Book Description
Right now, Truth is under attack, and much is at stake. Christians are caught in the crossfire of alternative Christian histories, emerging faulty texts, and a cultural push to eliminate absolute Truth altogether. As a result, many churches and Christians have been deceived. Worse still, they propagate the deception that poses itself as Truth! In
The Truth War John MacArthur reclaims the unwavering certainty of God's Truth and anchors Christians in the eternal, immovable promises that are found in His Word.

A Poorly Researched Hack-Job.......2007-08-29
MacAruthur's strengths have typically been in exposition, though one must always be careful to separate his systematic theological interpretations. As with previous works on criticizing entire segments of Christianity, this book is heavy on polemic and shallow on any actual research into the subject.
Beyond evaluating the writings of Brian MacLaren (who is not at the center of emerging churches), and doing cursory (at best) research on the subject, MacArthur ends up slandering a huge number of Christians and makes himself look more foolish than his targets. However, if you buy 3 or 4 copies of this book, it will make a good, though expensive, doorstop.
For a better picture, I would suggest Mark Driscoll's writing on the Emerging/Emergent church (if you're a Calvinist) or Dan Kimball's writing (if you're not a 5-pointer).
Must read for all Christians.......2007-08-21
This book is full of truth. John tells it in love just like it is. Many of the current trends in Christianity are not Biblical. I thank God for men like Pastor MacArthur and his bold stand on the Bible. This book will educate anyone interested on many of the false teachings in the emergent church. Get this book. The Bible clearly warns how much deception will occur in the latter days. This book will give you information to avoid the emerging pitfalls.
An important book.......2007-08-10
Some reviewers say this book is divisive. I would agree that it is; but at what cost and for what reason? Why does John MacArthur draw lines in the sand regarding some people and some beliefs?
Because the truth needs to remain pristine and uncompromised. When MacArthur calls out a person or a position, he doesn't do it needlessly. Tolerance is poisonous when truth is compromised and that, I think, is the reason for this book. Their is a need for the truth to remain unblemished. God gave us the bible to show us truth. When someone or something contradicts the bible they/it should be exposed.
Read this book to better understand the threats to biblical truth and how to combat them. This book is a necessary read in my opinion for all christians because falsehhod creeps up and in the truth so easily at times. In a nutshell, read this book if your passionate about truth and how to defend it.
A solid book definitely worth reading.......2007-08-10
A great book which comes in a time when many churches are interested in entertaining the world, growth at all cost and water down the gospel not to offend the lost. This is very informative book exposing many errors that the early church dealt with which is also alive today such as sabellianism which denies the trinity which bred the church oneness Pentecost ,using scriptures to back up his claims about the dangers of modernism, pragatism amongst other errors the church is facing today
Postmodernism - only shades of Grey.......2007-07-15
Dr. John MacArthur takes a bold and straight forward approach to addressing the current trends that have been invading the Church. He gives clear, well defined definitions of the Emerging church movement and other trends moving through the evangelical church and beyond, and outlines in each chapter his scriptural reasons for his deep concern. MacArthur warns that: 'Trends signal a significant departure from biblical & historic Christianity' and shows examples of points in early Church history where the fight for Truth is what kept the purity of our faith intact. A key concern for the Church is Apostasy to which 2 Thess 2:10 warns will happen to those who do not receive the love of the truth.
On a closer examination of these movements, from what the leaders themselves say, it becomes rapidly apparent that historical Christian Truth is being undermined. We are being told that 'Truth found in Scripture' can't be certain or knowable. As the author writes: 'Truth is under assault in the Church today', and 'People are experimenting with subjective, relativistic ideas of Truth and labeling them 'Christian'. But contrary to popular thought, stands the truth of scripture that endures. (2 Tim 3:16,17, Psalms 119:160, Proverbs 30:5, 1Peter 1:25.)
The author addresses the Christian's apathy towards discernment, the Church allowing false teachings to flourish, and a lack of duty to contend earnestly for the Faith - Jude 3. He encourages church leaders that they are especially responsible for setting the example - Jerm 3:15, Acts 20:28-31.
This book will cause you to really think about your faith, what you believe and why. You will learn important lessons on discernment and how to determine truth by applying the Scriptures, and you will grow in the knowledge of Christ. For those who already hold to sound doctrine, you will be refreshed. recommended reading.

