-knit band of soldiers who have done it all. AUTHOR BIO: Linda Robinson is a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report. She was a Nieman fellow at Harvard University in 2000-2001 and in 1999 she received the Maria Moors Cabot prize form Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. She has covered numerous wars, guerrilla conflicts and special forces operations, and currently lives in Washington, D.C.

3 out of 5 stars Tons of interesting stuff, but..........2007-05-18

I guess I'm a fan of this book, but I can't make myself call it anything better than "good." There are some truly great parts, but I struggled through quite a bit. Maybe my expectations were too high, but this book didn't thrill me like I was expecting. I wanted a gripping, real-life story of the modern Special Forces in action. I only got that in doses. I hate to use this word, but I even found it "boring" at times.

5 out of 5 stars well worthy.......2007-03-17

A very easy to read tense and exciting account of a snapshot in the life of these fairly extraordinary human beings. Written a bit in the style of b/hawk down it gives a glimpse of the other sides of the soldiers involved. A must for any admirer of good special forces lit.The book also provides a sneak preview into iraq and afghanistan All in all a great read

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best books on the Special Forces.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent read on a very reclusive and elite group in the US Army. It details many great feats by many great men over the last 20 years. Linda Robinson does a great job at righting this book and keeping it interesting and flowing along and covers most everything in great detail without making the story drag.

4 out of 5 stars Why Special Forces are special.......2006-12-30

This is a good collection of military stories covering the past fifteen years based on interviews with soldiers, official government documents and archival material. Some details are left out so as to protect security and identities of countries involvements in operations but overall it is a fun read for the military enthusiast. The activites of the Special Forces(aka Green Berets) is well chronicled but to a much lesser extent the exploits of the much more secret(to use a word from the title)Delta Force and Seal operations are discussed even though many operations are in conjunction with these other elite forces. Linda Robinson takes you globetrotting to witness "behind the scenes" how America's Special Forces is fighting terrorism throughout the world. Operations discussed through recollections and documents include Panama, El Salvador, Desert Storm, Somalia, The Balkans, Afghanistan and of course Iraq. Recommended for an overview of the Special Forces various counterterrorism missions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-11-10

This book is very exciting, because it tells us of the Special Forces missions that have happened most recently, and not just the ones we've heard about so much over and over again in the past. There are not very many in depth stories about the SF operations that have been conducted in Iraq/Afghanistan so it is nise to read about some of the action that we never heard about on the news. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the SF and about the 'behind the scenes' war that went on and is still going on today.

I bought this book for my son who is going in to the Army in a few months. He read the book and found a lot of useful information in it. He's glad that he read it and has gone back through it a 2nd time.

5 out of 5 stars Great .......2007-02-11

I am a graduate of Ranger School Class 2-99 and I thought this was an excellent book on how individuals that read this book can apply their leadership skills to civilian and military occupations. For the longest time, it has been difficult for me to explain to friends, family, and fellow Army officers what Ranger School was about, other than it being totally miserable for 62 days.

The individuals that shared their stories in this book are authentic because I remember the days they described. Brace Barber made this book interesting because he used other Soldier's points of view on Ranger School and how they perceived the lessons they learned about leadership. The Army claims Ranger School is the ultimate leadership school and I have to agree 100% with them. I plan to make it a requirement for my platoon leaders to read this book when I take command. RLTW!

5 out of 5 stars Non- stop motovation!.......2006-08-15

I have never read a book that has inspired me more.
I was in the Army for 8yrs and was a paratrooper, this book has inspired me too the point that i have re-entered the Army at 33
in hopes of becoming a special forces soldier. I enjoyed reading about the passion, drive, and comradery that the elite rangers and ranger battalion's share.

5 out of 5 stars Leadership is not Management.......2006-06-24

Apart from Jack Schropp's book: Unbeatable: Lessons from a Navy Seal ... this is pretty good. The best leaders often emerge when it is literally do or die. What more obvious scenario than being in a combat zone. There is some wisdom that in life there are no excuses, only results, and a healthy warrior spirit is a strong quality in a leader. Perhaps that is why Alexander the Great conquered the entire known world by 26.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing insight into the role of National Guardsmen at war.......2007-09-02

I have read several dozen books on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. While I have enjoyed all of these books immensely, they all concentrated on conventional military units or special operations forces. They almost never mentioned anything about the role of National Guard units in these conflicts. For this reason, I was shocked to find out that many of our National Guardsmen are the proverbial "tip of the spear". Due to the fact that these men and women are not full-time soldiers, and hold normal, everyday jobs/careers, I always assumed that they would be located in rear-echelon positions. Perhaps serving in support roles. The reality of their participation couldn't be farther from what I had imagined. Like the squad of Navy SEALs who come across the Oregon National Guardsmen during a major engagement in Iraq, I was very impressed by their fighting skills. These men are going in harm's way as much as the traditional military units like the 82nd Airborne, the 101st Airborne, the 4th ID, and the Marines Expeditionary Units. It is hard to imagine being a working class joe one day, and the next day serving in scouting/direct action positions in Najaf or Fallujah. Thank you to John Bruning for bringing to light the brave, patriotic souls of the U.S. National Guard units. They should be receiving so much more publicity from the American media. It is a travesty that their sacrifice in service is not being acknowledged as much as their full-time military brethren. I am going to recommend this book to all my friends and family. Mr. Bruning is a great author and I can't wait to read his next book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Highly Recommend.......2007-05-14

Must read if you are trying to understand what National Guard Soldiers and other service members endure on deployment to Iraq.

