Not to be trusted.......2007-04-03
As i've done more due diligence I've found that Rubin is a marketer who has been far from above board in shamelessly promoting products with dubious health benefits. Whether he actually recovered from his terrible illness eating soil only he can say for sure. What is certain is that the 'studies' he references are paid for by Garden of Life and are not peer reviewed. It also seems he paid for his PhD from some sort of a degree mill.
A Great Educational Guide to Gut Health.......2007-01-03
I originally read this book a few years ago and I felt it did a great job in educating the reader about appropriate ways to restore and maintain optimal digestive health. It is very easy to understand and provides the reader with empowering knowledge about probiotics and many other factors that promote gut health. If you follow the tenets outlined in Rubin's work, you'll never have another digestive disturbance again! This is very significant seeing as 80% of all Americans experience digestive trouble regularly.

I give it 4 stars...........2006-07-15
I give it 4 stars. I bought it for my sister who has Crohn's Disease and Ulcerated Colitis. And while Jordan's story is an inspiration, a lot of the concepts & ideas are great and it is easy to read the recipes are not quite realistic. There are people with the disease like my sister who has a hard time keeping a job due to illness who can't afford to go find chicken feet and other things found at natural food stores. My sister has taken the basic concepts of this book and applied it to her life. She has been able to decrease a lot of her medicines. She is now due to have a baby girl, due 9/4/06, and is in remission from the Crohn's! Buy this book but realize that a lot of it is not very realistic.
Informative but Hard to Follow.......2006-07-05
The information in this book is excellent but the recommendations and recipes are very hard to follow because the ingredients are hard to find---like chickens feet (!) and other strange stuff like 30 hour cultured goats milk yogurt. Who can find that stuff?
It would have been better if it was more practical.
My immune system was down from lots of meds, now it is happy..........2006-05-19
Restoring Your Digestive Health is a great book for everyone especially if you tips on boosting your immune system and living a healthy life!
I especially love how Jordan Rubin and Jospeh Brasco tell the truth about the new healthy "Food Craze" about soy products. If you think soy is the new health food, think again. Soy is does not only contain a lot of phytic acid which is not beneficial to you but most of the soy products out there are now genetically modified! The government has subsidized so much soy I think that is why they are pimping it so badly in all the food markets. They have to make that money you know.
Genetically modified soy (Which is where we are getting most of our soy) is made up of soy and that they modified the DNA of and crossed it with the genes of bacteria and viruses to make it more resistant to bugs! If the bugs won't even eat it, why should humans consume it? I'm just telling you the facts about soy. So a little bit of Miso probably wouldn't hurt you but for the most part eat a healthy diet and avoid soy products.
I for instance have a life-threatening food allergy to soy and as I read more about what they are doing to make this fragile soy plant more resistant and "strong" I start to get scared because it is almost like eating a mutated monster that scientists concocted. No wonder soy is in the top five food allergens now according to my allergist's office.
We all need to start eating the way God intended for us to eat like in the Bible! We all desperately need the Word of God and Jesus in our lives for a truly healthy spiritual, emotional, and physical life. Believe me, I used to be in the hospital all the time for being so ill. Now I am getting so strong and healthy! Thank God.

Jump Into the Day-Trading Trenches and Sharpen Your Own Survival Skills
Every battle has its winners and losers. Every day, thousands of day traders take their battle positions in front of their computers to go head to head against the world's best, and most powerful, trading institutions. There are casualties—many casualties. But there are also victories—moments when an individual trader reaches the pinnacle of our capitalist system to take a profit from the market.
Making money isn't easy—with a 75 to 90 percent failure rate, only the strong survive, and only the most savvy live to trade another day. But despite the negative press, a wildly unpredictable market, and the possibility of losing their shirts on any given trading day, these market mercenaries continue to trade, and day trading continues to grow as a profession. What drives them? How do they do it? What are their secrets? In
The Guts & Glory of Day Trading, you'll read the astounding stories of those traders who have been skilled enough to make significant money, and the gut-wrenching dramas of those who were unfortunate enough to lose vast fortunes.
Whether you're a trader yourself or just a casual investor, their stories and strategies will keep you on the edge of your seat. The valuable lessons from this trading dozen tell more than just the pits and peaks of stock trading. They teach the survival skills and tactics necessary to live to trade another day. You can learn how to improve your own trading or investing techniques by learning what most of them did right—and what some of them did wrong.
"An excellent successor to Jack Schwager's Market Wizards. I highly recommend it to anyone serious about trading and investing."
—Zhiwu Chen, professor of finance, Yale University School of Management
"Mark Ingebretsen subtly debunks the worst day-trading stereotypes. The stories offer real-life lessons that any trader can profit from."
—Jamie Heller, editor-at-large, TheStreet.com
"Invaluable reading for anyone who considers making money in the stock market a priority."