The Perfect Christ Centered Marriage Guide.......2007-06-03
No matter how long you have been married, you must always remember that God comes first. This book reminds us that a healthy, Godly marriage works in this order: 1)God, 2) Marriage 3) Self 4) Children 5) All Else. Without Him, a marriage is doomed. This book has allowed me and my Wife to address minor and major issues using God's direction. This is actually a second publishing, with the first being mostly secular. The authors have taken scripture and make it very clear that God wants marriage to be Spirirtually based. No matter what issue you may be having in your marriage, using God's directives can heal all wounds - past and present. As a Chaplain and a Counselor, I have found this to be the ultimate guide to healing a realtionship. I now recommend this book to all my clients, regardless of their religious beliefs. It provides scripture as an adjunct to the core message of each topic, and is very easy to follow. The authors have written it so that one may read a section regarding their specific problem, or it can be read in the order it was written. If you are yearning to have a Godly marriage - THIS IS THE MANUAL YOU NEED. Peace and God Be With You.
Great relationship/marriage tool, especially for those engaged........2007-02-27
Having had moved over 2k miles to be with my fiance (CA to OH), I was eagerly looking into jumping into a premarital counseling program. With all the adjustments (move, weather, searching for new home church, limited contact w/ accountability team, vulnerability, and coming from total independence to dependence), issues, both past and present, came up and were inevitable for both of us. Having seeked out counseling at a nearby church, a counselor and wonderful wise man of God, Dr. Fink, recommended we read this book together. With our conflicting schedules, we were not able to participate in the onsite program at the church that covers this book. But, our counselor gave us some good advice when reading through this book together.
The method that's worked for us is reading one (1) chapter per week in our "own" convenient time and answer the questions/exercises on an index card or two in our own time (between Monday thru Thursday), exchange answer cards that Friday morning/afternoon (and wish each other a good day at work, etc), and then go over the answer cards "together" on Sunday evening (he reads to me what I wrote, I read to him what he wrote) and we discuss it (what lead to that, give each other examples, ask if we want to add to it, etc). This way, we have 2 days to process & ponder each others answers, and not immediately react and try to convince each other that one or the other's answer(s) is(are) better and/or right.
So far, we're on our third week, and although it's still early on, I'm finding lots of growth and acceptance in this. The concepts and techniques are simple and applicable. I'm hopeful once again, and am excited about doing the rest of the chapters. Lots of positive changes in both of us toward oneness, although we are not perfect and still have fallen and may fall short, though I can see we're putting into practice what we've learned so far and that's what helps us not give up, but stay hopeful.
Although we are doing this in our time w/out a counselor daily/weekly, our counselor has left the door open to us (together or alone) to come meet with him to discuss any problems or issues we can't seem to work on.
God willing, our plan is to do the PREP after these 14 weeks, and move forward with the wedding plans.
If you're reading this, I recommend you get the book. I don't think this book will get much dust on the shelves as it will be referenced often. I will also recommend this to family and friends (engaged, married, and those in long-term relationships).
Blessings,
mb
Very pleased.......2007-01-09
This book has helped us mend our marriage and grow to better communicate and understand each other. I highly recommend it for engaged, newlyweds, or people who have been married for years. God has truly blessed our marriage through this book.
marriage maker.......2006-03-04
My husband and I both liked the book because it gives practical ways to communicate, which can cross over in all aspects of life. It gives helpful, concrete tools to use in relationships.
Wonderful book and program!.......2005-10-29
This book, along with the non-Christian version, Fighting for your Marriage, is great! This is great marriage enrichment stuff and helps so much with communication, as well as increasing fun in your marriage. Great for small groups. [...]. As a mental health counselor, I use the tools in this book with my clients and highly recommend it! Also at the PREP website is a list of PREP instructors if you need more individualized help.

I'm staying with my boys...the Heroic Life of Sgt John Basilone USMC
ASIN: 0975546104 |
Product Description
I'M STAYING WITH MY BOYS... is a first-hand look inside the life of one of the greatest heroes of the greatest generation. Sgt. John Basilone was lauded by General Douglas MacArthur as ...A ONE MAN ARMY and awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic defense of a vital airfield early in World War 2. It was the turning point of the war and Basilones foxhole was the site of the turning point in that battle. Distinctive among military biographies, the story is narrated by Sgt. Basilone himself allowing readers to experience the development of Johnny Basilone, the aimless youth, into Gunnery Sergeant MANILA JOHN Basilone, the clear-eyed warrior, undefeated light-heavyweight boxer and nationally revered war hero. This publication is the only family-authorized biography. The story is woven with surprising personal details such as Sgt. Basilones uncanny premonitions. Three times he confided to his family unlikely visions of his future. All three times the visions came to pass - including the final one that foretold his death. In spite of his final revelation, and true to his unwavering dedication to his men, he returned to battle and was killed on the beach at Iwo Jima - an emotional true story