5 out of 5 stars Been There, Done That.......2007-02-12

I was with this unit in OIF-II in the capacity of a Medic. If you want to get a good feel for what Oregon's 2/162 did in Iraq, this is the book to read. I've read a number of military history books and sincerely feel that this is one of the better books I've read. Bruning looks at the overall strategic picture and details the reader from a tactical perspective, as well. Having known the troops in the book, as well as the others, I am extremely grateful to see our efforts noted and appreciated. Thanks John... very well done!

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-02-12

Having served in three branches of the military, including the Oregon Army National Guard, I am well acquainted with the personalities that John Bruning so deftly brings to the pages of his book. There are some typographical errors that I'm more than willing to overlook simply because this book is a great effort to educate the general public about the realities of being citizen soldiers. Putting civilian lives on hold to travel thousands of miles from home, to be thrown into the jaws of hell, is something that can only be fully understood by being there. Mr. Bruning has done a wonderful job of getting the rest of us just a little bit closer.

4 out of 5 stars Devil's Sandbox.......2007-01-19

This book is about my sons Battalion. After I read it and was drwn into the very moment that was taking place I had my son read it and we discussed it. He said there were a couple of incorrect statements but for the most part it was right on.
It is indepth, correct, compelling and heart renching.

Book Description

They are the Army's most elite top-secret strike force. But you won't hear about their heroics on the news, no headlines about them can appear in the papers, and no one—not even their families—can know who they are. First Special Forces Operational Detachment-D—Delta Force, America's supersecret counterterrorist unit. On paper they do not exist, but without them, our lives wouldn't be the same.

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes account, founding member Eric L. Haney, Command Sergeant Major, USA (ret.), takes you into the grueling selection and training process of Delta Force. From learning how to open a padlock with a soda can to rescuing a hijacked airplane, these men are masters of espionage and warfare. They are the anonymous heroes who protect us every day from threats we'll never know existed.

Download Description

He is a master of espionage, trained to take on hijackers, terrorists, hostage takers, and enemy armies. He can deploy by parachute or arrive by commercial aircraft. Survive alone in hostile cities. Speak foreign languages fluently. Strike at enemy targets with stunning swiftness and extraordinary teamwork. He is the ultimate modern warrior: the Delta Force Operator.

In this dramatic behind-the-scenes chronicle, Eric Haney, one of the founding members of Delta Force, takes us inside this legendary counterterrorist unit. Here, for the first time, are details of the grueling selection process -- designed to break the strongest of men -- that singles out the best of the best: the Delta Force Operator.

With heart-stopping immediacy, Haney tells what it's really like to enter a hostage-held airplane. And from his days in Beirut, Haney tells an unforgettable tale of bodyguards and bombs, of a day-to-day life of madness and beauty, and of how he and a teammate are called on to kill two gunmen targeting U.S. Marines at the Beirut airport. As part of the team sent to rescue American hostages in Tehran, Haney offers a first-person description of that failed mission that is a chilling, compelling account of a bold maneuver undone by chance -- and a few fatal mistakes.

From fighting guerrilla warfare in Honduras to rescuing missionaries in Sudan and leading the way onto the island of Grenada, Eric Haney captures the daring and discipline that distinguish the men of Delta Force. Inside Delta Force brings honor to these singular men while it puts us in the middle of action that is sudden, frightening, and nonstop around the world.

4 out of 5 stars The creation of The Delta Force.......2007-08-14

Eric Haney, tells his tale as one of the founding members of the Delta Force, and what it took to to become a member. This book is filled with tons of informative information, plus little trinkets Eric toss's in here and there(for instance fill a squirt gun with ammonia to knock a man out).

However there is nothing other, then the selection process to become a delta member, and training. There is not a journal from jungle missions, to desert ops(although Haney makes reference to comrades he later fights with, some of whom die).

Despite that, this book is still very appealing. It teaches you the stunning thing these men are capable of, such as boarding airplanes in flight and the rigourous training, that makes them as close to invincible as any man will ever become.

All in all, great book, great group of men it's based on.