A Handbook For Skeptics.......2005-11-09
I was thinking of leaving my present job (in the administrative field, basically, I work as a secretary in an office downtown San Francisco) for the glamorous field of day trading, because a cousin of mine claimed to have made over $10,000 a day for eight days in a row, and this fellow is a totally uneducated guy without a brain in his head, so I figured, how hard could it be? However Mark Ingebretsen's book convinced me that I'm not quite as ready as I thought I was to jump into the pool of guts they call the day trading game.
No matter if you're new to the job or an old hand, day trading requires either nerves of steel or a mind completely dulled by OxyContin. Ingebretsen has rounded up the usual suspects, but makes his own contribution of a radpidly expanding field by interviewing some luckless schlemiels who lost everything, and would you believe it, more than one of them claim they have no regrets! I'd be kicking myself around the block and these people are just flushed with triumphant and glistening with endorphins.
My cousin says he just went in on a dare from an old college roommate. They read a book called DAY TRADING FOR DUMMIES, and the next thing you know they were holding down space at one of those trading parlors in Sunnyside. And the next thing you know after that, Jeff (my cousin) is hosting a family reunion at "Firefly," his newly purchased retreat in Jamaica, formerly the home of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. However, envy and jealousy have torn his immediate family apart and none of them are coming, so what's the odds? It's like being a lottery winner. On the one hand, all your dreams come true, but on the other, like Jennifer Aniston, or Karl Rove, your life becomes miserable thanks to renewed public scrutiny.
Amateur at best.......2003-12-24
The 'error' in the title of this book is a representative of the appalling quality of the book. To be fair, the author cites his definition of 'day trading' which is *NOT* the industry accepted definition.
A couple of problems with this book:
- the author appears to have no idea regarding the topic of trading;
- it generally has little to do with day trading;
- most subjects in the books are average people who got lucky with apparently no skills (nor common sense);
- the book is written in a style suited to magazines, particularly those for pure entertainment - although unfortunately it is not entertaining at all. The author is unable to direct subjects to the appropriate topics and fails to extract anything substantial in any area; and
- there is very little useful and educational information in it at all (eg statistics / methods / psychology / money management).
There are many other books that are significantly better than this one, particularly Schwager's Market Wizards books.
If you're looking for some possibly fun (for those who haven't read anything in this area), brainless and easy reading - this could be your answer to boredom.
If you want anymore, I'd almost guarantee your disappointment.
The Worst trading book i've ever read.......2002-03-04
I am a full time equity & futures trader. I have read a lot of trading books. The Guts and Glory of Day Trading, has NOTHING to do with day trading. It's just story telling. No *exact* programming code revealed, no statistical analysis either. Overall, it tells you nothing at all about day trading.
Learn from others' mistakes.......2001-12-04
Dear Mark,
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your book. Of course I am trying to make a living as a daytrader, but what I find interesting is that your book has the mistakes the various traders have made as well as their success
stories. It is very inspirational to know that other people have setbacks too. I am living in Japan; I teach in the evenings then come home and trade from 11:30pm (Japan time) through to early morning, then sleep, then new day begins.......so I am a "night-trader"......... Anyway I just wanted to say I read and appreciated your book very much! Write another!
The worst book about day trading I've ever read.......2001-10-05
"What is a day trader? Maybe it doesn't matter."
Unfortunately for us readers, this statement (taken from the book) is not meant as a joke. Many of the chapters are about people who have absolutely nothing to do with day trading. It is amazing that the author claims to have selected these people from a much longer list of candidates. Well, maybe it isn't that amazing when you consider that everything in this book is based on phone interviews in which the "traders" presented their own stories. No trading records were reviewed, not a single account was audited.
Let's look at two examples taken from the book:
Example 1: "Barbara Hamilton" (her real name was not given in the book): divorced and received $525,000, which she turned into (the text isn't very specific about this) a little more than one million...by buying and holding internet stocks in 1998 and 1999. Despite being considered a "day trader" by the author, she was still holding them all the way down, and lost most of her money. The chapter ends with the words: "And she was bound and determined to make back her million."
Example 2: Mary Pugh: Bet all her money (!) on one single penny stock, held it on the way up, held it one the way down. Needless to say, that's a little different from what I consider day trading.
Just as an aside: The cover blurb ("Real-life lessons that any trader can profit from.") was written by Jamie Heller, editor-at-large at TheStreet.com, the web site Mark Ingebretsen used to write articles for. I guess that's what friends are for.