A MUST READ ! ! !.......2005-09-15
My friend loaned me this book to read and I must say that it gave me a new found appreciation of what those men and women did for us in WWII. This book was very easy to read, and should be included in the curriculum of every Recent American History course taught in High School or College. I HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy of this book. I have already purchased a copy for myself after reading my friends copy.
It sounds so prophetic.......2005-01-26
He knew he was going to die, and he just kept on fighting. He never abandoned his marines and thats just what he should have done. Its how the writer makes this so real that is so inspiring, not that his deeds werent great, but there have probably been thousands who have done just what he did, they just werent famous. But overall this is a good book. I like how it takes us to a time when being "patriotic" didnt get us arrested or sued.
A must read.......2005-01-06
Wonderfully moving and well written insight into a true American hero. It is a must read for all patriotic Americans and almost a responsiblity for us all to be aware of one of the US Marine's best.
Excellent.......2004-10-25
If you are interested in a personal story of WWII, then this is an excellent book. Rather than getting into the details of the conflicts this book focuses on the personal story of John Basilone - one of the handful of true American Heroes from WWII.
Written in the first person with an ample dose of personal details from his family, this book truly brings Manilla John back to life for many. I've been studying WWII for only 10 years and have read my share of the technical assessments of the important battles in WWII. This book stands out in my mind because it puts the reader in touch with the qualities of America's best young men and women of the 1940's; selflessness, courage, a supreme sense of duty, and in Basilon's case, a supreme sense of destiny.
Highly recommended for anyone with a passing interest in WWII, or for anyone who wants to learn about what made America's young people "tick" 60 years ago.
An Extraordinary Biography and Full Frontal View of War.......2004-08-28
Author and Film Producer Jim Prosser has created a richly detailed, raptly written, devastatingly powerful book about the life of American War hero John Basilone. This book is especially pungent at this time in history because it revives a lost tradition of the country's view of maritime heroism. Since the atrocities of the Vietnam mistake to the present harrowing details of a similar (or worse) war in Iraq the concept of war is now very much in a negative light. Even the words 'war hero' seem an oxymoron, so strident are the feelings about America's latest aggressions. But to appreciate this fine book requires a return to the mindset of the US during World War II when not only was Europe under the vile threat of Hitler and Mussolini, but the Japanese warriors were annihilating China, Korea, and ultimately the Philippines in the mission to own the Pacific Ocean. And even in those early years the threat seemed frightening but distant until the Japanese successfully decimate the US Pacific Fleet on December 7, 1941. That incident unified the country, creating a fighting force and support system at home that eventually resulted in the defeat of the massive evil outside the borders of the USA.
Given that atmosphere of over a half century ago, author Proser has created one of the most convincing portraits of a military hero in literature. And the intensively researched and detailed approach results in a biography that fully restores the ambience of WW II. John Basilone was a nice Italian boy form Raritan, New Jersey, a lad who quit school to follow his recurring visions. He caddied for Japanese businessmen at a country club, seeing in his prophetic mind that at some day he would be at war with Japan. After trying multiple jobs he finally enlists in the Army, makes the best of boot camp by gambling and boxing, and is shipped to the Philippines where he spent time waiting, boxing (becoming a champion nicknamed Manila John), running a little bar with his Island sweetheart, and finally returning home. Frustrated once again with the boredom of work and the embarrassment of not having finished his education, Basilone finally returns to the military by signing on with the USMC, trains hard at Quantico, Cuba, and other US training camp swamps, and finally is shipped to Guadalcanal where his brilliance and dedication to his commanding officer ("Chesty" Puller) through one of the most devastating battles in the Pacific arena earned him not only the respect of his men, but also the Medal of Honor - the highest commendation offered by his country. Returning home form this mission he ride the waves of adulation form the American people, hobnobs with movies stars, sells War Bonds, and falls in love, only to be shipped out once again to the Pacific where he is killed in action in the battle for Iwo Jima.
The amazing (that is, ONE of the amazing) aspect of this book is that Proser has elected to write it in the first person of John Basilone. Everything is told as Basilone perceives it, lives, feels, and survives it. Rarely has a story been written with such clarity and perception: we truly feel that Basilone has written his memoirs. The language of the period is exactly right, the descriptions of the various battles and conditions of being a soldier under tremendously adverse conditions are vivid, and the soldiers' mentality of being in the thick of war are written with such bulls-eye focus that no matter what the reader's opinion of War might be, this book makes it all understandable form the point of view of the soldiers who fought. Some of the battle passages are tough to read: "On October 23, a light tank and infantry attack across the mouth of the Matanikau ran right into the teeth of Vandegrift's defenses. It was chewed up in short order with over 600 Japs killed, many of them trapped in a jungle clearing where US tanks just drove over them instead of wasting ammunition. They ground the poor bastards up like sausage under the tank treads until the entire clearing was covered in gore and left to rot in the sun." And a soldier's impressions: "We all heard a lot about the bravery of the Japanese soldier before we got on the island. They were supposed to be the most fearless warriors ever to fight. But I kept thinking what kind of bravery it was that sent them, one after the other, right into the same guns that mowed down dozens before them. I don't know if that was bravery. I don't know what it was. Either they were crazy or they just didn't care. So I didn't care either. They weren't even men anymore. They were dumb animals who wanted me dead and had killed all my friends."
Proser very cleverly weaves snippets of Iwo Jima from the opening of the book to its finish, which in an act of brilliance makes the whole story more pungent in retrospect. There is little doubt the Sgt. John Basilone was an extraordinary soldier and military hero along with the thousands of others who lost their lives in the incomprehensibly vast WW II. I think this is a very important book that everyone should read, and I say that as a pacifist, as a Vietnam Veteran convinced that war on any level is simply not an option. This book is vastly important, well written, and contains a story and moment of history we all should face and incorporate. And perhaps then we can all better empathize with soldiers form throughout history to the very present. Recommended without reservation!