4 out of 5 stars Inside Delta Force.......2007-06-13

I enjoyed this book as an"intro" into how special forces work. I love the show "The Unit" and this book tells about how things work in the military that we as citizens never know exits. It was fascinating!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for Teens.......2007-05-07

This book gives the reader an in depth view of training for the most top secert/elite unit in the U.S. Army, the Special Forces (Delta). The author states several times that he will try to give as much detail as he can without breaching unit security. With the riggerous training and grulling psychological testing, there are some instances of humor, I will not go into any detail. To find out you will just have to read it for your self.

i could not put this book down... front to back in one setting! personally, i have been waiting for this book for years, and i am so glad sgt. haney has led the way! i only wish i had an autographed copy so i could meet the man himself.
anyone who has heard stories about this unit, and has thought and pondered the challenges and sacrifices of our nation's best, will savor every detail and word in this book, as he reveals how much strength and determination these men apply. these men can overcome...anything!
sgt. haney has brought so much honor to those men who serve. anyone who reads this book will realize, that the only reason americans can sleep peacefully at night is because of men who are prepared to face the evil of the world at a moments notice! god bless em!

5 out of 5 stars A great book that brings to life the soldiers of the US Army Vietnam.......2007-07-20

Few books have been published regarding the US Army and its equipment during the Vietnam War. Miraldi has dared to tackle a very difficult and complex topic regarding the US front-line troop, Ranger and LRRP members by offering a extremely detailed and accurate guide to collectors and anyone with a general interest within the topic.

This book is filled with multiple pictures of both impressions and period photographs (color and B&W) - which really brings the US Army soldier of Vietnam into a greater perspective for anyone who may pick up the book. The chronological ordering is helpful and expressly shows how and why uniforms and equipment changed. Miraldi does an excellent job of distinguishing between years, Corps/zones, and on into individual infantry divisions/brigades - all along showing the unique distinctions between uniforms and equipment of the US Army.

The book is well sourced, mainly from Stanton and Lyles works, and by all means Miraldi separates this work from the sources. Miraldi does an excellent job in showing multiple insignia, rarer pieces of field gear (delta boots?!!?), tons of different types of uniforms, and even includes an appendix (with CLOSEUP pictures) in the back to distinguish Vietnam gear from postwar items (even ERDL/RDF camouflage!)That section alone is worth picking up this book for the 'newbs'. Even the older collectors shouldn't pass up this read/browse - the pictures are good and plentiful on high gloss paper wrapped in a sturdy hardback binding and makes a wonderful additional to any personal library.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is starting out collecting, to a person with a general interest (that needs to grow), or any collector who wishes to expand both their knowledge and understanding of US Army Uniforms and Equip of Vietnam. A real one of a kind book that follows in the footsteps of some, but really separates itself in many unique and wonderful ways. This book serves as a huge leap in better understanding the soldiers of Vietnam through the things they carried, and will continue to be one of the best sources of information regarding this topic. This book DOES NOT disappoint - a true landmark work for a war with not enough devotion and understanding from many. Thanks to Miraldi we can better understand this turbulent time. A+

1 out of 5 stars worthless.......2007-06-18

i only gave this book one star because it you have to.this is the most retarded book ive seen.its just some retards who threw some vietnam era cloths on and took picture in a studio.no real use for this book i could have done the same thing in my back yard. dont waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars Very Misleading.......2007-04-06

The cover of this book shows all soldiers wearing Tigerstripe uniforms, but inside, there are very few pictures of these uniforms, VERY MISLEADING.

This book should be titled, "The Plastic Spoon in Vietnam", in the first couple of pages, the author emphasizes the spoon in the pictures! Why??? (the spoon is inside the pockets of the uniforms). If the author only did this in ONE picture, then OK which was my reaction but in more & more pictures, no way!

Some of the photos show the male models wearing the uniforms that the author has collected, my problem is with some of the helmets, they look like toys, extremely bad helmets, the author should have put a kid under these helmets, not a grown man, and to make it worse, some of the helmet covers just do not look like they were from the Vietnam era.

The author shows US Army unit insignias, he compares actual US insignias from the Vietnam war with South Vietnamese made copies of the same insignias, and you can see the poor quality of the South Vietnamese made insignias, again, it is ok showing a couple of them but he shows a lot of these, no!

The cover for this book shows LRRP's/Rangers from the Vietnam War, which is VERY misleading, inside there are a couple of pictures of these soldiers but here comes the first problem, in a couple of pages, he REPEATS the same picture...one in color, the other in black & white, and he ONLY does this to the FEW pictures of LRRP's/Rangers. Another problem with the few pictures of these types of soldiers is that the photos show "ghosting" plus some of them show blurring/bad spots, why were these pictures put into the book, absolutely no quality control.

Another thing wrong with the book is the wasted pages showing the author in the US Army during the 80's/90's which has nothing to do with Vietnam. Why did he include these pictures?