Ring of Fire - Last of the Rodeo Roots.......2007-01-27
I enjoyed reading Ring of Fire. Having been in and followed Rodeo for a great many years, Ring of Fire, is a look into the World of the Bull Rider, before it became a slick, Madison Avenue packaged production. At that time, the Rodeo roots were still alive and well and Hollywood had not yet taken over. The Book is well worth the money if you have your roots in Rodeo.
Quality Lacking.......2004-12-02
Essentially a picture book w/ limited text. Printing and design are dated and of average quality at best. A few great pics but lots of filler. Some day they will come out with a book that does justice to this fantastic sport...
Ring of Fire.......2003-04-02
This is a great book. It shows that bullriding is one of the most thrilling and exciting sports that there is. Even though bullriding has long been overlooked by the sports world, thePBR organization has made this sport one of the most popular and this book shows you why. The pictures are a fan's dream come true and the book is beautifully put together. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes excitement.
Great Book.......2001-06-07
This is one of my all time favorite books! It has so many pictures of bulls like Dillinger, Red Wolf, and Promise Land.
Beautiful.......2001-01-05
If you like Pro Bull Riding, this book is a must, a very beautiful, moving edition. If you aren't a fan, you should check it out anyway. The photography is truly fantastic and makes the sport look even more dramatic, intense, and personal than it already is.

Book Description
Guts and Glory: The Making of the American Military Image in Film is the definitive study of the symbiotic relationship between the film industry and the United States armed services. Since the first edition was published nearly two decades ago, the nation has experienced several wars, both on the battlefield and in movie theatres and living rooms at home. Now author Lawrence Suid has extensively revised and expanded his classic history of the mutual exploitation of the film industry and the military, exploring how Hollywood has reflected and effected changes in America's image of its armed services.
Suid offers in-depth looks at such classic films as Wings, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, The Longest Day, Patton, Top Gun, and An Officer and a Gentleman, as well as controversial war movies like The Green Berets, M*A*S*H, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Born on the Fourth of July.
This significantly expanded edition has been brought completely up to date and includes many of the most recent war films, such as Saving Private Ryan, U-571, Pearl Harbor, and Windtalkers.
Customer Reviews:
humungous & worth every word.......2002-07-10
This is a mighty tome that has something intelligent to say about virtually every war movie made in Hollywood, and even some that weren't from the Hollywood studios.
More amazing yet, where I have a good remembrance of, and a firm opinion about, a given movie, I find that Suid has hit the nail on the head with his comments. Especially notable was the treatment he gives to two fairly recent films, Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor. Almost everyone I know, and the critics as well, hailed SPR as a work of genius. I thought it was dreck, that it got just about everything wrong that it could have gotten wrong, and finally I walked out of the film when the beleaguered Yank says he's run out of ammo and does anyone have any "bandoliers"? Over the course of half a dozen pages, Suid explains to my satisfaction exactly what I found SPR unsatisfying.
He even gives a preview of such very recent films as Blackhawk Down, and there too he's right on the money.
Full disclosure: I know Suid, because he interviewed me about a book that became a film that is mentioned (mostly favorably) in his text.

Book Description
As the recent film Glory Road reminded, the early desegregation of college sports often was neither easy nor pleasant. Here, Bill Elder recalls how he and a courageous group of white and black student-athletes broke racial barriers at a small college in northeast Alabama in the early 1970s. The setting was Sand Mountain, an area that four decades earlier had given rise to the Scottsboro Boys case, an area where racial attitudes for some had not changed much. Elder, recently retired from a successful career as a college sports administrator, shows vividly why he sometimes wondered whether he and his players would live through their experience. Abandoned by their school officials, the players faced constant threats and harassment and occasional violence. But they kept playing and winning games and forging bonds among themselves that lasted long after that first season was over. Through it all, Elder, an Alabama native and lifelong Baptist, watched his community with both a loving and an objective eye. His brief eyewitness account of both the worst and best elements of Southerners during this tumultuous era is compelling testimony.