An excellent guide/resource for teens...as well as for parents & educators if you get the Leader's Guide too!.......2006-05-27
I find this book, despite its small size & simple layout, to be an excellent guide/resource for teens.
The analogy is interesting. When life is very stressful, it can feel as if you're in a jungle with lots of dangerous tigers --ferocious, hungry, invisible tigers, quietly stalking you.
It covers everything from being assertive to building relationships, taking risks, making decisions, staying healthy, dealing with fears, using positive self-talk, & even growing a funny bone. There is also a "Self-Care for Tiger Bites" section which offers ready "first aid" for teens who need quick relief.
Parents &/or educators who are also interested in this book, are advised to get hold of the Leader's Guide. It is designed to support & enhance the messages of the Student Book with a step-by-step curriculum in a dozen of easy-to-use sessions. It comes with two dozens of reproducible handout masters.
Kudos to the authors for these two excellent guides/resources!
I would strongly recommend readers to check out the publisher's website. They have an extensive repertoire of excellent guides/resources for kids, teens, parents as well as educators.
Cracking the Whip on Stress.......2001-11-20

Adults working with teens will find this book a valuable resource for helping adolescents understand what happens when they are stressed to the limits of their coping ability. The section "Self-Care for Tiger Bites" offers immediate first aid for those times when fast relief is needed to relieve overwhelming levels of stress. Using this book, teenagers and adults alike can crack the whip and tame the stress within.
entertaining, great illustrations, excellent tip for teens.......1998-10-04
Anxious and troubled and confused teens (most of the teen populations) will carry this portable guide to survival for several days and come away reassured that they are not alone, and come away with useful skills to make life better and easier. Even the teen readers like it!!

Customer Reviews:
Well written! Exciting photographs!.......2007-09-19
Linda Hayward's beginning reader gives children a detailed and fascinating look into the day of a fireman and the job that he does dring a 24 hour shift. There are safety inspections, rescue work, checking all the equipment in the firehouse, etc.
The picture word list in the back of the book is an excellent feature, refreshing the reader's knowledge.
Engaging Story - Great Images.......2007-02-20
I haven't met a kid yet who didn't have at least a passing interest in firetrucks and firefighters. This book gives curious children a peak into the "real" life of an every day hero. The vocabulary is just right for beginning readers and the images will keep the attention of younger listeners.
This book also serves as a useful tool to speak to your children about fire safety.
Good for younger kids, too.......2007-02-18
Although these books are intended for young readers, my two-year-old daughter enjoys having them read to her. The language is easy and direct, the connection between words and pictures is very clear, and the short length fits her attention span.
We have about six books from this series, but "A Day in the Life of a Fire Fighter" is her favorite - and she now loves to point out the "Exit" sign and fire extinguisher in any building we visit.
DK books are wonderful.......2003-07-14
My daughter is 4 1/2 and is beginning to read. The DK books are wonderful and she loves them. The pictures are very good (all DK books are excellently illustrated) and the short stories hold her interest. This series is great in that the reading levels are clearly marked on the book cover, so she knows what to look for when at the library or bookstore.
I also appreciate DK because of their quality binding. Unlike so many other children books, DK uses heavy glossy paper-stock.