The ONLY good part is that the author does show some photos of actual soldiers in Vietnam. (Most are posed with smiles)

This book is NOT recommended by me, the author wastes a lot of pages with bad pictures, the spoon, his time in the Army which was NOT during the Vietnam War.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Vietnam Reference.......2006-04-19

This book covers the uniforms and equipment used by U.S. Army infantry and Ranger units from 1965 to 1972. Complete outfits are shown, head to foot, which illustrates how the gear goes together, which items were used during what year, etc. I feel that this method is far better than other books that show a lone shirt on a bust form with a caption like "this is a Vietnam era shirt". The same problem arises with field gear in other books. They show a single canteen cover or compass pouch but never show any equipment assembled as it was actually worn in the field. Miraldi's book is like going back in time and taking a close look at the uniforms & gear carried by individual troopers year by year. Since there is a lot of post 1975 uniforms and field equipment that closely resemble items used in Vietnam, Miraldi explains these differences and points out the details to look for when identifying these items. This book isn't so much a "textbook" about the war, it is more of a hands-on "guide" to use when putting together uniforms and field gear. I believe this book accomplishes this very well and I make regular references to it.

As a collector, one of the most useful books I have found in identifying historical information from everything from badges to berrets. It is written in such a way that can easily be understood by all ages. The pictures and illustrations are a great addition to this great work.

The seventh in a series of books by Tom Clancy offering in-depth "tours" of the U.S. military, Special Forces surveys the soldiers who "are perhaps America's most professional and capable warriors." Who are they? They are the men--and only men, for women are not allowed to become SF soldiers--who are "specially selected, specially trained, specially equipped, and given special missions and support." The Army Special Forces--known to much of the public as Green Berets--are often the first troops on the scene in a crisis. They're also incredibly versatile: "If you're looking for a Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger, don't expect to find them in today's Army Special Forces." That's because specialized missions--involving anything from psychological operations meant to undermine enemy morale to guerilla warfare in remote jungles--require flexibility. "Specialized missions (paradoxically) require a broad range of general capabilities and skills," which means SF soldiers, "while physically fit, tend to be more balanced (like triathletes) than specialized (like marathoners and weightlifters)."

Clancy and his coauthor, John Gresham, describe how SF soldiers are recruited, trained, and assigned. There are plenty of interesting notes about SF culture: They don't especially like being called "Green Berets," for instance, even though most units carry a copy of the John Wayne movie The Green Berets in their traveling video libraries. They are typically in their 30s, divorced and remarried, intelligent, interested in the news, and able to speak more than one language. There are also lots of details on weaponry, chronicles of training missions, and plenty of maps and pictures. The book ends with a fictionalized account of an SF mission in 2005 and 2006.

Special Forces is replete with Clancy's tough-guy prose: "The overall media presentation of the Army Special Forces has generally been one of contrived crap." And the book is essentially a celebration of a premier fighting force, rather than a critical treatment of it. But this is not necessarily a weakness. Special Forces will appeal to anybody interested in the modern military, and it may bring civilians closer than they'll ever come to these important troops. --John J. Miller

3 out of 5 stars Typical Clancy.......2007-01-22

Very dry, almost boring. Typical Clancy writing. I realize it is not a novel but I have read other books on SF and they are much more interesting although not as in depth as Clancy's. This book is a little outdated now. You can probably find more up to date information on SF.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond the Beret: Clancy's book dispels myths about SF...........2004-02-13

Special Forces, the seventh and final entry in Tom Clancy's nonfiction Guided Tour series about America's armed forces, sets its sights on the shadowy -- and often misunderstood -- roles and missions of the men the author calls "the quiet professionals" of the Army's Special Forces command.

Although the public image of the Special Forces stems from such movies as John Wayne's 1968 cornball classic The Green Berets and the Rambo trilogy (Stallone's John Rambo is a former SF veteran who served in Vietnam) and Sgt. Barry Sadler's once-popular "Ballad of the Green Berets," Clancy and his co-author John D. Gresham point out that far from being hell-for-leather, shoot-first-ask-questions-later killing machines, SF soldiers are actually among the best troops in the U.S. Army. They have to be, because their missions -- ranging from blowing up a bridge or weapons factory far behind enemy lines to organizing, training, advising, and assisting foreign armies and police forces of "host" countries "to protect their societies or free them from subversion, lawlessness, insurgency, and terrorism." This means that in addition to their combat roles in Afghanistan and Iraq, SF teams are among the busiest of America's soldiers.

One of the more interesting insights I got from reading Special Forces is related to the role played by SF deployments in El Salvador during the darkest days of that Central American nation's long-running civil war. The Reagan Administration, knowing that any major American military intervention would be very unpopular at home and abroad (a Vietnam II in our own back yard, to put it bluntly), was caught in a decision-making dilemma. Clearly they did not wish El Salvador to "go Red" as Cuba and Nicaragua had in the past, yet they knew the ruling class -- derived from the wealthy class of landowners and other top honchos -- was also very indifferent about the conditions of the Salvadoran poor, particularly those in the countryside. Using the army and national guard -- themselves derived from El Salvador's small middle class -- in repressive and counterproductive ways, El Salvador's government just made matters worse, using indiscriminate tactics and the infamous death squads. Surely, Washington couldn't be too closely linked to a small group of wealthy "patrones" whose only interest was to maintain their lock on power and to ignore the people's legitimate demands for justice and social reform.

The solution? To use Special Forces to gradually change the mindset of the Salvadoran army. It took time, and quite a few of the SF advisers lost their lives in the crossfire between leftist forces and the army. Nevertheless, the Salvadoran officers and soldiers were "re-educated" and, as Clancy writes, "the Salvadoran Army tried acting in other than brutal and repressive ways toward their fellow countrymen, they began to halt activities of their death squads and to actually show respect for basic human rights.

As a result, the rebels lost a lot of support, the Army started winning hearts, minds, and territory, and "by the end of the Cold War [a] peace treaty was a done deal, the civil war had ended, and today there is a coalition government...." Granted, the SF deployments alone were not responsible for this achievement, but they had a major effect in getting the Salvadoran people to see that the way things were being handled by both the government and the rebels were just leading to more bloodshed and chaos.

As in all the Guided Tour series, which are being updated to reflect changes in technology, doctrine, and world realities, Special Forces gives the general reading audience a look at the equipment, training, organization, and the soldiers themselves. There is an interview with Gen. Henry H. Shelton USA (Ret) former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and an experienced Special Operations veteran who served with the Special Forces and also commanded Special Operations Command from 1996 to 1998. There are also overviews of the larger Special Operations Command and, finally, a short fictional account of SF personnel in action.

(Oh, and while the Special Forces troops are proud of their famous headgear, they really don't like to be called "Green Berets." As one of them told the authors, "We are NOT hats!")

2 out of 5 stars A Weak Showing from the 'Master of the Techno Thriller'.......2003-03-08

I should have known when I noticed in the store that this book lacked an index, that I should have put it back on the shelf. The omission of an index in what is purportedly an information resource is generally a bad omen, as illustrated by this book.

The book feels rushed and half-hearted. The information included, whether on weapons systems or unit history is spotty, at best, and missing or incorrect at worst. Delta, which admittedly is not officially operational, rates only a single, offhanded mention. There is a definite biased slant towards Army Special Forces at the expense of other branches, and while it would be expected if this were written by an USASOC denizen, it is inappropriate and unprofessionial in this context.

The photos are grainy and rather oddly chosen and the use of black and white printing, presumably to save money, shows a sincere lack of attention when the book shows different SF unit badges as uniformly gray patches.

This book pales when compared to earlier efforts like Marine or Carrier and comes across as a quickly produced reaction to growing interest in U.S. Special Operations.

3 out of 5 stars He Could Do Better.......2002-04-16

I want to say right at the front that I am a very big fan of Clancy, both his fiction and non-fiction work. After the current war in Afghanistan started and there were descriptions that the start of the fighting was being carried out by Special Forces, I thought this book would be a great educational tool to help me better understand the new reports. The book does give a broad understanding of the different US military Special Forces groups, a run down on training, tactics and weapons, but it did not offer much punch in the writing. I also felt like many chapters were almost cut and paste jobs from the chapters before. Overall I felt that the book could have been about 30 - 50 pages shorter and said the same thing, this disappoints me because those pages could have been filled with more real life examples as to the missions these guys actually perform.
Overall this is a good effort by the Clancy team; it is not as good as the Submarine or Carrier books in this line, but a solid effort. I guess I am just expecting more from one of my favorite authors.

I was in Special Forces Bad Tolz Germany July 1954 to Oct 1956. Most of the books I have read always say that we did not wear the "green beret" till after President Kennedy 1955. We took traning with the French in 1954, at that time they gave us the Green Beret. I have pictures of that. Carl Arndt

The success of Tom Brokaw's Greatest Generation has sparked a renewed interest in books about World War II and the people who fought in it. Patrick K. O'Donnell maintains, however, that behind those official histories and carefully crafted memoirs lies a "hidden war"--"a bottled up, buried version shielded even from family members because many of the memories are too painful to discuss." In Beyond Valor, O'Donnell brings this hidden war to the surface, allowing men from the elite forces to tell their own stories, thus creating a fascinating combat history of WWII.

O'Donnell introduces readers to some of the greatest of the greatest generation--men such as Robert Kinney of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, wounded by a mortar at Anzio ("it tore my fanny open, took a big chunk of meat out of there--I could afford that"). While in the hospital, wounded members of the regiment were asked by one of their officers to return to the front:

We all went down, about forty of us in casts, bandages, arms in slings and everything. He said, "Your buddies up there are catching hell and we've got to go back if we can. You don't have to, we're not going to order you, but we're looking for volunteers." We said, "Hell, we'll go." We had just the best-spirited bunch of scrappers you ever saw.
There are also stories about compassion in the midst of carnage. Albert Hassenzahl of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was seriously injured on a drop during the Normandy invasion. While waiting to be rescued, the wind blew his blanket off him. A man on an adjacent stretcher reached over and carefully tucked the blanket in around Hassenzahl. The other man was a German POW. "I didn't say a word to him, but I was able to move my head a little and looked over at him ... neither of us said a word, but mentally I might have said 'thank you' with my eyes and he might have said 'you're welcome' with his."