Book Description
David Gibbs took a leap of faith in 2003 when Bob and Mary Schindler, Terri Schiavo's parents, asked him to represent them in their desperate battle to save their daughter's life. Taking the case, Gibbs embarked on a compelling journey that would forever change his life. He watched Terri fade away in her final days and was with Mary Schindler the last time she saw Terri alive. He witnessed what the media did not see or report: that Terri was not a vegetable; that she laughed, cried, and responded to verbal commands; and that yes, her life was very much worth saving. David Gibbs says, ''After Terri died, Bob and Mary asked me to tell what really happened, so that many others would be spared from a similar fate. I make no apology that, from my perspective, what happened to Terri was wrong. Very wrong. Maybe you agree. Then again, maybe you disagree, or the jury is still out in your mind. I believe if you will join me as I present my case, you will come to understand: Why I fought for Terri. Why I'd do it again. And why I'd fight for you, too.'' Now, read the story for yourself and learn how you can protect yourself and your family against a similar tragedy. David Gibbs, attorney for Mary and Bob Schindler, Terri's parents, gives his insider's account of the story that tore the heart out of a nation.
Customer Reviews:
A great and important read.......2007-07-06
Every single one of us has a terminal body. Some of just have healthier terminal bodies. And some of us--like my newborn son--need substantial assistance to do something as simple as eating.
I don't expect my home state to order the withholding of nutrition to my son. But that is what the state of Florida--or, rather, one unchecked judge in Florida--ordered for someone else who could not feed herself: Terri Schiavo.
David Gibbs represented Terri Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, in the later stages of that tragic event in our nation's history. His account of that event, Fighting for Dear Life, brings to heart and mind again the maddening outcome, which has already seemingly faded so quickly from our nation's conscience. As Gibbs tells it, it is his story of:
"Why I fought for Terri.
Why I'd do it again.
And why I'd fight for you too."
Gibbs can't tell us why Terri Schiavo had to die. No human can. But Gibbs does tell us that Ms. Schiavo had minimal cognition; that her parents loved her and wanted nothing more than to care for her; that her husband had broken his marriage vows; that he refused to allow her to see the outside world or to allow the outside world see her; that he did not spend a dime of the medical malpractice judgment on her rehabilitation, despite telling the jury he would do so; that the only evidence of her supposed wish to die was her husband's and his family's hearsay statements, that the judicial system failed her, and that she died a painful, unnecessary death.
Few real life stories have such distinct Good Guys (Gibbs, the Schindlers, Ms. Schiavo herself, Governor Jeb Bush, President Bush, the Florida legislature, and the U.S. Congress) and Bad Guys (Michael Schiavo, George Felos, Judges George Greer and James Whittemore) as this one. If you care about life issues, and on the pro-life side, you will clinch your fists all over again.
Especially appreciated is the final five chapters, which are essentially a written sermon explaining the global importance of what we allowed to happen to Terri Schiavo. One can hope that Ms. Schiavo's story as told in Fighting for Dear Life will revive all of us again to a culture of life.
Demands a choice - doesn't allow for fence-riding.......2007-06-25
I have read comments and reviews elsewhere that say "Fighting for Dear Life" unfairly demonizes Michael Schiavo. I have to wonder if these people actually read this book, as the book shows no more demonization of him than what he clearly brought upon himself.
The justification for Michael's "right to die" case was that Terri wasn't really "there" anymore. Recall, however, that it was Michael who barred press coverage from Terri's room. It was Michael who kept visitors to an absolute minimum, right up to the end. It was Michael who exercised the strictest control over what the American public would see - and not see - of Terri. Why? If Terri was so self-evidently "not there anymore," why would he demand such restrictive coverage of her? Privacy? Dignity? I don't think so...if she was no longer "there," there was neither dignity nor sense of privacy left to violate.
If the accounts in this book are true, the reason for Michael's actions are obvious: Terri actually WAS "there" right up to the end, and Michael fully knew it. If the lawyer's accounts of Terri's capacities are true, letting the press in for unrestricted coverage would have blown Michael's entire case out of the water, and for all I know may have opened him up to all kinds of trouble. Best case scenario, he would have come out as the villain many people have long suspected he is.
So if you've read this book you have a choice to make: disregard this book as a pack of lies written by an ambulance chaser carrying on a vendetta for a bitter, grieving, vengeful family...or decide that Terri Schiavo really was "there" but was forced to die anyway.
Had the accounts contained in this book been made public two years ago, I believe this case would have ended differently.
Wow...excellent book!.......2007-02-20
This book was fantasically written and a true eye opener of the real facts! I was very saddened of the outcome, but it really makes you wonder...are all of your affairs are in order???
What Was Terri Schiavo Doing in a Hospice?.......2007-01-07
The heinous death of the most famous resident of Florida 's Woodside Hospice certainly leaves me baffled - to say the least. My understanding is that the hospice movement has grown incredibly over the past two decades - largely due to Medicare reimbursement. Eligibility for Medicare hospice services requires certification by two physicians that a patient's terminal illness limits life expectancy to six months - at tops. How on earth was Terri Schiavo ever accepted into a hospice?
From attorney David Gibbs, I have learned that Terri Schiavo was far, far more responsive and interactive than America was led to believe. Yet, her cognitive level should not have determined whether she received food and water! Mr. Gibbs refers to a 2004 statement by Pope John Paul II, which seemed directly related to the immorality of how Terri was treated: "the administration of water and food, even when provided by artificial means, always represents a natural means of preserving life, not a medical act."
Now I need to hear Michael's side of the story........2006-12-22
First of the entire book is extremely well written and riveting. I enjoyed every page. Congratulations to the author! I appreciate Mr. Gibb's point of view, however, it is just that. Although he doesn't flat out call Michael a monster he implies it multiple times. A personal situation forced me to contemplate my wife in a vegetative state many times as she battled a debilitating brain tumor. The thought of the light of your life living any other way but as she once was as a vibrant woman is unbearable. It is clear that Terri wasn't in a permanent vegetative state, however, she would never, not in a million years of therapy, be as she once was. That thought haunted Michael every day since the accident and every night now that she has passed. The Shindlers did not respect his decisions surrounding her care and future despite his legal right to manage those things. They violated a trust bestowed to him on their wedding day. I know exactly what he feels as I experienced a very similar thing in my life. I know it sounds harsh that he forbade her parents from being with Terri when she died, but it was his last opportunity to say to the Swindler, "What you did by prolonging this atrocity and dragging me through a mile of broken glass is unforgivable." Some things are just that. Unforgivable.