Though it will certainly appeal to them, O'Donnell insists that Beyond Valor is not aimed at war buffs--it's for the soldiers themselves. "My work has been one of preservation, done in gratitude for a generation that sacrificed so much." By sharing these stories, O'Donnell has helped to preserve and honor their memory. --Sunny Delaney

Book Description

Previous books have promised to describe the combat experience of the World War II GI, but there has never been a book like Patrick O'Donnell's Beyond Valor. Here is the first combat history of the war in Europe in the words of the men themselves, and perhaps the most honest and brutal account of combat possible on the printed page. For more than fifty years the individual stories that make up this narrative -- shockingly frank reflections of sacrifice and courage -- have been bottled up, buried, or circulated privately. Now, nearing the ends of their lives, our WWII soldiers have at last unburdened themselves.

Beyond Valor recaptures their hidden history. A pioneering oral historian, Patrick O'Donnell used his award-winning website, The Drop Zone, to solicit oral- and "e-histories" from individual soldiers. Gradually, working from within the community, O'Donnell convinced some of the war's most battle-hardened soldiers to tell their stories. The result is WWII seen through the eyes of the men who saw the most intense of its action. O'Donnell focuses on the elite units of the war -- the Rangers, Airborne, and 1st Special Service Force -- troops that spearheaded the most dangerous operations and often made the difference between victory and defeat.

From more than 650 interviews O'Donnell has chosen oral- and e-histories that form a seamless story line, a pointillistic history of the war in Europe from the first parachute drops in North Africa through the final battles in Germany and the long trip home. It is the story of the war not discussed in polite company. O'Donnell presents the wreckage of entire battalions nearly annihilated, invisible personal scars, and haunting revelations of wartime atrocities. But more important are the men who recount lives risked without hesitation for comrades and cause, and those who did not return: the friends who died in their arms. Their stories remind all of us that victory came only at the highest price.

Remembering the infamous cliffs at Pointe-du-Hoc, bloody Omaha Beach, the bitter fighting at the Battle of the Bulge, and Hill 400 in the Hürtgen Forest, the soldiers reveal war as seen, heard, and smelled by the GIs on the front line. Also included is the unique story of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, and the trailblazing African-American "Experimental" Test Platoon that had to fight its own battle behind the lines.

Beyond Valor captures the truths that exist among soldiers. It is one of the most inspiring accounts of the war ever produced.

Download Description

Beyond Valor is a stunning tribute to our "greatest generation" in the words of the men themselves. Pioneering oral historian Patrick K. O'Donnell, the founder of the award-winning Web site The Drop Zone, draws from over 600 interviews with veterans to weave together the full personal account of WWII's elite troops and tell the combat history of the war in the men's own words. The book covers the entire European theater, from North Africa to Normandy to Germany. Through these eyewitness accounts and previously unpublished photographs, readers experience the infamous fighting on Omaha Beach, in the Hurtgen Forest, and at the Battle of the Bulge. These intensely personal stories are often horrific: tales of best friends killed, of whole units decimated, and of the madness of wartime atrocities. Given a rare chance to speak, our soldiers have unburdened themselves of fifty years' pent-up emotion. The result is both shocking and moving.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Valor.......2007-09-15

I have read all four of Patrick O'Donnell's books. Each and everyone of them will touch your heart, especially if you have had a loved one who fought in WW2 or in Iraq.

Beyond Valor should be required reading for all Americans. We need to know the sacrifices that many have made for Freedom in order to truly appreciate all that we have in the United States.

3 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Emotions.......2007-02-09

This book is a novel idea and a good break from the regular "play-by-play" recounting of WWII action that seems to have become the norm. Here you will find the scene set by the author (for example, Mr. O'Donnell describes the lead up to the Normandy invasion) and then the veterans tell their tales. What really struck me was the multiple stories of dealing with what we now know as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some of these men dealt with their personal problems from the war for more than fifty years with little or no help. What price for freedom?

4 out of 5 stars detailed, but fractured.......2005-08-25

One of the best features of this book is the campaign map and summary at the start of each chapter. The soldier's position on the battle map is provided. I enjoyed reading the detailed war stories, some not told elsewhere.

However, I found the book read a bit like a web site. Instead of clicking on a link, you turn the page and some items are rehashed for you. I feel the editor could have done a bit better putting some flow to the stories. Some of the stories skip around a lot in time order, which can be confusing. I only need to see "CP [Command Post]" edited once, just the first time it appears, not in every story. I would read a story, then half way through I would find out the speaker was actually the unit's commanding officer! Would have been better to identify each person's rank / role clearly up front before getting into the details.

Despite these editing / structural annoyances, I learned a lot and enjoyed the veteran's candor.

5 out of 5 stars beyond valor.......2005-07-22

From the horses mouth is how we define a direct source. These stories, from those that experienced first hand, continually remind us how thankful we need to be for those who have fought for us, and those who are fighting for us, as well as those who will yet fight for us and our freedom.

4 out of 5 stars honest slice of combat experience.......2004-02-15

I have read O'Donnell's Into the Rising Sun which I thought was a superb book that gives you the honest slice of combat experience as told by the veterans. This book was written before that one so I expected the same and was not disappointed. Many of these stories get told 45-50 years after the fact, memories may fade but experiences and understanding of combat does not. Once more, this book collects a short set of stories as told by the veterans of their combat experiences. The stories were short but honest and with far more insight then most World War II movies put together. Some of them come with a late hour confessions of killing of enemy POWs or wounded enemy, some time in the heat of battle, some time out of need for survival. One man even kept photos of the three dead Germans from their paybooks. Maybe some of the more negative reviews didn't like that, after all it was more comfortable to know that ONLY Germans and Japanese troop were the ones that murdered POWs and shoot defenseless wounded soldiers. Shocking that we Americans did something like that in war. (It also allowed me to have a new perception whenever I read about enemy soldiers shooting American POWs or woundeds in battle...maybe they felt anger and hatred toward the Americans who were killing their buddies, comrades and mentors. Who say war was fair, eh?)

The book is written in a very readable form, its well organized and quality of the stories varies in details. But you will get a good slice of understanding of what it may be like, to be a soldier in war. Reading a book like this may also give an understanding that soldiers of other nations, even our enemies may have gone through the same experience.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST HAVE for your Special Forces collection!.......2006-04-07

I practically own every book on the subject on the Green Berets in Vietnam, and this one is superb by far. Brief histories (pick up Stanton's Green Berets at War for more written history) are provided, but the PICTURES! This book follows the Special forces in Vietnam (mostly Green Berets) chronologically with pictures,I have never seen 98% of the photos in this book published anywhere else ever! Great amount of detail following the SF into Laos, VN A-camps (best pics ever), weapons, 'yards, nungs, SOG (personal favorite), and anything else. I cannot praise Shelby Stanton enough for this book, along with the rest of his wonderful collections.
This book is a great reference that is invaluable to anyone remotely interested in the Special forces. The maps in the back are superb as well, and great overhead pics of base camps including part/full layouts!! No other book on the Green Berets can even touch the sheer magnitude and scale this book covers. A true prize for any collector - Running Recon (Greco) and SOG A Photo History (Plaster) are really the only illustrated books that have as great of a scale. In many respects this book stands alone - If I could give this book a 6/5 I would - actually I would give it an infinite - If you are into the Vietnam Green Berets or really any Special Forces from any era - BUY THIS BOOK NOW NO MATTER THE PRICE!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compendium of the SF in Southeast Asia.......1997-01-21

The book is a great photographic representation of the Green Berets in Southeast Asia. From helicopter rides and walks in the jungle to training and living with the natives, its pictures and narratives take the reader through the many missions of the men of Special Forces in Vietnam and the surrounding countries. One can see (and almost feel) the sweat, pain and the joys of those "selected few." The book is presented cronologically making events easy to follow, and it helps relating to the rest of the history of the Vietnam conflict. The book is a must have for those who like to remember and honor those "who were there.&quot

Instead, he joined the Filipino resistance and rose to command more than 40,000 guerrillas. The Japanese put the elusive American leader at the top of their death list. Rejecting the opportunity to escape, Ramsey withstood unimaginable fear, pain, and loss for three long years. Lieutenant Ramsey's War chronicles a remarkable true story of courage and perseverance.

5 out of 5 stars Humanizes the sacrifices and tragedies of war.......2006-07-30

Col. Ramsey, on foot in the junlges of the Philippines, with only the help of the kind Philippine people----puts war in human terms and visions I can relate to. People suffer with death, starvation, torn off body parts, and disease. Horrible. As a teacher I may use this book to tap into my student's 'schema,' or mental map, to help them visulize the realities of war as being the dreadful scarifice it is, rather that some sort of unreal view of war as a "star wars" game.