Book Description
The typical American worker puts in nine weeks more on the job than his or her European counterpart. The costs of this overwork are enormous, both personally and societally. This bracing collection of essays is both a wide-ranging analysis of the phenomenon and a blueprint for change. With contributions by such notable names as Vicki Robin, author of Your Money or Your Life, and David Korten, author of When Corporations Rule the World, this book shows what ordinary citizens can do to restore balance to themselves and their communities. Take Back Your Time is the official handbook for Take Back Your Time Day, a national event rallying support for reclaiming a proper work-life balance.

A great compilation of essays on a crucial topic.......2007-06-14
With this book, John de Graaf provides an opportunity to sit down with talented writers and perceptive thinkers, and hear their views on one of society's most pressing problems - time poverty. As we race to produce more stuff - stuff that is poisoning our environment - we lose the time we need to take care of ourselves and our families, particularly those most in need of care, the very young, the very old, and even our pets. As this book shows, Americans' single-minded focus on production comes at the expense of other areas of life that desperately need our time and attention. Children growing up in institutionalized care, pets being dumped at shelters, citizens relinquishing their right to vote, obesity becoming epidemic as fast food replaces home cooking, landfills overflowing with the items we frenetically produce; the list goes on. In addition to viewing the problem from several interesting and diverse perspectives, the book includes essays on possible solutions and provides ways for readers to get involved. Everyone should find the time to read this important and engaging book.
Every Person In America Should Read This Book.......2007-05-29
This is something that needs to be forwarded around. We need to spread the word.
MSNBC had the nerve to do a news story saying people in the US have the lowest productivity in the first world, but as this book points out, people in the US work an average of 9 more weeks than other first world countries. People who put in 10 and 12 hour work days as we do and don't take vacations are exhausted, and have terrible health and productivity as a result of it.
European countries such as the United Kingdom where they eat more sugar and fat than we do, are thinner and in better health because they are not working themselves to death as we are.
One of my favorite quotes from this book, is "Spending time with your family is a family value."

Time: The ULTIMATE commodity.......2004-11-18
For years I've thought of Europe as like the grandfather... sitting on the porch, watching America in action. He sits there, somewhat envious, reminiscing about the days when he used to be the top dog himself. But the envy is shortlived; in truth, he would never trade places with us, for he knows that the true cost of being able to call yourself #1 is far too high.
Money and power, after all, aren't everything.
In Take Back Your Time, de Graaf looks at a culture that is all about the material short term and cannot see beyond. It's a book that reminds us that it's OUR time, that this is a commodity that we CHOOSE to trade for things like money, status and comfort. I use the word 'remind' loosely--in truth, it's almost a new concept, for many. We hear stories of millionaires on their deathbed who would give everything to have one more year, yet other millionaires will do 15 hours tomorrow rather than think about it. Our culture is basically designed to HAVE TO work like this: the economy would go bust if we put anything before money. You could argue it's always been that way, but not to this extreme: every year we trade more hours so as to buy bigger houses, better cars, more gadgets, etc. This is a book that all of America needs to read. If only we had the time.
Live deeper, not faster.......2004-11-13
It's the 900 pound gorilla in America that everyone should be talking about: time poverty. Most folks accept it as unavoidable; that's just the way life is. Work, work, work. Busy, busy, busy. Bulloney, says this book. I'm not doing too bad but I see the trappings of modern existence creeping into my life and I'm inspired to keep them in check. This book is particularly strong because it draws on the opinions of many progressive thinkers, rather that just one lone voice in the wilderness. Stop buying stuff, invest time in your family and community and civic society. Live deeper. I'm working on it. Are you?
excellent book.......2004-01-18

Book Description
A seaman as heroic as Nelson, a master of gunnery and genius at deception, a tactician so formidably skillful Napoleon called him "the sea wolf," Thomas Cochrane was an adventurer, admiral, and inventor of new devices of warfare far beyond his time. He made of his life at sea a legend more extraordinary than any of the works of fiction it inspired - like the famous sea tales of C.S. Forrester and Patrick O'Brian's bestselling series of naval novels featuring the redoubtable Jack Aubrey. Barely twenty-five when he assumed command of the Speedy, Cochrane created mayhem in the Mediterranean as he took the tiny brig with its fourteen guns to naval glory and himself to national fame and a fortune in prize money. A maverick, Cochrane often stood at odds with the Admiralty and on occasion operated against its orders. As innovative as he was fearless, he flew under false colors to deceive the enemy, instituted in-shore guerrilla raiding, promoted the use of explosion ships, and experimented with poison gas, propeller-drive ships, and compressed-air engines. Outnumbered and outgunned, he nonetheless triumphed over Spanish and Portuguese naval forces in battles off the coasts of Chile, Peru, and Brazil, where he served as a mercenary in the cause of independence. Born into a penurious but noble Scottish family, Cochrane rose fabulously and fearlessly from midshipman to admiral, from penniless heir to a radical member of parliament to Tenth Earl of Dundonald. He married a penniless orphan and had a long-standing liaison with one of the most famous literary figures of his day. He survived the Stock Exchange scandal that sent him to prison and escaped to South America, where he helped shape the destiny of a continent. Rebellious, dashing, mad, heroic; Cochrane embodies the spirit of the Romantic Age.
Customer Reviews:
Cochrane v. Aubrey, worth the read?.......2007-09-16
I have read half of the Aubrey series and though it might be worthwhile to read about the real man...yes, that of Lord Thomas Cochrane, before finishing the rest of the series. Was it worth it, yes!!! Could it have been better written...probably, as a lot of questions went unanswered.
So what did I do...I ordered one of the books Robert Harvey recommended..."Cochrane" by Donald Thomas and continued reading the series by Patrick O'Bryan. I was not disappointed in Harvey's book, in fact, I found a lot of information which I felt was left out of the series. What might that be...try reading about the real life hero of Scotland and how the Admiralty tried/attempted to shut him down. This guy was for real. Damn if we don't have the same thing happening today.
Any history is worthwhile...it is what we do with it that makes it important. And give me a break...you can afford the $14 to be better informed....
Page turner.......2007-06-19
As noted, fact is stranger than fiction, and it couldn't be truer than with the life of Thomas Cochrane. If you enjoy the likes of Horatio Hornblower or Jack Aubrey, you won't be able to put this one down. You'll immediately recognize their "fictional" exploits as you read the real stories upon which they're based. A great summer read!
Walk the Plank. The sharks aren't in the water, they're onboard!.......2006-05-14
If you love adventure, history, and a dashing and a daring true-life hero; then this is your cup of tea. However, if your closer to my taste then it would be a martini, dry, shaken not stirred. Anyone with military background will sadly identify with the upper echelon's stupidity/hypocrisy. Dare I say our hero undergoes a transformation, who at the climax of the book is on his way to rescue Napolean himself! Truth is stranger than fiction. And I might add: edge of your seat true suspence. Because in the end you can't escape the truth. The FIGHTING CAPTAIN welcomes you aboard mate!
Glad I only paid $5 for it............2006-03-27
Basically a recital of accomplishments and events, with next to no detail about most of them. The only thing he really goes into depth about was his trial before the King's Bench. Also, it appears to be writtin almost on a 6th grade level. Not impressed at all.
An interesting, but biased history.......2003-10-28
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about cutter and brig anti-privateering and sea-land battle tactics. Cochrane was a true master at both of these things, and this book did provide some useful insights.
The author seems on a mission to put Cochrane on a pedestal. He spends too much time sniping at Cochrane's enemies, and whitewashing his misconduct. This makes an otherwise interesting story difficult to read at times.
A much more indepth treatment of how Cochrane achieved his many victories without the political commentary would have been more interesting to me.

Book Description
Firefighting is a world of absolutes: evil is a red devil that wants destruction and death, good is a charged hose line, full of water to fight the flames. The best and boldest firefighters in the country, the men of Rescue 2 are hand-picked to fight not just the biggest blazes but any other emergency New York can throw at them. The sheer adrenaline of the job is perfectly captured in the dramatic story of their firehouse, a model for others nationwide-dubbed 'the cuisinart' because it slices up new recruits. The story begins in the late 1990s as Phil Ruvolo takes command from Captain Ray Downey, a legendary FDNY leader. Ruvolo inherits a stubborn group of vets, still loyal to Downey. He also steps into a firehouse mourning the recent loss of a brother-Rescue 2's first fatality since the 1950s. Ruvolo not only faces the challenge of transforming the house into his Rescue 2, he must also keep the men united and, later, bolster their spirits through 9/11 and beyond. Tom Downey takes us into the fireman's world: the smell of their coats after a good fire, the hardened eyes of a veteran after a fellow fireman's death, the humor and camaraderie. His firemen are not cardboard heroes; they're a group of gritty, larger-than-life personalities brought together by dedication and a mission to save lives. Rescue 2 doesn't leave a fire until everybody's safe. They're the last men out. Theirs is an inspiring story destined to become a classic.