5 out of 5 stars Knew Ramsay well.......2006-04-24

From 1960-64 I worked with Ramsay almost daily as a member of the US Embassy in Tokyo while he was VP for Hughes Aircraft in Tokyo. Hughes and two other US companies were bidding on a large joint US/Japan air weapons control project that Hughes in 1963 won. During this time he never once mentioned his guerrila activites during WW II except except a for small clue when he got for my wife and me a Visa during a visit by him to the PI Embassy to visit Clark after the PI govt had refused them through regular channels. During the visit to Clark I asked a number of citizens if they had heard of Ed Ramsay and with little exception they said he was a National Hero. After reading a summary of Lt Ramsay's War in the Readeer's Digest I obtained the un-abridged version and agree with the comments of others about his disclipine and dedication to his country he exhibited in setting up and operating a highly effective guerilla force in the Philippines at great risk to himself and those that worked with him. The book has now been republished and is well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A riveting story of life on the run........2004-01-04

This book describes what barely can be described. The hardships, the fear, the exhaustion, the hunger, the brutality, the uncertainty of ones fate. It's all right here, and all are apt descriptions of the life of Lt. Ramsey from the fall of Bataan until the time in 1945 that Gen MacArthur returned to liberate the Phillipines.

Lt. Ramsey (who was promotoed to Lt. Colonel over the course of his service in the jungle) was a very important leader of the resistance. He personally exchanged a few messages over the radio with MacArthur himself, and it was years before Ramsey even knew that MacArthur was getting his messages, as he went without radio contact for the first two years of the war.

Many of Ramsey's fellow resistance leaders, some of them officers he served with, or under, prior to the war, were captured, tortured, and beheaded. Informants were everywhere, and every move was a risk. Yet Ramsey never sat still, and his years were spent traveling, at great risk, throughout the Phillipines and organizing the resistance. Many close calls with the Kempa-tei, the Japanese secret police, followed. Ramsey eventually became the most wanted man on the island, after many of his fellow leaders were captured. He eventually went on to command a force of 40,000 resistance fighters.

The leader of the Kempa-tei, General Baba, personally conducted many of the raids and had a picture of Ramsey on his desk. Many times Ramsey was only yards from Japanese troops.

Of course, when this all started, Ramsey had no clue how to wage guerrilla war. But he learned, through trial and error, and it is amazing that he even survived the war. If that isn't enough, this is a man who survived having his appendix removed in the jungle by a doctor who had no morphine to numb the pain!

This is the kind of stuff Hollywood needs to make movies about. Instead we are stuck with the same dumbed down, recycled nonsense that apparently someone finds entertaining. And sadly the exploits of this true American hero go largely unknown by the majority of this country. I'm glad I am no longer one of them.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Heroic Man.......2002-10-20

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in World War II. It tells the story of the real heroes of Bataan, the men who refused to surrender but went into the mountains to continue the war against the Japanese. Lieutenant Edwin Price Ramsey should have been awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines.

...

5 out of 5 stars LOYALTY, PATRIOTISM, HEROISM and UNSELFISH DEVOTION.......2001-06-01

Those words barely begin to speak of the sacrifices Lt. Edwin Price Ramsey gave for his fellow countrymen, the war effort against the Japanese in the Philippines, the behind the scenes guerilla movement, and the Honor he bestowed upon the United States of America through his actions and his command. This gentlemanly young officer went from the glory of Army Polo into the depths of an unsuspected Hell in a matter of months to become well known as the leader of the very last Cavalry Charge in United States Army History for which the Distinguished Service Cross was bestowed upon him, at the age of 24!

This in-depth bio eloquently traces the Lieutenants' life from childhood to the end of WWII. His remarkable true story has more twists than a licorice stick as well as plenty of eye filling emotional sledge hammers.

I recommend this book highly to anyone who would like to know what the phrase "sacrifice for country" really means.

5 out of 5 stars Life is Combat.......2005-10-25

Whether you realize it or not, ever since Satan rebelled against God, every human being has arrived on planet earth - a world at war! Chuck's book shows how the lessons he learned as a more elite soldier - a US Army Ranger (hooah) - are directly applicable to life as a Christian being a more elite soldier in the army of the Lord and participating in the daily spiritual battle. Chuck also shows how God, knows us, loves us, and takes time to meet our needs - the last chapter will get your full and undivided attention and show you just how much God cares.

3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2005-04-08

I'm currently non-denominational and chose to read this book for two reasons: I served in the same Regiment as Mr. Holton (different time period) and I'm currently at a crossroads in my life concerning the idea of organized religion. Simply stated, I'm a lost sheep amongst the herd.
So I figured maybe I could pick up a few jewels from this book. And I feel I did.
But to the interested reader, be aware that this book is heavy on Army speak, to the point that I think it would take the average reader some time to try and understand what he talks about. I thought his stories were humorous, but then again much of what he says I've done before. So just understand that and further understand it's STILL worth reading.
It's an excellent resource for any soldier who's struggling to find the application of God in his life. I came to a realization yesterday that I'm missing something and oddly enough this book appeared in my life the same evening (odd, huh?). Fortuitous as it was, I read it in a day and firmly believe he deals w/ real-life issues concerning combat, leadership, and most important, spirituality, which in turn makes for a very good, down-to-earth read.
Three stars for the subject it covers; casual, combat-disinterested readers may not enjoy (even though combat isn't the issue he's hinting at--it's really revelations LEARNED from it which is the pot of gold).
If you're compelled by anything I've said, check it out.