the most moving book I have ever read.It takes the good with the bad. No sugar coating, all honesty.
A good way to scratch the surface..........2007-03-29
I should know: I'm a firemen's daughter. In fact, I'm a Rescue 2 firemen's daughter (we're a special breed) and have spent my entire life in the wacky world of Rescue firemen. Although it's really hard to capture the type of insanity and devotion these guys have for their jobs - Tom does a really good job. If someone you love is a fireman: read this book. It'll help you understand them better. Hey, even if you don't know anyone whose a firemen you should read this book. I just have 1 bone to pick with you Mr. Downey: Captain Ruvolo's daughters are not what I would call "pampered" (p.62). He loves them and they love him just as much.
great book .......2006-03-25
Amazing stories in this book. You get the feel of the life of a member of the famed FDNY RESCUE 2. It is the kind of book that you read one chapter, and say..."Just one more chapter and I will put it down." But you cant put it down. After I finished the book, I said "I wish there could be more stories." Highly recomend this book to anyone interested in the life of those crazy enough to run in where the rest of the world runs out!
A Good Read.......2005-08-20
A very good documenary about Res2cue. It really captures the lifesyle of firefighters and how they enteract with one another in good and bad times.
It further discribes the hours of vigorous training and education needed to perform rescue work in NY city, from a child impaled on a wrought iron fence to rescuing one of their own from a collapsed building, to the 9-11 collapse of the Twin Towers.
An excellant book for fire service leaders and those who wish to be.
So glad to be an American!.......2005-07-29
What a fantastic book! It gives you just a glimpse of some of the former and present day men of Rescue 2. It's a look into the daily life of a firefighter while also getting to know the personalities of these brave men. I didn't want to put the book down. I laughed and cried throughout the book. I'll always have a high respect for firefighters. This book just reinforced my conviction. Well done Tom Downey!

Customer Reviews:
Great book for kids conflict resolution.......2007-01-12
We have been using this with the Leaders Guide in our afterschool program for Middle Schoolers grades 5 - 8 and it is wonderful. The topics are framed in a way that kids can relate to. I recommend it!
Nice and useful book.......2006-05-01
As the parent of a middle schooler on the autistic spectrum, this book is a vital resource in helping kids to learn the social skills needed in todays often stressful school enviornment.
How To Resolve Conflict: It's Not Just For Kids.......2004-12-06
Ms. Drew's book is NOT just for kids. In the book, she explains how people can resolve conflict by using some simple and elegant techniques. In addition, the book is written for people ages 11 to 114. The book borrows mostly from the practice of Mediation. Mediation is a form of conflict resolution which uses a Neutral Mediator who helps parties come to a mutually acceptable agreement to end their dispute.
The literature of Mediation is filled with academic treatises using legal and Sociological words which make them often difficult for a regular person to read and integrate. Ms. Drew specifically did NOT write that type of book. Her book teaches concepts and methods by which people can help solve problems that are meaningful to them and others.
In doing so, Ms. Drew uses some special writing ability and her vast experience as a recognized expert in Peer Mediation and School Conflict Resolution. She writes her book in a vernacular using regular words to describe what she is telling the reader. She uses ethnic names of all nationalities to convey that all people can do this type of work, and all people are worthy of respect. She most effectively uses real life examples and information that she gathered from her work and from her survey of Middle School children all over the country. And she reaffirms the belief that everyone is hurt by conflict and everyone can help to fix that problem in society.
It is rare that readers come across a book that gives this much affirmation and assistance in regular life, and is suited for virtually all people in such a vast age range. The book is recommended for almost everyone who has an interest in helping reduce the amount of conflict in the world today. Not just big conflicts like wars, but also regular conflicts that we face everyday as people.
This book is truly a fine example of how people can take their own power and help not only themselves, but those all around them. All who have the wish to reduce pain and hurtfulness in society should read this book.
A self-help guide for kids and teens.......2004-07-09
The Kids' Guide To Working Out Conflicts: How To Keep Cool, Stay Safe, And Get Along is a self-help guide for kids and teens to learning basic social skills. From keeping one's cool when teased, to staying safe in threatening situations, dealing with sexual harassment, learning how to disagree and get along, self-tests, conflict logs, and much more. Assorted useful forms for tracking and monitoring one's progress add a useful interactive aspect, and humorous caricatures, stories and survey results from kids themselves, and a friendly, no-nonsense tone enhance the highly palatible and simple to assimilate lessons.
